I guess, maybe you're running away from God, but He doesn't stop trying to draw you to Him? And when you finally accept Him back, that's when things take a turn for the better? Something like that.
I know there were times in my life when I wanted to give up on God, and during those times, knowing He was there was more of a torture than a comfort, because I knew I wasn't obeying Him.

I wonder if they are specifically talking about the conversion experience, or instead about the backsliding believer changing his or her ways? There is of course a Biblical distinction.
