My children used to play Mario brothers,Donkey Kong,Centapede,Frogger. But if their friends brought their video games from home I examined them thorougly. My son had a friend who did that reguarly. He brought over video games I would not allow.I don't know if he thought I had "stupid" tattooed on my forehead. Many times I had to send the kid home to take back the inappropriate game.To this day my kids are glad I did that. They respect me.They had a good set of morals and values set before them.

I like playing video games. I also like the strategy and creative ones, but be careful with games like Clash of Clans. Clash of Clans is a world wide online multiplayer strategy game in real time. In the game players build a city and place different types of defense weapons like cannons to defend their city from attacks by other players. The problem with this game is that it is in "real time". This means that even when your not on your device playing the game other players can come attack you. You must then go online every few hours to rebuild any damage that was done to your city. Also you must continually go online to upgrade buildings since they take a certain amount of time to build. For example an archer tower might take 1 day of "real time".

I hope this isn't confusing. The main point is that this game is requires people to devote a lot of their time to it in order to be good at it. You can't just play it every few days. You also can't sit and play it for hours in a row because there is only so much that you can do in one sitting. In order to be any good at it you will have to devote 10 to 15 minutes of your time spread through the day. Does this make sense? I know first hand because I played this game and had to delete it off my phone.

We recently downloaded a free game from Big Fish, that's rather like that as far as it taking time to build things, etc. but you are not competing against others online. It's call Farm Up, it's rather like Farmville building, planting, animals, buying and selling product, etc. You can pick things to grow, like pumpkins that take several hours to grow, etc. Fun game. Makes you think about not spending energy and money unwisely. If you don't have energy to water your crops they die. There are four characters you have to set to tasks and manage their time.

That sounds neat.

We have Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong.
We also have friends of Jake's that play games he is not allowed to play, one boy in particular. Lexy talked to the boy's dad so those games don't come to our house and when the boys are at the other house the dad doesn't let them play those games. The dad understood and respected that. So it has worked out OK. One game in particular comes to mind, Halo.
It also gave Lexy a chance to explain to both the boy and his dad. Planting seeds in a quiet way.

That sounds good. Games can be educational and entertaining at the same time. I think people should be careful about games that are set up in a way that require you to periodically log on and play. Now I know that nobody is required to do anything, but even with Farm Town your crops will die if you don't log on and water them daily or every other day.

I am being cautious about the mysticism content that is in games. When I was growing up my parents somewhat monitored it, but we played games that had magic and dragons and stuff like that and it did not have any negative effect on us. I think we were very aware that it was all just make believe. I agree with you though that we should be careful. I have a 7 year and 3 year old.

there's a movie called "Amish: A Secret Life" posted on youtube by Weltkirche.
this family the bbc photographed over time were (previously) re-baptized (immersed in Yeshua) Amish (still Amish) and for that and for letting the photography/movie/documentary be made risked being shunned.
their testimony is wonderful, and they address very simply and clearly about video games and other concerns Christians often overlook or never even think about (but probably should).

Is it the Amish who after sheltering the children from the world, when they are around sixteen turn them loose altogether to some kind of a big bash, Rumspringa, Alcohol, whatever, with no adult supervision at all?
I've wonder how many shotgun weddings there are after that? And how many kids leave the community and decided not to join the church and are shunned for the rest of their lives, get married and have children who never know their grandparents or other family?
The man who lived here who had three wives and twenty kids did business with the Ohio Amish all the time.

Hm I thought you can switch off the monsters? As for the magical stuff, since the OP's child was into LotR and Narnia I guess some magic content shouldn't be a problem with the parents.
Maybe you can, I'm not sure. I still don't know what to think about the mysticism stuff. What are we to expect to be a negative effect from our kids seeing it?

That was always a concern of mine. What kind of games are they playing at friend's house's?I figured I can not keep a plastic bubble around them.As long as they knew my values and they knew they were sneaking because they were not allowed those kinds of games at home that was ok with me.

All just make believe? That is one of Satan's biggest lies.Look at Harry Potter. The books and movies started out kind of fun. They progressively got darker and darker. That is called desenitization. It is one of Satans biggest tools.A lady I know loved everything about Harry Potter. She was not a Christian. In fact she was very against God.She was disappointed in the Harry Potter books and movies at the end.She said they got darker and darker to the point it scared her.

I thought most all the harry potter movies were dark. By "dark" I mean the good vs evil. Harry was the good and the other one (I can't remember his name) was the dark evil one. Both of them used magic though. I am just trying to figure out what it supposed to do someone by watching it? Convert them to witchcraft?

She was against God and the last books scared her. Maybe that's not a bad thing. satan and evil exposed? Did she say?

The Hero in Harry Potter is a witch. It is different from many of the stories with witches and good vs.bad.You have your hero who will alot of times take over the witch. In Harry Potter the hero is a witch and that is not good.

She just said the movies and the books got too dark and evil for her.Now this lady is an atheist. So that says something about Harry Potter.I worked with the lady.I have counted about 40 times in a day she would take God's name in vain.

Does she not read the newspaper or watch the news. Real life, how people treat others in the world is what is evil and so dark to me. Story books like Harry Potter don't even come close to the real world.
How could she be an atheist and believe in evil forces? That's confusing.
So she had contempt for God and fear of satan. Just the opposite of a Christian. That's sad.

This lady always had an underlying sense of confusion for me.I felt a tiny bit of light in her.It is hard to explain but that was my feeling.

Are you seriously using Amish ideals as an example of what mainstream Christians are supposed to follow? The same Amish who won't drive cars or use electricity (among sooooo many other extremely legalistic ideas)? I guess that can't really be what you are saying, unless you are just saying it for the rest of us and don't believe in it yourself, since you are using electricity AND the internet to be on the forum here (which I'm pretty sure the Amish frown on). Maybe you could explain what you mean a little more?

not ideals, but Scriptural abiding. the Amish, Mennonites, Anabaptists, Hutterites and a few others are very long respected communities in the Biblical community(ies). Some, not many, make use of telephones, factories, vehicles and so on, with (hopefully) humbleness at the need to and with prayer and caution to remain in the middle of Yhwh's Will in their whole lives, not some of the time or part of their lives.
