ungodly christian rock music
AvBunyan wrote that in another thread, and I did not like that. Because I am a musician who plays music for God and to God. And you cannot put god in a box. People have different taste in music. Christian rock is reaching people that otherwise would not hear the Gospel. Some like Christian rock, some like Christian R&B, some like Christian Jazz, Some like Christian country and western, some like old time gospel. God does not have a problem with this music so why should people put this music down. Isaiah 42:10, and a few places in the book of Psalms, say sing a new song. And guess what I will. No one should say that this music is ungodly because it does not sound like the old traditional gospel.
The music that I sing and play on my drums along with the other instruments, comes from the Spirit of God, we also play old gospel too. But you cannot put God in a box, and say that He will not except this new style gospel. That proclaims Jesus is Lord, and uplifts the name of God. Millions of people today can identify with this modern gospel music. I am not angry at AvBunyan but that comment sent up a red flag within me.

Christian Rock Music ROCKS!!!!!!

I totally agree with you!!! I myself listen to Thousand foot Krutch, seventh day slumber, Third Day, Mercyme, and several other awesome bands, and they are definately praising God, and the spirit, is always moving, and touching my heart, and my life as I sing along. God loves it when we praise him even through Christian Rock!!!

This is something that is often forgotten today. God can use anything to His Glory, Good and Bad. There is nothing sinful about using rock or rap to tell the story of Jesus and to preach God's glory. So there is no reason to compare it to secular artists.

Many people enjoy the hymns and say that only they should be sung because the new music is too (whatever).

These same people forget that even they hymns were new at one point!

We have a great praise and worship band who use guitars, keys, and drums.

While somewhat sitting the fence on this issue, I just thought I'd mention that many hymns were originally taken from tavern tunes of the day. True.

My pastor once read an article that had been run in a newspaper. It talked about how the "new" music wasn't honoring God because it had too pronounced of a beat, too many instruments, ect., ect. Basically, it was just someone complaining about the "new" music. Guess what - the article was written sometime like the 1700s! That's about the same time period that many of today's popular Southern gospel hymns were written, and the article could have been mistaken to have been written today. Needless to say, our preacher made a strong case with that article.

I must say, I agree with what you all are saying. The Bible says to make a "joyful noise unto the Lord." It doesn't say that if it don't come from the Heavenly Highway Hymnbook, then you better not be singing it. I understand personal preference, but it's wrong to make that personal preference into doctrine. That's something that many people seem to forget all too easily.

Well, I for one love a lot of secular rock music. I have three areas in my c.d. case. One for Christian music, one for country music, and one for rock music. One of my favorite bands right now is Seether.

The music that I sing and play on my drums along with the other instruments, comes from the Spirit of God, we also play old gospel too.

The frequencies produced by the electric guitar are said to be mind control instruments by many Satanic rock groups I am familiar with ......

Ever seen a Mosh Pit or been in one?????? You wont get that kind of placebo effect from a violen!!!!! I have saw people killed in those pits no joke at a Soulfly concert.......

You will not get the "sound" of Slayer through a Trumpet or Flute..... :-?

There is something intrinsically dark about the electric guitar and Santana called it his "little electric snake".....

What is dark about the guitar is not the guitar itself, it the style of music being played and whether it's set in major or minor chords. We can actually be grateful for those Christians many centuries ago who brough the major chord to the forefront. Mostly everything up to that point sounded like dirges.

I often play It Is Well (with my soul) on my accoustic (while warming up during rehersal) with a couple of the ladies singing in harmony. It sounds sweet. :-D

IMO, you generalize a lot Soma. 8-)

You may have a point....

But be careful with that stuff.

They dont say "Drugs, Sex, and Rock and Roll" for nothing.

I have seen some crazed out dudes at rock concerts that had to be demon possesed.

There is just no other way to put it.

One time I got tossed by a 350 lb Sumo wrestler with an executioner mask about ten feet at a Rammstein concert.

That aint no Holy Spirit! Thats the spirit of PAIN!

We've been down this convo road before. You are "preaching to the choir" so to speak. I though I was hopeless at one point in my life. God had other plans though. I enjoy the music I enjoy, whether it be "Christian" or quality secular music in almost the same way I enjoy studying the word for an hour or two each night. Sometimes I even do both. ;-)

Try sitting down while studying with Yes' "Close to the Edge" playing in the background. 8-)

In charge of who is there in charge of me.
Do I look on blindly and say I see the way?
The truth is written all along the page.
How old will I be before I come of age for you?

Much care must be used in manipulating sound of any kind.

Music (sound) in itself is a vibration, and conveys attitude and provokes emotions to rise up out of our nervous system.

It's what you do with the musical note (sound) that creates the response.

It has been discovered/revealed through Scientific study the effects of vibrations on the nervous system. If people think music in itself has no effect on emotional reactions, they are mistaken. even a shrieking high pitched note from a guitar can annoy you! And if anyone thinks certain music doesn't provoke sensual arousal they are mistaken there also. You can't take a sound and make it something different. Vibrations are energies that have effect on all matter. Sound can break a glass if the resonance of it is at a high enough frequency. What makes people think music doesn't have any effect on them? Certain beats of music are known to raise blood pressure, and even cause epileptic seizures in those who are extremely sensitive.

All sound has effect of some kind or another. It's what you do with it that counts. Sound is a mighty force. If used purposefully or improperly or even subliminally, it can have serious impact on matter and on living beings. Did you know that sound can be used to alter emotions? What makes anyone think that certain types of music have no effect on the attitude of people? Musical notes have effect on the nervous system and provoke attitude, they provoke peace and they provoke hostility. All sound is of effect.

Don't take the vibrations of music or any kind of sound for granted. And don't kid yourselves into thinking certain types of music is harmless. Repeated exposure to certains sounds do have effect on us, be them peaceful or aggressive! The attitude is effected.

Would you take the music style of Satan worshipers and use it to worship God? :-? Why would anyone take the beat of a strip teaser and use it to sing praises to God? Why would anyone take the beat of a pagan ritual and use it to praise God? Why would anyone take the beat of a vulgar attitude such as rap music and punk rock and heavy metal and use it to praise God? Why would anyone take the attitude of certain music and use it to praise God?

  • To take the music of someone like Marilyn Manson and just change the lyrics to praise God is disgusting!

To take the vulgar attitude of certain rock bands and put it to music and say it is praising God because you changed the lyrics is utter nonsense.

To take the music of sensuality and praise God to the tune of sexually sensual music is disgusting! [/*:m:18c5e]

Why would anyone think that certain music is of no consequence or effect? :o

Don't get me wrong, I am not against tasteful music, such that doesn't provoke ungodly attitude, be it secular or so called "christian" type music.
We must know scripture in regards to the character of Godly people and hold those standards. The attitudes of people these days are all too harsh. The gentlemanly and ladylike behaviors are in jeopardy of extinction. God destroyed whole cities for their lack of godliness. We need to preserve godly Christ-like behavior, Not promote vulgarity and nasty attitudes. Music (sound) is a reflection of attitude and emotions, and our emotions ARE roused by sound/vibrations.

Even if we set aside the music...... and not even consider it as being a factor. The attitude of the gangsta and the sensual is being mimicked, and I ask this..... Since when is harsh attitude that is presented by many of these rap, heavy metal, puck, rock musician, with their mean and nasty attitudes and behaviors which and are either geared toward carnal sensuality, and gangster-like behaviors of a hard core attitude and attitudes of sensually promiscuousness-like attitude considered Godly Christ-like behavior? What of God's earth is gentle-manly or lady-like about those type attitudes? :o

As Christians, we all need to be careful of the music and attitude we present to God as praises to his Goodness and Glory!

Isaiah 5:20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

:-? It saddens me to see that many people are lacking understanding of such things. I thought that people where taught these things in science classes in jr. High and High school. :-? And, anyone who studies human behavior would know that light (color) and sound (vibrations) all have effects of living beings. God wants us to be in His light. Not to dwell in the darkness. There are sounds/vibrations that drag you down and create situations that are ungodly. Please do not take LIFE and the things IN this world for granted. :sad

Enjoy good healthy music, but please do not confuse the good with the not so good. Know what influences are being presented to you, be it subliminal or outright.

Know the absolute truths about God's laws of cause and effect. And utilize them wisely.

This is a bunch of false garbage with no scientific basis.

Great information. Now everybody has their likes and dislikes, some like it hard some like it soft. Now I am well aware of the influence that sound can have on a person. And I still listen to some secular music,, now if it is tainted with ungodly stuff, I will not listen to it. I like all types of music, rock, metal, R&B some country and western, classical, opera, and of course gospel. God knows that everybody is different. Like metal music was not intended to be bad.
Paul said in Romans 14:14 that nothing is bad within itself. But man will take a good thing and taint it.

I don't think it is wise or logical to dismiss what Relic is saying. There IS scientific proof of what he is saying and one doesn't even NEED scientific proof.

music is sound. Sound effects our bodily chemistry and electricity. Our mind is susceptible to sound and our moods are effected by different sounds and frequencies. Don't think for a minute that some musicians don't manipulate sound and music to garner a reaction or a feeling from an audience.

I think the principle of music must be applied here to ALL music, not just 'rock' music.

1) Does the music uplift me spiritually or merely stimulate me physically?

2) Is the spirit of God present in this music/concert/lives of the people?

3) Does this music make me aggressive?

4) Does the music take away from the lyrical content? Is it overshadowed?

Such things need to be put forth. I know my brother used to listen to 80s and 90s 'speed/'death' metal bands with a Christian slant (Deliverance, Vengeance Rising (of whom the lead singer later became a Satanist!!)) and I can tell you that the above things did not apply. The 'it is only about the lyrics' argument doesn't hold much water.

God doesn't work through anarchy, aggression, anxiety or aggravation. Music that is used for this purpose doesn't have a place as a medium for the message. When you see Christians at Christian 'rock' concerts flashing the Il cornuto and moshing at the front of the stage, that is not the spirit of Christ and the message is lost in the worldy imitation.

Music DOES affect you, lyrics or not. Anybody who says otherwise has no clue what the purpose and history of music is all about.

Wow. Sounds like you like most music out there. I agree that whatever style you like, it's the message that makes it what it is. I am a rocker and a longtime rock guitarist. I am currently in a Christian group that plays original material AC/DC style. Basically, straight ahead rock. The heart of the music is evangelistic and the visionary/leader of the group has great heart for ministry. As a musician I figure if one is going to have the greatest impact musically for God, it will most likely be with styles that he knows and loves. I believe that God uses the cultural elements that we've come out of for His purpose in various ways.

aaaah, yes! :biggrin
Hey Vic, Like bob hope used to sing.....
Thanks for the memories..... :-D

Geez! The music was/is so powerful, I don't even remember the words....
hmmmmm, I wonder..... are they locked in the back of my mind somewhere to one day come spewing out of me once again? :smt017

Da, daa da da
Da, daa da da
Da, daa da da

(where did THAT come from? what song was that from? :o )

Is that the sound of a record skipping or one of the background verses going on in echoes of my mind? Oh! , excuse me..... I was always so stoned when I listened to them.

Maybe I should dust off the old albums and give them a listening too now that I haven't played those albums in about 10 years!

Da, daa da da
Da, daa da da
Da, daa da da

Yeah, just bits and pieces of those albums come back to mind.....
Even though I have most of their ablums... I don't recall much of them.
I think because I was so stoned back in those days that I was tripping on the music while under the influence of pot, instead of paying attention to A REAL PURPOSE and DIRECTION IN LIFE. I was too stoned all the time. I was a pot head hippy hooked on my music, drugs and partying. Wow! what a waste that was... I wasted 6 years of my life being hooked on a life of partying while being married to a musician. Whew! That was wild! :-? Even though we were married and we have a daughter together, I thank God for bringing me out of it!

Oh yes, back to the subject of the music of YES

You and me.....

Round about....

Aaaah Yes! That music of those days impacted me so much.... I barely payed attention to the lyrics.
Just got stoned and got lost in the intensity of the music.

Actually, the intensity of the music of Yes was not much different than the intensity of the music of Deep Purple. I have and album by Deep Purple performing in concert with the Pennsylvania Philharmonic orchestra (no lyrics, just wonderful concert music! )
I wonder if I sit down and listen to any of those albums now a day...... Would I have the same reactions that I had when I was in my 20's? Probably not, because of course, I would do it WITHOUT being stoned out of my mind while tripping into some far out psycholdelic la la land!
:rainbowafro: :rainbow1: :B-fly: :usa :silly:

I'm sure I would still enjoy the "Music", but I don't know about the lyrics.
I'll have to check them out now that I'm older, wiser and drug free! 8-)

Point being.... aside from the lyrics of some songs....the "music" of YES does not provoke an attitude of arrogance, sensuality and vulgarity like some other tunes like head banging, some gansta rap, and some other "sounds" with the rythm and beats that provoke certain attitudes and emotions. Know what I mean?

It's all in the attitude.
That's what needs to be held in check. We do need to be careful what we subject ourselves too.

So, now..... Do I have to go through all of my old albums and see if I have any that provoke such emotions and attitudes?
hmmmmm. Ya think the Rolling Stones might be a bad influence and provoke some distasteful attitudes? :o OY VEY! Do I have to go through and throw out most of my very old albums even though I haven't listened to them in years? I have a huge collection! I would think that as long as I don't allow them to "Influence me and control my attitudes and emotions, then I have no problem. So what do I do? Write a note on each jacket and say do not allow this music and or lyrics to control your emotions and attitudes? sheesh! :o

.

le tme add something here, i have walked quite a long road when it comes to music. what types, what influences it has, etc... I am a hardned METAL fan, and I always justified this type pf music (non christian metal) on my own account. Yes i have searched this globe for christian metal bands, and nothing compared to MY metal band i was listening to, only until i one day got this AMAZING revelation...

you have to ask yourself this IMPORTANT question: do you want to listen to music that SOUNDS good, or listen to music that DOES good. this is in effect what is happening.

listening to non-christian music isnt necesseraly wrong, but it doesnt have even remotely the same effect on your mind, spirit that Gospel music has. its as simple as this, listening to godpel music instead GROWS your spirit towards God while listening to non-christian music simply doesnt do anything to get you closer to God. (in most cases).

each one of us must ask ourselves that question. :)
