Just speaking from my personal experience, you probably won't be able to motivate him. No one was able to motivate me to lose weight until I absolutely wanted it for myself. Any time I would try for someone else's sake, I'd crash and burn within the month(or most likely week).
 
I've always struggled with weight and I am one of many in my large extended family. 2006 I lost my Dad, he had his second heart attack at 51 yrs and he didn't survive. It was a wake up call so I got active and aimed to lose 100lbs. I lost 70lbs, then I got married, got pregnant, gained 30 back. Then I was in an abusive marriage for 2 yrs, put on about 30 more (emotional eater) and I was constantly put down, so I lost respect for myself. I then was separated for a year, few months passed and my husband died in September. To make a long story short, I want to lose weight again.

I KNOW I can do it, I've done it before. But things are different now. I have a special needs little boy who is 3 years old and most my time revolves around him when I'm not working. I've been mentally psyching myself and praying to get in that mindset again, to try to figure something out. So far I've just changed my eating habits but I need to exercise. When I lost weight before, I hiked on our hilly 10 acres every day for about an hour and then I danced all nuts to loud music in my room for a half hour. Well, those things aren't easily done with my little boy. I've tried to include him on a hike but he doesn't last long because he's 3 and he always starts crying, then I have to carry him the rest of the way.

I went to the doctor a couple weeks after my husband died because I freaked out, being my son's only surviving parent. I got everything checked over. Despite being over weight, my blood pressure is good, my cholesterol is normal, and I'm not diabetic. That all may change if I don't do something. Lately I've been kicking myself for not taking advantage of this warm winter we've been having, but then I realize that hey, it's been only 5 months since my husband died. I'm still recovering.

So pray for me... I think there's still hope for me!
 
Of course there is still hope, lmw. Don't be hard on yourself. If you need time for recovery, then that's exactly what you should do... recover. I'm sure that it would be very difficult to manage the juggling act of dealing with emotional recovery, physical lifestyle change, and caring for a young'n. However when the time is right, I am sure that doors will open for you. You are meant to live life abundantly, and you will.

The gym I've been going to has two different sets of three hour periods when a nursery will open for a very minimal fee. I've seen a couple of moms in there taking advantage of that. Do you have that option? Check online or do some calling around, when, of course, you feel you're ready.

A new fitness center opened up in the parking lot of my clinic. It's quite expensive but I looked into it and they have a scholarship program. I think I'm going to apply for it; it's for lower income persons (me!) and if approved, there's a sliding fee schedule based on my monthly income. They include 2 hours a day of free child care for members. It's about a half hour from my house but living in the middle of no where everything is that far or further :) And your post reminded me of this and I just printed out the application form.

I meant to ask you, Reba, what sort of eating/exercise regimen did you follow to drop that weight? Curious. :)

I think it is called power walking about 3 miles most days..... I tend to do physical type work so i am active...oops that was then....not so active these days

My protein was fish mostly good ol tuna..... Veggies limited fruit....

except for watermelon ate watermelon at will :)

The food part was not the main thing the main thing was the Lord. I bake fun stuff and when temptation showed up i had a few verses in my heart/head... this one for sure

To Damascus' point, something has to click inside the person where s/he finally decide for themselves that the time has come. Until a person commits him/herself to a lasting change, any change will be short lived or not at all.

Kinda like trying to pound Jesus into someone who's not in the place he needs to be to surrender to the One Most High.
 
Hmm, I used to be chubby as a kid, but I thinned out during puberty. My youngest brother is quite obese, though. I've been trying to get him to exersize, but he's too lazy. How can I motivate him?

Take him to Camp Nou!

It's good to look athletic - if possible be a wiry figure. 'Has a lot of advantages: you can breathe well, no snoring at all, any seat can carry you, your vehicle won't consume exess petrol, perfect flight, opportunity at Camp Nou, you can comfortably walk on a roof etc

Disadvantage is that you can't stand even light wind

Even in my bad shape I've come to find that it's very easy to spend 2 hours in the gym, if you incorporate a little weight training in with the treadmill. So take advantage! :) I'm hoping and praying that they will work something out for you, that you'll be able to work out an affordable payment plan with them. Good luck.

That's a really good push, Reba. Three miles of power-walking. You must have been really committed, I can really feel the burn and the panting coming on after two miles of that on the treadmill. Our diets are also pretty similar, so I'm hoping for good results.

I think it's quite ridiculous that people act that way. I think, to avoid occasions of pride, I'll keep a wallet photo of me at my largest weight. I've never been the type of person to demean or insult someone for any reason, so it'd likely be a picture just for accountability's sake(don't want to go back there again).

And you're right. That switch has to be flipped, the light has to turn on, and you have to have that sudden moment of clarity and realization that you will no longer be this way, and do everything you can to change it. Until you desperately want it, nothing will happen. I believe that's why the strongest Christian conversions happen with the most broken and contrite of men.
 
Have any of you ever struggled with weight, or, do any of you actively pursue and maintain a healthy lifestyle? Ever lost a lot of weight? Are you trying to lose weight?

A couple of days ago I started a high protein, low carb diet, doctor ordered. Got a weekly Vit-B injection and daily phentermine regimen to assist me in my goal. I'm a big man and always have been, but lately it's been on my heart to change. God never intended for us to be slothful I don't believe, and it's now or never for me.

Anyone else on this road? Want to chime in with some advice or share your story?

I've been told I am too skinny. I try to keep my sugar and fat in moderation. I get plenty of protein and try to load up on complex carbohydrates (for energy).

I like wiry builds! Why bother about adding weight? Are you afraid of wind energy? Unless that:shrug

I'd say the most important thing when you're trying to lose weight is to get yourself a partner. It's amazing how much motivation you can give eachother. /my2cents

And you're right. That switch has to be flipped, the light has to turn on, and you have to have that sudden moment of clarity and realization that you will no longer be this way, and do everything you can to change it.

I had a friend who was quite overweight. Over a 4 week period he shed all of his excess baggage and became quite lanky. It was absolutely amazing, it's like he was a different person.

I had a friend who was quite overweight. Over a 4 week period he shed all of his excess baggage and became quite lanky. It was absolutely amazing, it's like he was a different person.

Be lanky - be athletic - a wiry figure!!!:lol

Going into week two. I've noticed a dramatic increase in stamina, ie: I don't sweat as much during my usual workout routine, nor am I as winded. Heart rate is 10-15 points lower during the workout session. Weighed in at 17 pounds less than when I started.

I really didn't think you could see such a difference in such a short time, but then again, I hear the bigger you are the quicker it falls off. I didn't believe it when my Uncle-in-Law lost 40+ lbs in a month, but now it appears to be very possible, and not even all that difficult to do.

Pushin' towards the goal.

I think the best way to lose weight is to eat healthier, increasing fruits and veggies and I think drinking more water makes a big difference. I recently found an app, called "Lose It". It is a free app and you log your food and exercise on it. I love walking and Pilates. I am not overweight but would like to lose 10 pounds. I lost alot of weight due to stress months ago, about 20 pounds and put it back on. But everyone was asking if I was sick. I have seen so many people succeed at losing weight but setting small goals for themselves. Good luck to you on your journey. Check out that app, they have a website too. :)
