I also wanted to point out for the record that although it is a very good thing for Christians to be set apart from other worldly people, it doesn't mean you can enjoy the same kinds of things.
A mouth full has been said here. Very clear and to the point. :)

Oyyyy... big eye roll here folks.
Well, the thread started off interesting.... and descended into excuses for watching sub-par filth. I mean honestly, and the films y'all mentioned aren't even good. Barely entertaining let alone, true art. Tim Burton? The only film that comes to mind is the first Michael Keaton Batman and everything else was trash with the same dark themes/motif over & over. Harry Potter has the Nazi/SS/Thule lightning bolt on his forehead, like ya... that's totally Kosher. I live in Hollywood actually and anyone in the town and especially, in the industry will tell you that this decade is a low for filmmaking in America- for the art as well as at the box office. The truly great time for film was the 70's and on up into the early 80's.

Kubrick. Now there's an evil filmmaker you should enjoy. Dark, but true artist and in every sense of the word. But he can also be traced to trashing our culture at large (to which he admitted to later on regretfully). Every director borrows from his style and almost every musician dons the Victorian-era Clockwork Orange clothes for at least 1 album cover.

I actually enjoy foreign films especially, those from the major studios out of India. They deal with real life topics and despite not being Christians their films are far more cleaner, well shot and interesting than, half of the pop trash that pours out of La La Land nowadays.

Hollywood is very pretty and fun to live in but also, a very sad place. I meet famous people often and I explain to them that they sold their soul for fool's gold out here in LA. So many go broke too when they don't go along with the agenda especially, African American talent. The smart celebs take the money and run... although they say its pretty hard to check out of the hotel here in California ;-)

:eek2Oh my gosh Reba, you actually liked what I had to say?? Wow, maybe there's some hope for you after all. The following video should be a meme if it isn't already. :lol

Willy Wonka's father was put in the script for the film. In the book his father is assumed to be dead since he menyions he doesn't have any family to speak of. Also, the parental/family issues were invented for the movie as well.

Similarities to the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version:

-They both use squirrels (not golden laying geese)

-Charlie's father works in a cap-screw factory

-Oompa Loompa songs use some of Dahl's original lyrics

-Loompaland, Prince Pondicherry, the Russian forged golden ticket, Arthur Slugworth, the cream vaults, hair toffee, the nutroom, Ficklegruber, Prodnose, and chocolate birds are all mentioned.

I suppose the squirrels and the Oompa Loompas were a huge factor for me. I love the mention of some more things that the first did not mention. Although, I know in 2005 we had a lot more technology for movies than we did in 1971 so things were not mentioned like the chocolate birds.

You list some good similarities. However, for me the fabrication for the movie of the father-as-cruel-dentist plus the depiction by Depp of Wonka (which imho is largely unlike how Wonka is in the books) throws the whole thing down the chute.

Harry Potter has the Nazi/SS/Thule lightning bolt on his forehead, like ya... that's totally Kosher.

So any depiction of a lightning bolt automatically means they're a Nazi?!? No Sir, I'm not buying it; that makes as much sense as what antifa says

although they say its pretty hard to check out of the hotel here in California ;-
Actually it's

but you can never leave"
