This one has a non-conventional eye and needs a Digital Camera of their own. Then download a free copy of GIMP and show them where to find all the extra brushes and tools they will ever need to do what ever with the photos. It is free from the Free Software Foundation and does anything Photo Shop will do.

Use a dlsr , it's nearly as good as those old film camera's .

Thanks for the information Bill. You actually gave me a wonderful idea for a Christmas present. She tells us that she want to be a photographer as an occupation. Maybe she does have a different view of the world that needs to be expressed?!

There's places to.teach her .dlsr are not simply point and shoot.I'm still learning mine .

I never went beyond the hobby phase but I also relied to heavily on "normal" as learned in classes. That is not the angle I would shoot but there is a story to be told in that shot. Let her think outside the box and take way too many shots, that is how the best pictures are taken and electronics have slaughtered the film industry because it is so reusable.

Be sure to look into GIMP and only download the program from their web site. Other sites host it ut they add trash that you do not ever want. Get it at www.gimp.org and there will be no adware and no spyware.

On their site you will also find links to add ons and tutorials. If you search Google for "gimp howto+pdf" and "gimp tutorials+pdf" you can download all the instruction manuals she will ever need. Install, as needed, the different add-ons and she will have a thousand dollars worth of software and pay nothing for it. All you need to spend is the price of the camera and two or three 32 gig or larger Memory Cards and she can take hundreds of shots and work for weeks off of her cards. I use two 64 gig cards myself.

Until she develops her personal style a DSLR is a waste of money and she might discover she does not enjoy her chosen field. A good point and shoot is all she needs to explore with. I went through the SLR stage and all my shots are now point and shoot. The DSLR is not needed because a to far shot is curable with the GIMP Software and lenses are very costly.

Your digital cameras these days aren't cheap.I bought my dslr on sale.you can't adjust with gimp fir poor lighting .my other camera couldn't catch what my eyes sees.with my dlsr I was able to catch it more often.I paid 300 bucks new fir that other camera ,and my dslr with two lenses , a memory card, and case was 499.sams has a sale . sure you can as I have use any camera but playing with light and apera ture opening and f stops will change you.

Too much I have forgotten.

Pentax DSLRs are quite reasonable, because they don't spend huge funds for advertising. The K-3 and K-1 actually have better image quality than Nikons or Canons costing hundreds of dollars more. But if you want to really cut costs and still get a quality camera...

Pentax Q

This is the earliest model, with metal body. It's amazing, and built to last. I got one a few weeks ago, and I'm astonished at the quality in such a small camera. Here's a shot I got recently:

And it's small. Very easy to take along. And on auto, it's easy to use, while it has all the controls of a DSLR, when you're ready to use them. I've done 11X14 prints that don't look any less sharp than such prints with my K3.

This is all good information! :thumbsup
LTD.
The camera I use cost me a hundred dollars and my memory cards were thirty-two dollars for the pair. I could have purchased the same equipment with the Nikon name for better than three hundred but all I would have gained is prestige on the street corners.

Oh, I am sorry Jason but poor lighting is almost never an issue with GIMP. The lighting must be so poor that a wide open arpature or an F16 would have made no difference. Sorry, but that is one of the best tools in Gimp and Photo Shop.

It's my understanding that pentax was bought out by ricoh

My nest film units were Exacta VX IIs from East Germany. They were tough to purchase except one went into East Berlin for that purpose. There were every bit as good as Nikon but about one quarter of the cost. Pentax and Ricoh are both very reliable and considerably cheaper than Nikon.

I take pictures at night . I have one I will photo if possible you fight timed exposure on a tripod of seconds.

Adding light that I know isnt there as its simulated light .you tried to add light in a dark catacomb of a photo and it looked.
awful.
Sometimes artificial lights in a software will work but not fir me.I know a home that will not be recognized if I do post the Christmas .light effect and then show a daytime photo.

Even when I have used a natural light to get st helens in it really wasnt what my eye sees.I'm sure you won't agree to a simulated orchestra or any instrument being better to listen too then a live one.

Just my opinion.

No argument and I also despise Artificial Light Effects and amost never use them. If a photo is underexposed or overexposed there are four Curves available with Gimp and I bend all four of the until I get the desired light levels. On the Photos that, say two of the three people in thye shot are perfectly lit but one is horribly dark, I blow the Picture by 1300 percent and using the Point By Point Select, I select or in this case I did select the one person and bent all four curves, working and playing with her image, reduced back to 200%, for almost an hour before it looked exactly like I wanted.

It is a thing that will develop patients and skill.

I took that at 935 pm est. It was set on 1/4 exposure time with f stop of 4. zoom at about 70mm. its about what my eye was seeing if I aim the camera more at the sky an was at longer exposure time.

at night that shape isn't visible. I know its there an the lighting will follow it but I will strive not to show it. it will be nothing like this image .I know the area as I was passing by I stopped to look .
