I never knew there was so much confusion about the timing of the two resurrections until I had seen several people on Christian forums debating and struggling to understand them. Many believe the righteous dead will be resurrected along with the wicked unbelievers. Many others believe the righteous dead will be resurrected when Christ returns, and that the wicked unbelievers won’t be resurrected until after Christ’ millennial reign (1000 years). So I was thinking it might be helpful if I broke these down, in order to shed more light on this topic. Hopefully some will be able to grasp a better understanding. Let’s begin with scripture.
.
Daniel 12:1-2 (KJV) – And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
.
In the passage above, Daniel is given limited knowledge about the resurrection. We can see that there are two resurrections if we look closely enough, but I’m not sure Daniel gathered that much. However, he may have noticed that many that slept in the dust of the earth shall awake, but not all. He probably would have noticed, however, that some shall awake to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. There’s really no way to know what Daniel was thinking at that time, because he was then told to shut up the words and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased (Dan. 12:4). Now let’s continue.
.
Acts 24:15 (NKJV) – I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust. . In the verse above, the apostle mentions a resurrection of both, the just and the unjust. On the surface, it appears that both will occur at the same time. And this is what many believe will happen, while many others do not believe they will both occur at the same time. Those that don’t believe both will occur at the same time have a good reason, as we shall see shortly. But first, let’s look at what John said, who was quoting Christ in the passage below.
.
John 5:28-29 (KJV) – Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
.
In the passage above, Christ said the hour is coming when all who are in the graves shall hear His voice. However, Christ also mentioned that there are, in fact, two resurrections. He called the first the resurrection of life, and the second the resurrection of damnation. If there was no more information about this subject, it would appear that both of these resurrections would occur simultaneously. But let’s not forget Daniel’s prophecy. Remember, Daniel was told to shut up the words and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. We already know that Daniel did not have a full understanding. Then centuries later, Christ came and told His disciple’s almost the same exact thing that Daniel was told as well. However, it should be noted that when Christ told His disciples about the resurrection of life and the resurrection of damnation, this was (before) they had received the Holy Spirit. And this was also (before) they knew anything about reigning with Christ for 1000 years.
.
Sometimes Christ would not tell His disciple’s more than their worldly minds could understand before they received the Holy Spirit. It was not until several years later that this knowledge of the resurrection was increased. The new knowledge would not be known until the book of Revelation was written. And it was John who later received the revelation of Christ on the Isle of Patmos, who wrote much more information about the two different resurrections in chapter 20. And this new knowledge changes everything. If you want a better understanding of the two resurrections, you can read about them below.
.
Resurrection of Life (Just or Righteous): And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.Revelation 20:1-6 (KJV).
.
Resurrection of Damnation (Unjust or wicked unsaved): And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.Revelation 20:7-15 (KJV).
.
Now we know that the first resurrection will occur 1000 years before second one occurs. The righteous or just will be resurrected when Christ returns and they will reign with Christ for 1000 years. The wicked unbelievers will not be resurrected until after the thousand years are completed, when they will be judged at the great white throne. Those whose name’s are not found written in the Lamb’s book of life will be cast into the lake of fire.
.
Only the dead in Christ will be resurrected when Christ appears in the clouds (Matt. 24:30-31, 1 Thes. 4:16-7). This first resurrection includes both Old and New Testament saints who have died; the elect who are alive and remain until the rapture will be changed (1 Cor. 15:51-52 ), and then every martyr killed after the rapture, which are the saints that will be overcome by the beast (Rev. 6:9-11, 13:7, 20:4-6).
.
Note: New Testament martyrs killed before the rapture will be resurrected with the dead in Christ.
.
Many of those who believe both resurrections will occur simultaneously, also believe the judgment of nations, when Christ returns at the second coming to separate the sheep and goats is the resurrection of the unjust or unsaved. They assume the goats are the resurrection of the wicked unbelievers simply because they are cast into the lake of fire. However, there is no indication whatsoever, that the sheep and goats are resurrected. Both groups are living on the earth when Christ returns. The sheep will enter into the millennial kingdom in their mortal bodies. The goats, which includes the beast and false prophet, the kings of the nations and their armies that gather against Jerusalem, and everyone that takes the mark of the beast will be cast into the lake of fire. Remember, only the dead in Christ will be resurrected at the first resurrection. The rest of the dead will not be resurrected until after the thousand years.

Haven't taken the time to read it all yet, but here is another scripture for you to consider.

Hosea 6:1-3
Come, and let us return unto the Lord:
for he hath torn, and he will heal us;
he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
After two days will he revive us:
in the third day he will raise us up,
and we shall live in his sight.
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord:
his going forth is prepared as the morning;
and he shall come unto us as the rain,
as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Nice one, ezrider!

Using Psalm 90:4 & 2 Pet. 3:8 as the pattern, after two days = 2000 years (last days - plural).
Raising up in the 3rd day = millennial reign - 1000 years (last day - singular).

Of course, there is no mention of raising up the wicked or resurrection of damnation here, though.

Thanks for sharing with us.

This first thing I would like to clarify is that the resurrection/rapture are one event.

The dead in Christ will rise first then those who alive and remain will be caught up together with them.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 4:17

...caught up together with them,
Is clear, in that both the resurrection and rapture are one event.

There are no Christians dying or being overcome by the beast, after the rapture, because all Chritians will be in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

Can we agree on this first point of discussion?

Hi JLB,
I basically agree with your comment above. But not your assumption below...

There are no Christians dying or being overcome by the beast, after the rapture, because all Chritians will be in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

Can we agree on this first point of discussion?
Do you have any scripture to support this?

In my view, the martyrs who are killed before the resurrection/rapture will be raised up first with the dead in Christ. But there will be other believers that will be overcome by the beast after (Rev. 13:7-8, 14:13). These will not be resurrected and gathered in the clouds/air, but instead, their souls will be seen under the altar in heaven, and they will be told to wait until all of their brothers are killed, and only then will God avenge their blood (wrath - Rev. 6:9-11). And they, too, will also return and reign with Christ (Rev. 20:4).

Of course, there is no mention of raising up the wicked or resurrection of damnation here, though.

No, while it does not directly mention the resurrection of damnation like Dan 12 and John 5, but the inference is there.

After two days will he revive us:
in the third day he will raise us up,
and we shall live in his sight.

In the third day he shall raise us up. This would be the resurrection to life and the resurrection to damnation. There is no distinction in this raising up.

Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord:

After we are raised up, then we shall know if we follow to know the Lord: Those who follow on to know the Lord are those raised to life in Christ, who follow after the Spirit of Christ by faith. But not all follow on to know the Lord: many follow on after the works of the law instead and hold to the image of man and his death on the cross. These have been raised in Christ to the resurrection of damnation. This can be seen in the parable of the wheat and tares. Let them both grow together...

Romans 14:7-9
For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

No, while it does not directly mention the resurrection of damnation like Dan 12 and John 5, but the inference is there.

For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

Not sure I follow your line of thinking, but this is pretty cut and dry:

Rev. 20:4-5 - And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Dear Brother rollinTHUNDER, I do not know that the following scripture fits your outline, but concerning those that will live not again until the 1000 years were finished of Rev 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

The taking away below is not the great rapture of the righteous many books promote. Those taken are to be judged later as them in Noe’s day.

Mat 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Mat 24:40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
I'd like to bring your attention to the phrase "Thy people" in Dan 12:1. Who other than Israel is referred to here?
Next in that same verse we read "there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered." Does this set off bells as to being the beginning of the second half of the tribulation?

Haven't taken the time to read it all yet, but here is another scripture for you to consider.

Hosea 6:1-3
Come, and let us return unto the Lord:
for he hath torn, and he will heal us;
he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
After two days will he revive us:
in the third day he will raise us up,
and we shall live in his sight.
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord:
his going forth is prepared as the morning;
and he shall come unto us as the rain,
as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
Actually understanding this scripture is a great place to get a broad view of what provides for everyone's needs. I still have part of it to yet understand.

I Peter 1:10
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who foretold the grace that would come to you, searched and investigated carefully,
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

Hi JLB,
I basically agree with your comment above. But not your assumption below...

In my view, the martyrs who are killed before the resurrection/rapture will be raised up first with the dead in Christ.

I totally agree.

Yes of course I have scripture to support this.

  • Paul described the coming of the Lord to gather His people at the resurrection/rapture.

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

  • Those who are Christ's, that have died, and those who are alive and remain will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the clouds, at His coming.

  • Those who are Christ's who have died, together with those who are alive and remain are caught together... at His coming.

That's comprises all those who are His.

20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23

  • Paul sent a second letter to the Thessalonians, to clarify a misunderstanding about this.

Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8

Two major things happen at His coming:

  • At His coming, His people are gathered together unto Him, in the air, at the resurrection/rapture.
  • The antichrist is destroyed by the brightness of His coming.

The resurrection happens at death

Generally agree. Upon the death of any believer they are absent from the body, present with our Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:8
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

In the body it is a planting in weakness, dishonor, corruption and the natural state of affairs. 1 Cor. 15:42-45

Technically speaking we are already seated in the heavenly places:

Ephesians 2:6
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

But in our current planting in the "vile body" this matter is and will remain hidden from us:

Colossians 3:3
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

When Phil. 3:21 transpires, it transpires as each believer departs their flesh, but at the end their is a collective harvesting of all believers and the Body of Christ as it pertains to "every member" will be complete, Heb. 11:40, and the wicked world/generation will be torched.

2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

At that point it's game over. Pretty well eliminates multiple resurrections or various stages of rapture or resurrections. It will simply be "the end."

What the opening poster goes astray on is the "identity of the dead." The dead in scriptures are the devil and his messengers. It is they who will be taken up or resurrected if you will prior to Gods final solution for them, which is the LoF. Until that time however it is THEY who walk and talk amongst mankind as the overlords of the flesh. Post resurrection there is a new earth, heavenly Jerusalem will come down to that new earth. And prior to the final destruction they will be loosed momentarily, but will fail and be put away eternally.

The second resurrection pertains to the devil and his messengers, as found in Rev. 20:

Revelation
20 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

Christ also mentioned that there are, in fact, two resurrections. He called the first the resurrection of life, and the second the resurrection of damnation
no body has denied this what we don't know is timing just like we dont know exactly when the judgement takes place { Now we know that the first resurrection will occur 1000 years before second one occurs. } i disagree the Bible says a thousand years are as a day and day as a thousand years 2 Peter 3:8 we dont know know GOD timing of events

Discuss prophecy and scripture pointing to the last days.

  1. I totally agree.

Yes of course I have scripture to support this.

Paul described the coming of the Lord to gather His people at the resurrection/rapture.

Those who are Christ's, that have died, and those who are alive and remain will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the clouds, at His coming.

Those who are Christ's that have died, together with those who are alive and remain... at His coming.

Paul sent a second letter to the Thessalonians, to clarify a misunderstanding about this.

And for sure the resurrection of Jesus is the basis for the resurrection of the end.

    Hosea 6:1-3
Is a pretty good parallel for
    I Peter 2:24

The days of the passion have parallels: Stripes before death (healing)
Visit souls in prison (Abraham bosom folks receive sermon by Jesus).
Resurrection of Jesus (first born of dead)

Questions. Not traps but questions.
1.
In the parable of the rich man and Lazurus,
Do you have two groups of dead folks? Is one group in faith (with the ability to hear the gospel at Christ's resurrection), and the other group dead to faith and awaiting judgement.

Are some good dead and some bad dead?

2.
I Corinthians 15:51 KJV
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

Are some of these dead in Christ, and some in Christ but still alive?

3.
Matthew 25:46 KJV
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

So can you select good and bad out of the physical dead?
And
Can you choose good and bad out of the living?

4.
Are those in the lake of fire the condemned that have no chance?
..................
The complication occurs when Jesus visits Abraham's bosom and changes their status (there are a couple of differing opinions here).

If you want to, just do not comment.

Now this is a trick question.
Matthew 13:30 KJV
Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Does that scripture have a logical interface.

There is only one resurrection mentioned in those passages.

JESUS IS THE RESURRECTION.

THE FIRST RESURRECTION IS CHRIST.

All of those who are in Christ are part of the the first resurrection, the resurrection of Christ.

John 5:21
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

The Son quickens whom he wills as part of the first resurrection, the resurrection of Christ, the first fruit from the dead. On these the second death has no power.

The Father will raise up whom He will at the white throne judgement, when those who remained dead in Christ will be judged according to their works under the law, not by their faith in Christ. This is the second death.
