The pastor?

I was having a bible study with a lady this tuesday, we where in 1 Cor and reading the section of text that talks about Jesus being the head of man, and man the head of woman and God the head of Jesus.

Well, when we stoped to discuss this. She said "well our pastors are our spiritual covering" I was shocked really. First of all that verse does not say anything to that matter, and I am not sure the NT ever referes to a pastor as being such.

Seems to me that a Pastor is the same as elder, teacher or leader. But never is the pastor anything more then another brother. Not above or below the next guy or gal.

Lately as I have been revisiting the practices of the NT church, I have come to learn that the role pastors play are greatly out of sink with the church we read about in the NT.

What is the role of pastor? And is he our 'spiritual covering' and just what does that mean?

Thank you for your imput, brothers and sisters.

Actually, I don't know if that would be the proper term...
However.. the pastor is there both to guide and serve the congregation.
They are indeed our brethren... but in a teaching position.. and from
what i can recall... they do have some responsibility in the way of
guidance and prayer..

I will search it out for you later after I get some sleep..

I think you will find it listed under the office of bishop... or as you stated..
elder.

Henry,
  • I know you and I have disagreed on things before, but let me say that I applaud your efforts to be as the church Jesus wants.
With that said, let me say this; I did not vote because I took the question to mean only one pastor in the church. Pastor is synonomous with elder and bishop and in the NT scriptures we always find a plurality of elders or pastors.
  • Pastors or elders are the overseers of the church (Acts 20:17-28 and 1 Peter 5:1-3). This is how God decided His church would function. :biggrin Man has developed the "one pastor" system. :sad

You are right that in the NT we find a plurality of leaders, but these days we have one guy who all the others answer to. In the worste case we have the pope and in the lesser degrees we have pastors.

What I am getting at is that the NT form of leadership and what we typically find these days are certainly not one in the same. And we should work to bring those standards back.

Since I have been doing Home Church, I have really learned so much about the way things where done in the NT and man are we off base.

However, that does not mean that the essential doctrines are also compromised, I still believe that being a true Christian means that you adhere to the orhtodoxed, historical, and classic doctrines, including and especially the trinity.

If you like this idea, and the movement go to http://www.ntrf.org and read up on it some more, this is a really big move of God.

Pastor/elders are overseers of the flock.

It is their responsibility to lead the sheep to green pastures, and by still waters, not to stick their noses in the grass and the water to force them to eat and drink.

A shepherd (pastor/elder), also protects the flock from predators and eating contaminated food!

Read Psalm 23.

I am in full agreement that elder are susposed to protect the Church from false teachers, and wolves that would eat the soul.

However the not sure I would agree they lead us to green pastures that is what the Lord does, and they walk along with us.

An elder is wise man, who the brothers lean on for his wisdom, but the Church is governed by the consenesus to the brothers and not a group of elders.
