I invite your views and thoughts , dear friends , on this intriguing parable the Lord spoke of in Luke 14: 16 -24. Question is what was the Lord trying to convey ? As always His words are like writing on the stone --- something which will hold good eternally. And therefore I seek your wise views to understand the Lord's parable . Many thanks in advance and many blessings to all.....Raj

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’
22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

Was Jesus opening the gates of heaven to (greatly) suffering humans and giving them a place in His kingdom? (Luke 14:21). The above parable appears to be similar to what Jesus taught in another parable about Lazarus and the Rich man in Luke 16:19–31, where the poor man Lazarus gets to enter heaven after suffering intensely here on earth.

For many are called ones, but few are chosen ones ”.
Matthew 22:14 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Matthew 22:14&version=DLNT

And having heard His parables, the chief priests and the Pharisees knew that He was speaking about them.
Matthew 21:45 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Matthew 21:45&version=DLNT

Which is the Messianic interpretation of what Isaiah prophecied in contrast to how the High Priests interpreted the prophecy.

And this shall happen: on that day, the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will not continue to lean on the one who struck it but will lean on Yahweh, the holy one of Israel, in truth. A remnant will return— the remnant of Jacob—to the mighty God. For though your people Israel was like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of it will return. Annihilation is determined, overflowing with righteousness. For the Lord Yahweh of hosts is about to make a complete destruction and a determined end in the midst of all the earth.
Isaiah 10:20-23 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Isaiah 10:20-23&version=LEB

And He did just that, with their destruction just a fews years after His parable.

the message of this for today is. he stands at the door of hearts knocking asking to come in.. many are saying not now i ahve more things to do. there will come a time he will no longer knock. but go and invite others

Actually there are two parables here. The first parable is of the ambitious guest who wanted the best seat in the room that others would see his greatness. Luke 14:11-14 gives us the meaning of the first parable of the ambitious guest as instead of being exalted he became humbled. Other words do not look down upon those who are less fortunate as you are, but help those who can not help themselves, Matthew 25:31-46.

The second parable is the parable of the great supper, Luke 14:15-24. This is about trying to make excuses before the Lord of why you were not prepared to be His Bride at His coming. Vs. 24 is what happens to those who are not prepared as they will not be caught up to Christ and spend eternity with Him when He returns.

Salvation is available to everyone who will believe, repent, and "take up his cross and follow".
Everyone is invited to the "wedding feast of the Lamb."
Everyone will be given a wedding garment; the robe of righteousness. Wear it.

Excuses, excuses to delay aren't we good at them. But God's timing is the right one. If we do not answer when called others will be chosen who answer that calling. God's calling is more important than what is going on in our lives. All are given the chance of eternal life.

Perhaps a bit like Noah's Ark?

Perhaps a bit like Noah's Ark?

Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. 7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

This is about those that were invited. I take it he means Israel. And those who were not invited, Gentiles.

Hosea refers to the Gentiles,
Romans 9:25
As indeed he says in Hose′a, “Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘my beloved.’”

So unlike the Jews, Gentiles are compelled into the church. Gentiles are caught like fish. So much for choice and freewill.

So everyone who is in the church today is there by force, not by choice. Like fish in a net, you can't escape.

But the net catches the good and the bad.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad. Mt. 13:47-48

Thank you for explaining this so well!

Most everyone here covered it but wanted to share this link - https://www.gotquestions.org/parable-great-banquet.html - with a great explanation of the parable.
I love the point the writer makes about how bad the excuses of the invited guests were - why wouldn't a recently married couple be able to attend a social event? who buys land without already knowing what it looks like or why couldn't they postpone seeing it?

John 1:11 - He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
