Why do some people insist on being a perfectionist?

Well, Dave, you make it sound like such a bad thing.

I am a perfectionist. I like to have most everything right, all the time. I'm fanatical about spelling and punctuation, organization, and a whole host of other things. I can't help it, it's who I am. I will say, however, that if my house isn't clean, I can live with that.

There's nothing wrong with being a perfectionist. It's the perfectionists who get really angry and stressed out when everything isn't perfect who have a problem.

I don't do that, but I do have a problem delegating tasks because I'm afraid things won't get done to my standards.

I am talking about those who go over the top. I mean, does it matter if the spice bottle is a milimteter off to the right? I also like to have things neat and in order, but I don't take it to the neat freak extreme. I just cannot stand it when people are so nit picky, they find something wrong about everything. :lol

I am so the same way! I would love to have my kids do the dishes, for instance. But I have a system of getting it done right and I'd rather just stick with my system then let the kids do it and have crusty dishes!

Now, Dave, I don't have my spices in order. They are all crammed in the cabinet in no particular order. My mom, on the other hand, is very nit-picky with her spices and other things. Once my kids were playing with her refrigerator magnets and she actually came in the kitchen and got onto them and then put them back in their litle places. :screwloose

There is nothing wrong with desiring or seeking perfection since God commands us to be holy. However, there's a line between seeking perfection and treating others with disdain as though one thinks he/she is perfect. I've been on the receiving end of criticism from a perfectionist and "Pharisee" more than once. In fact, I used to be one of them until God taught me otherwise.

Well, for some people it has to do more with OCD thinking than thinking they're perfect, I think. Ya think?

.

Dave, something to think about....

Are perfectionists also people who think others should not do something so perfectionistically?

Heather, you sound just like me :yes I think some people are just wired that way, and some aren't. It can be a really good thing in some situations, but sometimes it drives me crazy that I think some things are important. I am learning when to just let some things go if they aren't perfect because, honestly, it's really tiring sometimes :crazy

I am not a perfectionist, but I think there is a down side to being too laid back too. I guess it all boils down to doing all things for the glory of God. We just have to deny ourselves in either case.

I think if it makes them happy then its fine for people to be perfectionists (even freakishly) just so long as they don't expect others to do likewise or look down on those who don't.

I'd say I'm a perfectionist. I like to have things done in a specific way, and have everything neat etc. Except my room! Which could be a little strange...I wouldn't say that I'm freakishly perfectionist.

I love when I learn that someone else is a perfectionist, because I think "Yes! they've got their lives in some kind of order!".
