22 youth debutants under Guardiola

05/29/2012 15:40
The outgoing manager has givenfirst team opportunities to no fewer than 22 players in his four years at FC Barcelona

2012-05-26_FCB_B_-_UD_LAS_PALMAS_003.v1338291628.jpg

'Thanks Pep' / PHOTO: ÃLEX CAPARRÓS - FCB
The debutants in the ‘Pep Team’
2008/09: Busquets, Thiago, Xavi Torres, Muniesa, Botía and Abraham
2009/10: Fontàs, Dos Santos, Soriano, Gai Assulin and Bartra
2010/11: Oriol Romeu, Sergi Gómez, Miño, Nolito, Montoya and Sergi Roberto
2011/12: Cuenca, Deulofeu, Rafinha, Tello and Riverola
It is the dream of any of Barça’s youth players to finally get to play with the first team. They work for years to see that desire fulfilled, and under Pep Guardiola, more than the usual number of players have achievedsuch an illustrious target. Now that his time as manager is drawing to a close, Guardiola canfeel proud of helping no fewer than 22 players towards football at the very highest level.
At least five a season
Guardiola knew all about the potential in the FC Barcelona youth ranks after managing the B team for a year. Hence, in his very first season he used all of Sergio Busquets, Thiago, Xavi Torres, Muniesa, Botía and Abraham. In the 2009/10 season, Fontàs, Jonathan dos Santos, Soriano, Gai Assulin and Bartra joined the list, while in 2010/11 the debutants were Oriol Romeu, Sergi Gómez, Miño, Nolito, Montoya and Sergi Roberto. In his final season in charge, Guardiola selected all of Cuenca, Deulofeu, Rafinha, Tello and Sergi Roberto for official matches.
Four of those players are now part of the first team, namely Busquets, Thiago, Fontàs and Cuenca, while Bartra, Muniesa, Jonathan dos Santos and Montoya could be following them very soon. That’s without forgetting other players that have gone on to play for other professional teams: Oriol Romeu (Chelsea), Nolito (Benfica), Botía (Sporting de Gijón), Xavi Torres (Levante) and Jonathan Soriano (FC Red Bull Salzburg), among others.
‘Gràcies Pep’
The players know that one of the most important factors in makingthe grade is having a first team manager who is willing to use the B team as a source of new recruits. That is why in the last Barça B game of the season at the Miniestadi, the players expressed their gratitude to Guardiola for doing just that by wearing a shirt saying ‘Gràcies Pep’.

Epic meetings between Barça and Hamburg

05/30/2012 10:15
Hamburg and Barça played two epic games against each other half a century ago
The last time the two met was in 1977

Well before Bakero’s strike in Kaiserslautern (91/92) or Iniesta’sgoal at Stamford Bridge (08/09), there was another miraculous goal that kept Barça alive in the European Cup. It was scored by Sandor Kocsis against Hamburg – the team Barça are due to open their 2012-13 season against.
Kocsis miracle goal
The North German team now playat the modern Imtech Arena, but on April 26th 196, the 75,000 fanswho turned up to watch the second leg of the European Cup semi final, did so at the Volskparkstadion. Kubala’s Barça team had won the first leg 1-0, but Hamburg were 2-0 up in the return leg as the 90th minute came round, before a dramatic header from Kocsis meant a thirdgame would have to be played(the away goals rule had not yet been instigated).
A week later, that game took place in Brussels and an Evaristo goal put Barça through into whatturned into such a sad final in Bern.
Revenge for Hamburg
Hamburg got their revenge threeyears later in the last 16 of the old Cup Winners Cup. After a spectacular 4-4 draw at the CampNou (with goals from Pereda, Fusté -2- and Zaballa) the return game ended goalless and in the deciding game played in Lausanne, the German team won 3-2.
Two friendly wins for Hamburg in Germany
As well as those epic encounters, Barça have also played two friendlies in Germany, with Hamburg winning 3-2 in 1974 and 6-0 in 1977. Now, 32 years later, there will be another game between the two.

We have a name,

That everyone knows:

Barça, Barça, Barça!

Players,

Supporters,

Together we are strong;

And after many years of struggle,

And many goals we’ve cheered,

We’ve shown them all, we’ve shown them all,

That we can never be defeated:

Blue and scarlet in the wind,

Our cry is bold,

We have a name,

That everyone knows:

Barça, Barça, Barça![/size]

Psalm 23 - He Restores our Soul

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Psalm 37:7 - Patience

Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
