I had recently did a word study on the term "name", and I didn't really think to learn anything new, but it occurred to me that even if I learn one new thing, it's good. As it turned out, i was very much surprised to what's all in a name. We'll start with What Strongs had to say

Name (G3686)
(Onoma. ὄνομα ónoma, on'-om-ah; from a presumed derivative of the base of G1097 (compare G3685); a "name" (literally or figuratively) (authority, character):—called, (+ sur-)name(-d).../) (definition)

(name: univ. of proper names
the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.
persons reckoned up by name
the cause or reason named: on this account, because he suffers as a Christian, for this reason.../) (outline of usage) (Strongs)

So, a name is so much more than just a label to call you when it's time for supper. It speaks of authority and character (in the NAME of Jesus), which makes sense. And name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds...(Wow) So in other words, reputation, personality, desires...quite a bit more than just a label.

There used to be a saying, but it's meaning has been changed in modern times...(go) make a name for yourself. In other words, establish reputation. Establish honor, integrity and skill in something. Once when I asked a guy if so and so was trustworthy, he answered, his name is good. Meaning trustworthy.

Nowadays, make a name for yourself means to go get rich and famous, lol. That's all.

What do you think?

I think your spot on. A person can have many names. Each name can bring to mind something specific about them.

Jesus had many names but one that was used most often to identify authority. "The Christ". The disciples did not say, "in the name of God" or "in the name of Immanuel" or anything else.

I think that there is a reason for that. Sometimes it was "in the name of Jesus", "in the name of the Lord Jesus", and "in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ".

I think understanding why would be good. It would help to see what particular authority they are speaking about.

1 John 3:21 (ESV) 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;

1 John 3:22 (ESV) 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

1 John 3:23 (ESV) 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

I agree with all of the above. I had never thought of names having meaning until an officer explained the meaning of mine. Now, I do believe God can control anything in this world that He choose to control. From the age of twelve I desired to be a soldier and to protect it and it's -people. And then the Officer that life explained to me what Willis meant. He said that through a long process that he listed that both Wilhem and Willis, both pronounced with a v sound for the w are from the English name William and means a protector of the innocent.

I have come to understand that we have lost so very much of the truth of our grandfather's world.

This was real thought provoking for me. Since we're supposed to be walking in Christ, and to take authority over spirits and iniquities (in the name of Christ), then for us to do so is to be pleasing to God, as well as our Christian duty. You might say, we're to be walking in the authority of Christ and with the character of Christ.

...that thought immediately brought to mind various scriptures (which validates it)and left me feeling much encouraged.

I'd went through the meaning of names books before, and that was an eye-opener. But to word study out the term Name was a revelation indeed, lol.

I dunno if I can live up to my name at all, lol. Edward means "wealthy guardian", and the guardian part seems easy enough, but the wealthy part...I fall short of.

The way I understand it, it's about identity.
The book of Exodus starts out with, these are the names...
It doesn't matter what you go through, you never loose your true identity...
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob...

One thing I found was neat, is that GOD isn't a name at all. It's actually a title, and there are two of them. First is El, and second is Eloyhim. El is singular and Eloyhim is plural, but they denote the same entity. I'll spare you the details for now.

So, if GOD is a title, then what is God's name? He has many, and each describes one of his attributes. The most notable is Yahweh, or as the Germans preferred, Jahova. In the Hebrew, it is YHVH, or yud hey vod hey.

Interesting, because God tells Moses that Abraham knew him as God Almighty (the strong shepherd), but did not know him as YHVH.

Names in the Bible take on great meaning.... Abram to Abraham or Jacob to Israel being the two most promenent names, and YHVH is certainly no exception, for it is even found in I Am

What do you think?
My Dad always said that you name (reputation) was everything.
Do what you say and say what you do... because locks only keep the honest people out.

I'm trying to teach my kid that, and I don't know why it's taken me so long to share this with him. It's amazing how many things we know that we take for granted by assuming others know it... crazy huh?

If your in a crowded room, and you hear your name, you are instantly focused on it. Why? Maybe it's because we are so closely bound by our mame, it is a part of the very fabric of who we are.

If you and I are in a room together and If I say, "where is Edward", the answer is in your eyes.

My dad said the same thing. He said have some integrity and walk with honor. Be careful who you hang out with because if they're punks, then you'll be a punk. He said you have to be careful because you can blow it in an instant. When you blow it, you usually get a label...and labels stick for a loooooooong time.

Don't laugh but mine means perfect, lol. A goddess
Latin that is.
In Prov.22:1
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Ecc.7:1
A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

Good reputation, trustworthy, a man of his word...
