How can we decipher what is Spiritual or literal when we are studying the Bible? Doesn’t everyone have their own opinions when it comes to studying and can we trust those opinions? Can Gods word be Spiritual and literal at the same time? Only the Holy Spirit can answer these questions when we ask for wisdom and understanding because God is not the author of confusion and wants to reveal all the hidden mysteries of his word to us.

God is Spirit and much of his written word is also Spiritual as much as it is literal. Like man is human in the flesh, but Spiritual through the rebirth or renewal in Gods Holy Spirit. I believe the Bible is more Spiritual than literal in many ways as when we read a chapter at a time we can have many different points of views on it. When we take each chapter and read it verse by verse then as a whole it brings life to the whole chapter and reveals the importance of the knowledge God wants us to learn and share with others.

Jesus told us in Matthew 24:11 that many false prophets will arise and deceive many. We can see this more and more in our own present time then ever before and when you know truth taught by the Holy Spirit and not just take Gods word for granted by what others teach you then it is your responsibility to come against that which is a deceiving word being taught by those who teach with a carnal mind of rationalizing the word of God. This only produces ones own opinion or interpretation that can cause devastation in another’s understanding as truth is left by the wayside as the Holy Spirit is quenched and true wisdom and knowledge is never reached.

Each one of us will stand before the Lord Christ Jesus to give account for what we have taught others here on this earth and some will hear Jesus tell them well done and others will hear Jesus say I never knew you. Which do you want to hear? Be careful for what you hear and speak to others for your eternity depends on it.

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2 Peter 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not and their damnation slumbereth not.

1 Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

amen - i agree

this is an important issue - as evidenced by the various denominations who interpret scripture differently

for me i trust that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide me into all truth as i diligently seek God's wisdom

WORD vs SPIRIT
i have seen brilliant minds make what i consider mistakes in interpreting scripture - simply because they are leaning on their own understanding rather than God's understanding - Proverbs 3:5-6

i have seen very sincere and spiritual christians make mistakes because they did not read enough scripture in context (large portions rather than cherry picking a few scriptures) - Joshua 1:8 - John 8:32 - John 17:17

when i was a young christian i heard a saying - the Word/bible without the Spirit will cause us to dry up - the Spirit without the Word will cause us to blow up

i've made mistakes on both sides of this spectrum - and i messed up on properly interpreting scripture

GOD'S LEADING TEACHING
another thing that also applies to me at least is i can read the bible many times over and all of a sudden i see something i never saw before that means something to me today - imo that is God speaking to me directly from His words to give me instructions for my daily living

GOD'S WORD IS MULTI-FACETED AND MULTI-LAYERED
i have also seen others and experienced for myself that a scripture can have a double-meaning in my life - spiritual and literal - and i use both meanings equally validly

GOAL
for me the goal is finding out what pleases God and living that kind of life - Ephesians 5:10

hypothetical or theological discussions that don't directly affect my love for God are not important to me - for example - i don't care about osas - all i care about is am i pleasing God and how can i be even closer to God than i am now - i feel if we all encourage each other to walk a deeper walk with God these theological questions are unnecessary

i do care about questions that create roadblocks to another person's faith - so i investigate many biblical topics i am not concerned about simply because others need to know - for example creation science and quantum science helps some skeptics to see our awesome God does exist - and studying osas helps me talk to some people who are concerned about whether or not they will make it to heaven - so i study these things for their sake

awesome thread - thanks for posting

Of course if by "Spiritual" you are referring to a spiritual reality. (As compared to a material or physical reality.)

So when Paul said that some truth is "spiritually discerned" he was referring to a reality which only someone who has been born of the Spirit (filled with the Spirit, baptized in the Holy Spirit) can understand.

1Co 2:13-16 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Some folks use the word "spiritual" to mean "metaphor", "allusion", "for purposes of illustration only" and the like. I think that is a misunderstanding or misuse of the word "spiritual."

However, there are some parts of scripture (primarily apocalyptic) for which the meaning is hidden and, it seems to me, it is purposely hidden by the Holy Spirit.

Wonderfully put as it is only by the Holy Spirit and the full context of scripture that we learn that of what Jesus has already taught. This is why it is so important to Spiritually discern that of what others try to teach us, 1 John 4:1-6. We also need to be humbled enough to receive correction when needed. We are ever leaning and will never exhaust the teachings laid out in the scriptures.

By Spiritual I mean those things that are hidden in the word that can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit who teaches us all spiritual things that the carnal mind can not understand. The parables are a great example of this plus the apocalyptic.

Luke 8: 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Luke 8:17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
