My mother's maiden was Schoenberg and there are a lot of square heads in Texas, we needd to care for one another. Is it yet Duetch to say howdy?

German for 'howdy' is 'Tag' which also translates as 'day'.
'Howdy' is a word which us German's do not use as there is no literal translation.
Interesting backstory about your Mother's maiden name; thank you for sharing.
Did/does your mother have German or Austrian relatives?
 
Funny you guys mention this. A long time ago, like back in the 70's I wondered why people here said howdy. I can't remember anymore where I found the info,but it seemed it was a slang, shortened version of "How's your day?" When people in German say "Tag" I wonder if that's the same thing, a shortened version of however you would say "How's your day?" in German?

We would simply say 'Hallo' or 'Tag'.
'Guten Tag' is the most used phrase for greetings.
 
Yeah, Same in English, usually people say "good day". Howdy is more of a country slang type of greeting used in place of good day. Of course, here in the U.S., "country" describes a lifestyle or attitude more than where someone lives. Lot's of people living in big cities are "county" too! Strange world we live in. :cool2

From my Grandpa and my 2 years in Germany I recall guten tag now that you mention it. And I promise I was in no hurry to return to the land of the rounddoor knobs when I was there. Had Not gone3 off to war from there I certainly would have brought home a bride. Most of my tour of duty was in Hanau and it was a great place to live in the sixties.

My German spelling is awful by it is or was vos ist lose with a long o in lose.
