Gen 49:30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace.
Gen 49:31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.

Gen 35:19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

Do you or anyone else see a significance in the fact that Rachel, the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, was not buried with Jacob and the others, but was buried along the road to Bethlehem, where the city of David would later stand?

I think that it is Rachel who is considered the mother of Israel, not Leah?
Mat 2:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
Mat 2:18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
Racheal morns because she mothered Benjamin one of the tribes of in Judea.

Day 144 Friday 9/12/14 Genesis 50:1-14 A Royal Funeral.

Joseph arranges for Jacob's body to be embalmed so that the deterioration of the body would be kept at bay until they reached Canaan. Joseph did not want to hear from anyone, "he stinketh!" :shame Somewhere I read that the only other Hebrew that was ever embalmed was Joseph.

Seventy days of mourning was Egypt's way of showing very high honor for the death of Joseph's father. Joseph seeks permission from his boss Pharaoh to bury his father in Canaan which meant that he would have to leave his job there in Egypt for the time it took to bury Jacob/Israel.

Because of the high esteem that Joseph was held at by the Egyptians, the funeral procession held a very large number of high officials and public figures of Egypt. There must have been Chariots in the lead, perhaps Joseph, wagons with Joseph's brothers, as well as other means of transportation. Certainly an impressive procession! The inhabitants of Atad had never seen such an event, they must have been dumbfounded :eek at the size of the funeral procession of so many officials of Egypt dressed in their official robes and head gear. The folk at Atad named the place Abel-mizraim which means, "The mourning of Egypt."

I thought you might be interested in the embalming process that the Egyptian physicians used. Compliments of e-Sword.

The physicians embalmed Israel. The method of preparing mummies in Ancient Egypt has been elaborately described, both by Herodotus (2.86) and Diodorus Sieulus (1.91), and, in the main, the accuracy of their descriptions has been confirmed by the evidence derived from the mummies themselves. According to the most expensive process, which cost one talent of silver, or about £250 sterling, the brain was first extracted through the nostrils by means of a crooked piece of iron, the skull being thoroughly cleansed of any remaining portions by rinsing with drugs; then, through an opening in the left side made with a sharp Ethiopian knife of agate or of flint, the viscera were removed, the abdomen being afterwards purified with palm wine and an infusion of aromatics; next, the disemboweled corpse was filled with every sort of spicery except frankincense, and the opening sewed up; after that the stuffed form was steeped for seventy days in natrum or subcarbonate of soda obtained from the Libyan desert, and sometimes in wax and tanning, bitumen also being employed in later times; and finally, on the expiration of that period, which was scrupulously observed, the body was washed, wrapped about with linen bandages, smeared over with gum, decorated with amulets, sometimes with a network of porcelain bugles, covered with a linen shroud, and, in due course, transferred to a mummy case. :janitor

Jesus didn't say things just to speak... there is something here... is it the difference between life in the spirit.... verses the law?
The men He was talking to well knew the story of Joseph burying his dad...

Mat 8:21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
Mat 8:22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Luk_20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

I not sure I understand. I have some things running around in my head but I can't pin them down. Will you explain a little more?

there is two ways to see that. either the righteous were in sheol and in the level for the tzaddik or gan eden(paradise).

Sorry Jason, you lost me.
sheol has a portion for those that are righteous according to some and other say it doesn't and all the righteous go to paradise. jews don't call the afterlife with the Heshem heaven in their Hebrew but gan eden. so its more common to see them say its paradise. jesus said that to the theif. today you will be with me in paradise. in that view the tree of life is there. the garden as well and the Heshem. now they do have some whacky views about the serpent and the gates of sheol that go there which of I don't agree, but its interesting to see a statement by jesus in revelation that says. to him that overcometh I shall place him in the garden with the tree of life with me. sheol is viewed as also a purgatory. Im unsure that prior to the cross if that was or wasn't there is a hint of the that in 1 Peter 3

Reba and Deb. I think it has more to do with the occasion and the time. The occasion of Joseph burying his father was promises made by God to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They were to be buried in the promised land. This was to be carried out by the surviving generations. The time of Jesus' statement was completely different. This was not because of fulfilling a promise, this was a case of following Jesus. Jesus is to be the Master Owner of our lives. When we love Jesus with all our heart, there is not room to carry out some whim of family. Does this help in some way?

Day 145 Saturday 9/13/14 Genesis 50:15-26 God Meant It For Good.

As we close the book on Genesis, again, Reba and I thank you all who participated in this wonderful Book of God! When we come back to the Old Testament after our study of Matthew, as per instructions of jasonc, we will study the Book of Exodus which is an extension of Genesis.

Joseph's brothers, once their father Jacob was buried, feared for their lives and concocted a story that their father had a dying request for Joseph to forgive their sins against him. As a psychologist, I have seen this mental deficiency in folk that I have counseled. The brothers had a long way to measure up to the spirituality of Joseph. As a result, their conscience would not let them forget about how badly they treated Joseph, therefore because they couldn't escape the gnawing guilt, they could not comprehend the fact that Joseph had already forgiven them and showered them with great compassion.

The forgiveness that Joseph gave to his sinful brothers is so much like Jesus' response to sinners in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. This is a great lesson for all of us. The next time someone sins against us, we should forgive them even before they ask for forgiveness, in that, we are in Christ Jesus and He in us. Always remember Galatians 2:20.

Gal 2:20 "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

The brothers were so afraid of Joseph opportunity to exact revenge on them because of their abuse, they sent a messenger, some say Benjamin, but there's no proof of that, instead of going themselves. When whoever brought the massage to Joseph, he must have really felt let down by his brothers lack of understanding of how much Joseph loved them because he wept.

In V.18 the brothers came and "fell down" before Joseph, fulfilling Joseph's dream. Once the dust settled and his brothers had presented themselves as Joseph's servants, further fulfilling his dream, Joseph makes this statement, "am I in the place of God?" In other words do you think I could change the plan of God? Do you think I would have done this plan differently? And then, he makes this famous and much used quote, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good."

God had a mighty plan to save "many people" from starvation, especially His young Nation of Israel which in time would produce the God Man Jesus Who would save His people from their sins.

Joseph was embalmed at his death at 110 years of age. He was placed in a coffin, and would wait there until Joshua (I think) would carry his body to Canaan.

Tomorrow's Study: Day 146 Sunday 9/14/14 Matthew 1:1-17 Jesus' Family Tree.
the book of the generation of Christ jesus. interesting I wonder luke got that from the oral record stored in the temple or from the accounts in the bible(both likely)

Hi Deb. I think it was you who asked a question about why Rachel was not buried on the family plot in Canaan. From what I understand, Rachel gave birth to Benjamin while Jacob and she were on the road, so to speak. She died giving birth. At that time in that wilderness, there was no way to preserve her body and needed to be buried as soon as possible. They were near to Bethlehem, so they buried her there. Actually, that's not a bad place to be buried. It's the birthplace of David and Jesus....I hope this helps.

Joseph's bones.

Jos 24:32 And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
