There's a controversial parasite called Morgellon's Fibers. People that have it get sores and pains, and some believe it to be the cause of death in family. Unfortunately there are cases of doctors calling patients crazy for thinking their hair is moving. Here are some videos of the parasite extracted from clothing and stuff. We live in a world where people die because of unnecessary skepticism of the unknown.

Do not watch next video if bug guts make you squeamish:

Mayo Clinic is ok for surface level information, but not the best of sources. They don't mention that the "mysterious strings" are alive. (See videos of squirming "fibers") The article also explains attitudes towards it, in short "needs to be confirmed, seen as mental illness, and don't acknowledge".
I was just posting the common medical view not arguing for it. :)

I figured. I was just pointing out the vaguness of the info on the site leaves the reader off thinking it's paranoia or some sort of dermatological issue.

(I was saying Mayo Clinic is generally (in my opinion) not a good source).

I haven't looked at the other videos, but the ones in the first video are not alive. You can do this with any kind of very light, thin fiber. Air flow is causing them to move.

There is already some air flow in the room, but the lamp is probably causing significant additional rising air flow in its vicinity due to the heat it produces.

When the hand gets close, the fibers move toward the hand and then up because the body is also warmer than room temperature. Whenever the surrounding air is cooler than your body temperature (which is the usual case), you have a thin layer of upward moving air around your body. This is because your body warms the air and warm air rises. This sucks the fibers towards the body and then moves them up.
