Just wanted to let everyone know - I just finished reading The Seven Storey Mountian by Thomas Merton and it is an excelent read. By far one of the most enjoyable biographys that I have ever read, and Merton really had an interesting spiritual walk.

Just wanted to throw that out as a recomendation

I read that book in my 'catholic' days. Merton alright on in the begining but then started to get strange with the Buddhism and zen. :silly:

I think he was excellent, all he did was take methods that worked and grouped them together to help him in his christian beliefs. He assimulated what he needed from the world. Sound like a good idea to me :biggrin

Have you read his latter works? He believes and taught that all mystical experance comes from God. That includes zen, hindu, etc. He basicly tells us that all mystical aspects of all faiths are equal.

I have not had the opportunity to read his latter works, however I would tend to agree with him. Not all other religious experience is demonic, and if we believe that God is reaching out to people why could he not be using mysticism as his method?? Just a thought....

Since we Christians have a tendency to filter just about everything through God's word, I would have to say that mysticism may be one of the things He despises. Besides, He already gave us His method of reaching out to people...His name is Jesus. :biggrin

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

I don't know if mysticism can be something that God dispises - the question would be then why has he allowed it to be used in religious circles. Mysticism is an element you will find in all religions not just christianity - I think that has something to say about God.

Mystic's tend to use allogory to understand anything and everything in life. The problem with is, every understanding of the outside world is left up to the believer...I don't know about you, but I'm a sinner and I can't trust my own understanding.

May I suggest A. W. Tozer? A solid Bible believer who was a mystic.
