Catholics often claim that they do not really pray to Mary but that they "ask" Mary to pray for them.

When you "ask" Mary, what does she say?

With 1.0 billion Catholics "asking"/praying to Mary every day/hour/minute, she must now be omnipresent!

This is getting old...

John 2:5 "do whatever He tells you" (referring to Jesus).

That, Gary, is what Mary says when one prays to her-- she points to Christ. Over and over and over and over again. That is her role.

EDITED to add:
I did not vote in your poll because I've no idea what you mean by "answer". Does she respond.. yes, with what I posted above. Does she "answer" prayers-- again, it depends on what you mean by "answer". All things are granted through God's grace.

What does Mary say to you when you pray to her?

A young ex-Catholic used to pray this prayer every morning. She said Mary never answered her.

Do you also pray this prayer? What does Mary say to you?

Catholic prayers to Mary said:
My Queen, My Mother, I offer
myself entirely to Thee.
And to show my devotion to Thee,
I offer Thee this day, my eyes,
my ears, my mouth, my heart,
my whole being without reserve.

Wherefore, good Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as Thy property and possession.

Amen

You are 100% correct. I would listen to Mary and take her advice. I f I were still RC and 'heard' her say tha, I would never pray to her again.

Now, what does Jesus say and tell us?

"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

"And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son."

"If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it."

"Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."

"And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you."

Now someone please show me one verse where Jesus says the same of Mary, or even where He suggests we pray through her, to Him?

"I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name."

Have you really kept His word, or have you denied Him also?

Here is the story of a young protestant man:
He heard his playmates on the playground praying a hail Mary. They did this every day and he thought it was one of the most beautiful prays. He soon commited it to memory and one day he said to his mother "I learned the most beautiful prayer." He recited it for her. His mother told him it was a heathen's prayer and that (basically) Catholics were going to Hell.
He stopped praying it. One day, as he was reading his Bible, he came across the angels greeting "Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee." Then he came to Elizabeth's greeting "Blessed are though among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus." Estatic, the boy ran to his mother saying "The prayer is in the Bible!" He started to say this prayer evey day.
Later in life his sister had a child who was very sick and the doctor told them he probably would not live. The boy, now grown, said to his sister "pray a Hail Mary with me and if the boy recovers convert your family to Catholisicm." Reluctantly she said the prayer, not believing anything could happen. The next day the child was fully recovered and the mother and her whole family converted.
This protestant that learned the Hail Mary on the playground is now a priest.
Mary brought him into her Son's Church and through her interssesion a child recovered. Not bad for a seemingly "dead" person.

Let us be abundantly clear, and then we shall expect to not be heard anyway.

We- meaning Orthodox and Catholic- do not pray in the name of Mary, or James; we do not pray TO these, at least in the sense that you mean; we, unlike our prayers-to-saints eschewing Protestant friends, do not believe that these people are either dead, or deaf, nor do we believe that people dedicated to prayer in this life take up chaize lounges and cocktails with little umbrellas in heaven. If God sends ministering angels from heaven to look after us, is heaven not imminently concerned with our welfare?

Hint: The answer is YES.

As we ask brethren on earth to pray for us, among the Church militant, we ask brethren in heaven to pray for us, from among the Church triumphant. Two names, One Church. Now why would we beseech the prayers of other Christians? Why do you protestants do so?
The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much
and
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men;
But why not just take all prayers to Jesus?
I don't know- do you know why Christians need to pray for one another? And can someone tell me why saints in the presence of the Almighty God are not good intercessors?

I know a few atheists who claim they no longer believe in God because He didn't answer their prayers. Mary doesn't aswer prayer, God does. But if Mary intercedes, and it seems that an answer doesn't come, then fast and pray and humble yourself. faith is the substance of things hoped for , the evidence of things not seen- by it the ancients were commended. Have faith in God, not in saints- but ask saints here, and if you will, there, to stand with you.

Heaven rejoices over lost sinner found. Does not heaven stretch forth hope and prayer that God's will would be completely manifest in the lives of even those who are 'found?'

If I ask my friend to pray for me by means of a note that simply says "please pray for me"- will God not show my friend how to pray? Will God not answer my friends prayer? Which prayer of faith will he not answer?

So much for semantics, Gary, there's an answer even for word games.

....do you know why Christians need to pray FOR one another....

Christians do not need to pray TO each other!

Roman Catholics pray TO Mary.

:)

My Queen, My Mother, I offer
myself entirely to Thee.
And to show my devotion to Thee,
I offer Thee this day, my eyes,
my ears, my mouth, my heart,
my whole being without reserve.

Wherefore, good Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as Thy property and possession.

Amen

This young girl prayed this prayer to Mary every day. When she came to saving faith in Jesus and was filled with the Holy Spirit, she immediately stopped praying this prayer and build a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • She now accepts Jesus as her King, her Brother. She offers
    herself entirely to Him.
And to show her devotion to her Lord Jesus Christ,
She offers Him this day, her eyes,
her ears, her mouth, her heart,
    her whole being without reserve.

Wherefore, good Saviour, as she is thine own, keep her, guard her as Thy property and possession.

    Amen

She has given herself to Jesus rather than Mary.

Which do you think is more Scriptural?

:-? :-?

Orthodox Christian who was misread as predicted said:

I am betting that even the highlighting does not sink in.

Perhaps this will sink in to one of the three with caps on...

Catholic prayer TO Mary....

My Queen, My Mother, I offer
myself entirely to Thee.
And to show my devotion to Thee,
I offer Thee this day, my eyes,
my ears, my mouth, my heart,
my whole being without reserve.

Wherefore, good Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as Thy property and possession.

Amen

Another prayer TO Mary....

Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel

O Most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein You are my Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand Your power.

O show me herein You are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee. (three times)

Sweet Mother, I place this cause in Your hands. (three times)

Amen

So Mary must assist you, help you, show you... there are none who can withstand her power!!!!

I prefer to call on the Lord in Jesus' name.

  • John 14:13-14 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

John 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
This is what Jesus taught us. He said: ".... how much more will your heavenly father give good gifts to those who ask Him." (Not Mary!)

I prefer to go to Jesus rather than Mary.

Jesus said: Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

I accept Your yoke Lord!

:)

Well, if you want to believe and promote the fallacy that the dead saints' immortal souls are in heaven right now, then expect heresy and unbiblical truths such as 'praying to them' to come about.

One falsehood creates another.

Anyway...

I agree with our Catholic brethren. Sure they can pray for you if they are in heaven just like we can pray for each other. If the Protestants want to open the 'dead saints in heaven' door, then accept the fact that our Catholic brothers here have a point.

However, prayers like the ones Gary Bee has shown are blasphemous and nothing more than Marian adoration no matter which way you slice it. For all those who say, 'We don't pray TO Mary', many more (including your own writings) tell a different story with prayers such as these.

Having said that, Henryk Gorecki created a beautiful choral arrangement of this text specifically for PJP II's visit to his country in 1987. This is my little bit of Marianism as I love this song and am a choral director. What can I say? "Pray for this sinner, now and at the hour of my death." 8-)

TOTUS TUUS - HENRYK GORECKI

"Totus tuus, sum Maria. Mater nostri redemptoris. Virgo dei, Virgo pia. Mater mundi salvatoris"

Here is my blasphemous prayer "to" my wife:
You, o fair lady, have spoken to the waves that would engulf your dear ones
crying out "be still, thou shalt not sweep away my love nor the seed of my body"
nothing could stand against your words, for the Lord had spoken
"Speak to that mountain, and it shall be moved."

I cry out to thee, dear lady, beseech the Sovereign for me
that He might show mercy, show mercy
For He has granted to you the ability to grant my prayers
because He hears yours, and is moved.

So what was said? I asked my wife to pray for me, because I recognize her faith and how often God answers her prayers of faith. I asked that she would 'save' our children and friends by beseeching the Savior to do so.

I guess poetic language offends the iconoclasts also

Roman catholic prayers TO Mary

I offer Thee this day, my eyes,
my ears, my mouth, my heart,
my whole being without reserve.

Wherefore, good Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as Thy property and possession.

Amen

  • Do you also offer yourself entirely to Mary?
Do you also devote yourself to Mary?
Do you also dedicate your day to Mary?
Do you also offer your eyes to Mary?
Do you also offer your ears to Mary?
Do you also offer your mouth to Mary?
Do you also offer your heart to Mary?
Do you also offer your whole being to Mary?
    ... without reserve?
Do you also pray to Mary to keep you?
Do you also pray to Mary to guard you?
Do you also proclaim that you are Mary's property?
Do you also proclaim that you are Mary's possession?

How sad!

:sad

Instead, think about the more Biblical prayer and thought:

  • I offer myself entirely to Jesus
I also devote myself to Jesus
I also dedicate my day to Jesus
I also offer my eyes to Jesus
I also offer my ears to Jesus
I also offer my mouth to Jesus
I also offer my brain and thoughts to Jesus
I also offer my heart to Jesus
I also offer my whole being to Jesus, without reserve
I also pray to Jesus to keep me
I also pray to Jesus to guard me
I also proclaim that I am Jesus' property
I also proclaim that I am Jesus' possession
I also proclaim that I am a slave to Jesus

So which is it? Which should I pray in the morning?

:)

AMEN TO THAT, CatholicChristian! (I prefer the full word!) :)

In the poll, if you select YES, they expect to have you explain how she answered to you! Therefore, I did not vote there either! The poll is not simply flawed, it is obviously slanted. It is almost like asking you, "When was the last time you beat your momma?"

How does Mary respond? Well, I prayed to her that my last newborn granddaughter, born premature, would be found to be OK, after doctors thought she had undeveloped hip structure. The children's hospital in New Orleans gave her a complete exam and found her to be just fine! PRAISE GOD, the ultimate source of all answers to prayer!

I will always believe that Mary conveyed my prayers to God, and that God made her right. I can't prove it medically - I simply believe it.

God bless,

For those who believe, no proof is necessary;
For those who do not believe, no proof is possible.

Mary took zealous care of Christ as an infant and as a child. She walked with Him on the way to His crucifixion. Yes, I offer myself to her knowing that as she was a faithful mother to Christ, the Son of God, she will be zealous for His children here on earth and pray for them that they may grow close to Christ her son, who she loved as no one else has ever loved. That in NO way puts her in a position that is evenly remotely equal to or superior to Christ's. Is your guardian angel superior to God? No, but he guides you. Likewise, Mary guides us to her Son. "Do whatever He tells you."

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages
call me blessed.
(Luke 1:46-48)

Well then listen to Mary... or if you can't hear her, at least read what is written in the Bible. "Do whatever He tells you."

Jesus tells you that He is the way (not Mary), the truth (not Mary), the life (not Mary).

In the morning when you "offer yourself entirely to Mary" and "dedicate your day to Mary" and "offer your whole being to Mary, without reserve".... which part do you leave for Jesus?

ALL OF IT, Gary, ALL OF IT! All of it is to Jesus, the Savior of the Word!

Mary is nothing without her Divine Son. And I notice that He handed her care to the beloved disciple from the cross, "Here is your mother."

John represents me and other faithful Catholics as considering her, "Our Mother" as part of the "Family of Christians."

Open your eyes and come join "The Family," Gary!

Jesus described for us two ways, the broad one leading to destruction and the narrow one that leads to life. How can I know the way that leads to heaven and avoid the other?

The Gospel is the true way to life because it is God's message to humanity. People have invented several religions but all of them are false. The Bible warns us that 'the world through its wisdom did not know God' (1 Corinthians 1:21).

God's message is recorded in the Bible. It was written by chosen people who were guided by the Holy Spirit. We can trust the Bible because it is God's book. We can also be confident that it is a sure guide to Heaven. The Holy Scriptures 'are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus' (2 Timothy 3:15).
