This is in an outline format and the indents never come out right when I cut and paste from MS Word to whatever we have here. My apologies for the scrambles.

I. Jesus’ command at Matthew 28:18-19

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,

A. All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.
B. Go, therefore, and
1 make disciples of all the nations,
2 baptizing them
a in the name of the Father
b and (in the name ) of the Son
c and (in the name ) of the Holy Spirit,
3 teaching them to obey all things that I have commanded you;

II. Breaking down what Jesus said
A. “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me”
1. Jesus states that He is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings and that, in all of heaven and all of earth, there is no one (except the Father) who has more authority than Jesus.
a. He is the ultimate authority over all of creation.
b. Every king and emperor and general and everyone under them will
have to answer to Jesus.
c. what Jesus says, goes.

B “Therefore”
1. What does the word “therefore” mean?
I once heard Kenneth Copeland say;
“Whenever you see the word “therefore”,
stop and see what it is there for”

a. The word “therefore” connects what you just read with what you are
about to read
b. It’s like a stop sign telling you to stop and pay attention to what is
coming next.
c. What you are about to read is based on what you just read

2. In this case:
Because Jesus has ALL authority both in heaven AND on earth,
He has the authority to command the whole world

C. Jesus said “Go and (do some things)” He gave 3 commands to His disciples.

1st command: “Make disciples of all nations.”
a. There is no group of people, anywhere in the world, for whom Jesus did not die and rise again from the grave to indestructible life.
b. There is no group of people who God does not love.
c. There is no one from whom God withholds His grace for salvation.

2nd Command: “Baptize them in the name of the Father and (in the name) of the
Son and (in the name )of the Holy spirit.”

For a bit of historical perspective.

Everything we read in the Old Testament is about the relationship between God and Israel.
Everything we read in the New Testament is about that relationship being extended to Gentiles.

The New Testament is written from a 1st century, middle-eastern, Jewish Perspective.

It is important for us to realize that we automatically impose our 21st century, western, materialist, scientific, perspective and the nuances of the Modern English language, upon those very Jewish scriptures. We do that because that’s how we think: as 21st C., Western, materialist, scientific people.

By materialist I don’t mean focusing our lives of getting things (though some do)
I mean that we define reality by what we can see and touch and smell and taste and hear.

But, when you read these very 1st Century, pre-scientific, Middle Eastern, JEWISH scriptures,
You need to try to “turn off” that modern, western, mindset
And let the scriptures speak for themselves

For example:
From the Torah:
Numbers 6:22-27 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:
“The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” ’
So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”

** Note that the name “the LORD” is used three times in that blessing.

A. The priests of Moses’ time, who were Aaron and his sons,
used those exact words, that “formula” without deviation or substitution, or foreshortening,
to “put God’s name on the Children of Israel.”

1. By doing so they marked the children of Israel spiritually (or sacramentally) with the
Name of God.

2. By that blessing, the priests made a spiritual connection between God and Israel.
a. They were spiritually united.
b. And the word “Spiritually” means a “Spiritual reality.” – not a fairy tale

B. Where else do we see God’s name “put on” people?

Rev 14:1 Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father's name written on their foreheads.

C. God told the priesthood of Aaron and his sons to put the name of the Lord on the Israelites.
Jesus told His royal priesthood of believers to use the fully revealed name of the LORD in
Trinity in the baptism of believers

1. Therefore, (there’s that word again)
in the Baptism commanded by Jesus,
the One God in Trinity is revealed
as the name to “put on” believers.
A. That name is: The Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

2 And, just like the “formula” that Aaron and his sons were required to use had to be said exactly as it was given, so the New Testament priesthood of believers is to use the exact words which God the Logos, Who is incarnate as Christ Jesus, gave to His disciples.

<<<End of detour>>>

3rd command: Teach those new believers to obey everything I commanded you to
obey.
a. Jesus gave some commands
i. Go and make disciples of all nations
ii. Baptize them in the name of the F – S + HS
iii. Love: one another -/- your neighbor -/- your enemy (Mat 5:44)

III. Examples of Baptism in Water being normative in the book of Acts

A. Phillip on the road to Gaza: Acts 8:36-38 And as they went along the road they came
to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What is to prevent my being
baptized?"
And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he replied, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

B. Peter at the house of Cornelius Acts 10: 47-48 "Can any one forbid water
for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" And
he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

C. Jesus in the Jordan River Mark 1:9-10 It came to pass in those days that Jesus
came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.
