I got certified in college. Yep, it meet my requirement for one elective course in FL for an engineering BA. Back 30 years ago tuition was relatively cheap too.

I took some advanced certs through a dive club within the military, pretty cheap too. Basically they just charge for the books and the PADI fees.

Used equipment (Craigslist, ebay and even the internet dealers) isn’t that expensive. Lots of people buy a complete package then find they don’t really like it. Send any used regulators in for annual service ($50) and they’ll go through it pretty well. Rent tanks till you find it more convenient to have your own. Or even rent it all if you only dive a couple times a year.

Anyway, I’d check local dive clubs (not dive shops) for basic recreational classes, then a local college if a club isn’t an option. Some go to Mexico on vacation to get certified fairly cheap.

P.s. make at least 50 dives and be very comfortable diving before you actually start spearfishing.

Plus, with spearfishing, your in saltwater diving off a boat (versus calm freshwater). I.e. more things to worry about. Not to mention the tax man (sharks).
I live near two or more dive schools, scuba stores.
one such place bought a home . merely to use its pool to teach the basics and also uses a wreck that is really close to the shore(sandbar sank it ) and it was partially submerged until the mid 70's then by the mid 80s nearly underwater at high tide. the boiler was visible during lowtide fully.

Well since we went there...

Local historical research, photography of homes, places I find ,or know that are old and look into .ww2 stuff being my favorite.
even today, a mistery. this map is off or the info given on Okeechobee/Osceola are off. im looking for that Stanwood , no record of it so far. I have driven all that on the barrier island. if it was there, surely the older folks would know and tell. some do recall what is listed as the narrows, I have been to that island. its a bunch of mansions. the only remaining home that was there is on a county park to the north as it was made of cedar wood that was locally and used as an office by fred teurk to sell the community john's island. he restored it and added utilities to it and kept that florida look. others were there but were either to far gone or simply used as offices too for the companies and then razed. that was all in the 70;s and 80;s nearly hundred years after their construction, they were left to become a ghost town in the 20s due to the muck problem of the soil rendering farming impossible.http://fcit.usf.edu/florida/maps/pages/1300/f1397/f1397.htm

Okeechobee County is Florida's 54th county, established on May 8, 1917, from segments of Osceola County and Brevard County. It gains its name from the Hitchiti Indian words for "big water" (oki meaning water and chobi meaning big). Okeechobee, originally called Tantie after Tantie Huckabee, a Carolina schoolteacher who moved to this area and promoted learning, is the county seat.

For earlier maps of this area, visit the Osceola County and Brevard County map galleries.

tantie there lived and taught school on that island I mention, its called gem island then and still is. also called by the state its family name barker island, descendants of them I do know. one from church and another who works where I do.

I'm not to much into sports, but hubby loves his Pittsburgh Steelers. I keep telling him no matter how loud he yells at the TV they can not hear him :angry3

In the summer I do enjoy riding the ATV's and canoeing. In the winter I'm a recluse and stay indoors.
You should look up "Pittsburgh Dad" on YouTube. Some episodes are funnier than others, but I bet you both see your hubby in the parody, which is pretty spot-on

It could be a sport you actually participate in
or something you like to watch and enjoy.

I can't think of a sport I enjoy watching...
But my favorite sport is riding a bike.

It's so easy to go fast and move along.
The wind feels nice on my face and hair.
It's a feeling of freedom for me.

This is a good place. No traffic at all.

I ski. Would love to explore the Italian Alps! I'm sure I'll never get the chance.

I just spent 3 days hiking an extinct volcano that is my favorite ski hill. I had never seen it not covered in snow before, and now have a much better idea of where to go, and where to stay off of

MtBohemia.com

I used to sail a lot as a kid. Rarely do I get the chance to do that, but I might get a kite to ski behind when our lakes freeze over. NASA developed ways of slowing down their craft returning to Earth that are really useful for the purpose (NPW, NASA power wing) People use these with buggies on deserts and even skateboards, and of course with stand up paddle boards on water.

I enjoy spearfishing the most. It far exceeds any other sport I have tried. No matter how hard I try, or what I add to them, I just cannot get footballs or baseballs to taste nearly as good as the fish. Quail hunting is next on my list but the spear shafts take to long to reload to sport more than one per covey.
:lol

I like the shooting sports. Any of them. They're hardly ever televised but I used to watch them sometimes. I don't have cable anyway.

I never did really get into watching any of the traditional sports. I watched the Harlem Globetrotters play a real a real game before and they just drove the other team nuts, lol.

Of all the sports in which I participated I think tennis was my favorite. Played it mostly in high school (varsity tennis team) and college (just for fun) as well as with my children when they were teenagers. I still love to watch a good match but haven't played for over 30 years since a shoulder problem. After than I mostly did running..10ks in races. Now I love watching some college teams play football and, of course, I am a consistent Seahawks fan. And Zags Men's basketball as well.

My daughter in law, about 43, is a runner. She's participated in the NY Marathon twice. She runs 13 miles on a regular basis but runs all the time, at least twice a week. I believe this makes a very strong heart -- and legs and everything else.

I believe the amount of activity we do as young people will have an impact on how agile, pliable, we are as older persons.

While I'm not against marathon, iron man training, you simply don't need to be that much of a long distance runner.I lost weight by walking miles,I put a 100 miles a week on my shoes.heart health is achieved in ma NY ways without joint destruction.

Yes. A good point.
