I was given one for my wife so she could talk face to face with all the family members.
They came over with the new phone, pay cards to cover a whole year with unlimited text messages, showed us basically how it worked, made a few changes to make it easier for us, and left back home up north.

So me and my wife are sitting here with a phone that costs over $200.00, and pay cards that come to several hundred dollars.
And we have no idea what to do.
So on line is a 39 minute tutorturial to walk you through it step by step.
But because my step son by passed several steps to make it easier for us, I am unable to follow the online tutorturial.

So I just charged up the phone.
2 messages plus old messages.
How do I erase them and start over?
No idea.
How do I speak to the phone and have it follow my commands?
Did he put my fingerprints into it for identification.
I can't get in touch with him.
If I could, he's a real nice guy but not a good teacher.

I don't even know if I could make a phone call of any kind with this thing.
I'm suppose to have the internet on it.
They supposedly took care of that for me.
But none of it is for me.
It's for my wife.
And furthermore, neither one of us know what the phone number is or how to look it up.

Does someone have a simple answer?
We are ready to give it back and say thanks, but no thanks.
We may hurt their feelings doing that.

Give it back, and explain that you’re too old to learn new electronics. Being younger your stepson has probably been suspect anyhow, and being nice as you say, he will quietly laugh behind your back instead of falling over hysterically in front of you.

If he would insist on you taking it, you could do what I did to a Dish network salesman in Costco the other day. I said NO, and the next thing you’ll want me to do is get one of those girly cell phones. (You do realize that women just have to talk all the time). He sort of backed off for a moment sort of surprised before stating that he had a cell phone. I looked at him knowingly and asked if he wore socks. Nuff said?

Oh I forgot, your wife is a girl, and if she's anything like mine she can't even change a car tire, and doesn't want to learn. :shame

Thank you for your advice.
We have one granddaughter who wants to give it a crack with my wife.
I know it will fail and then we will give it back.

No such thing as being too old to learn...anything.

In the "Messages" app, you should see "Edit" in the top left corner. Press that and you should see a bunch of circles show up next to each person who has messaged. Select the circle for each conversation you want to delete and "Delete" will highlight (become active) in the bottom right. Hit delete and it will delete all the selected messages.

How do I speak to the phone and have it follow my commands?
Hold down the "Home" button--the main button on the front of the phone. After a few seconds Siri will startup--black screen with a white line close to the bottom--and you can ask whatever you want.

Did he put my fingerprints into it for identification.
Under the "Settings" app, scroll down and select "Touch ID & Passcode". It will ask for your passcode (the one you use to unlock the phone). Once inside, you can add or delete fingerprints. I've got four going in case I lose one or three. Thumb and index finger are good.

I don't even know if I could make a phone call of any kind with this thing.
Select the "Phone" app, which is always at the bottom of the screens. If you have contacts in your "Contacts" app, select that, or if you just want to dial, select "Keypad" and just dial. You can also redial anyone you have called by selecting "Recents".

I'm suppose to have the internet on it.
They supposedly took care of that for me.
If you are connected to the Internet, or rather to a wi-fi network, it will show at the top of the screen, left of centre--a dot with two arcs above it, which show signal strength.

And furthermore, neither one of us know what the phone number is or how to look it up.
Again, under the "Settings" app, scroll down and select "Phone". Right at the top it will show your phone number--"My Number".

Hopefully that is simple enough. You should be able to ask nearly anything in Google and find some links to show you how to go about things.

Thank you free, some of the things you said worked.
I will work on the others and see if I can make them work.

touch id and password does not show up on my settings and the phone does not respond to my voice
I'll leave some of this for when the kids call.

Hmm...if it's an iPhone 5 it should have the "Touch ID & Passcode" setting; it was the first with that feature. If you go into the "Settings" app, scroll down a little bit and select "General" then "About," there is a field where it gives the "Model" number. If you Google "iPhone model number [your model number--no brackets, of course]", you will be able to verify which model of iPhone.

I can't even find setting anymore, but I found my phone number

If you found your phone number, you are in the Settings app. There should always be a "<" in the top left which is to go back to the previous screen. If in doubt, press the "Home" button and it will return you to the main screen. From there you should see the Settings app.

Don't be too afraid to click around. There really isn't much you can do to harm the phone, apart from reformatting it, which you have to do purposely and will receive a warning.

Is this the first smartphone you've had? Nothing wrong with that if that is the case, I'm just curious as it can be quite overwhelming the first time. But just get used to clicking in and out of apps, and shutting them down (double-click, scroll left or right to the app you want to shut down, and then swipe up on that app). If you don't actually shut them down, they remain open in the background. This is okay for things like the Phone or Mail apps, but for things like Safari or Facebook, it will eat up your power and possibly your data (depending on other settings).

For photos, use your cable and plug into a computer. What happens depends on whether you use a PC or Mac. A Mac should automatically open up an app which will allow you to view and import whichever photos you choose. I'm not too Mac savvy but my wife does have a couple for her business and I know the MacBook opens up an app automatically.

On a PC, open up Windows Explorer and the iPhone should appear on the left. Click on that and it should bring up "Internal Storage." Under that is the folder "DCIM," which will have one or more folders under that--mine has (100APPLE and 101APPLE). Photos and videos are in those folders and you can copy-and-paste or cut-and-paste them to your computer, or delete them.

On the iPhone, under the Camera app, you can also view and delete things, one-at-a-time. With the app open, the square in the bottom left shows you a preview of the last photo or video you took. Click that square to open up and review all photos and videos. There are a few settings, one of which is delete and another lets you manipulate things (which I have never played with).

Anyway, I need to get going and will likely be gone for most of the evening. I'll check in when I can but Google is your friend. Just enter "how do I" and then whatever you want to know, followed by "for the iPhone 5." I'm sure you know that but just in case.

Oh, and I just about forgot, the back of the iPhone should have the model number etched on it (I always forget because I have a case). Google that to find out if it is an iPhone 5. If it is, you should be able to find the Touch ID setting.

Do Apple stores do that for those who don't have AppleCare?

Allen Wynne Are these the tutorials you were using: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/explore/new-to-iphone ?

The user guide link is at the bottom of that page: http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/
