Joseph was the firstborn of Rachel. Jesus was the firstborn of Mary. :wink
Mat 2:18 `A voice in Ramah was heard--lamentation and weeping and much mourning--Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted because they are not.'
The point was that Joseph was not the firstborn of Jacob (Rueben was), whereas Christ is the "firstborn of every creature" (Col 1:15), the firstborn of Mary (Mt 1:25) (who was the one and only wife of Joseph) and the only begotten Son of the Father (Heb 1:5). The point is to not put too fine a point on types and shadows, and Mt 2:18 would not be relevant at all.

In what sense was Joseph a type of Christ?
Joseph was beloved of his father, sent unto his brethren, brought revelations from God, rejected by his brethen, sold by his brethren, unjustly accused and condemned by his enemies, imprisoned (entombment for Christ), brought out of prison (resurrection for Christ), exalted and placed beside the king in power and authority, obtained a Gentile bride, dispensed bread to the famished, the Gentiles requested grace in his sight, and he was proclaimed as the savior of Egypt (the world). Going much beyond this would be counterproductive.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as they do not contradict Scripture and are consistent with new covenant truths, they are LEGITIMATE interpretations. If one chooses to be too governed by rules, then the Scriptures will not open up to you beyond human intelligence. That's all I'm going to say.

I believe this might be taking these dreams beyond their intended purpose. And let's not forget that the chief butler forgot Joseph, even though Joseph entreated him to do so. Sounds like an ungrateful wretch.

Joseph is clearly a type of Christ, but as in all types, we must not take them beyond a legitimate interpretation. For example, Joseph was not the firstborn of Jacob, but Christ was the firstborn of Mary.

Hebrews 7:10
For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

Matthew 1:2
Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethern

Matthew 2.16
Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Matthew 2:18
In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

And his brethren of Matthew 1:2
I do not do endless genealogy well, but there is a huge tie when you get into all this. Folks smarter than me will have to sort through all this.

Here’s another snapshot of Christ and His finished work:

Luke 15:23–24
And bring the fatted calf here and kill it [PUT AN END TO ANIMAL SACRIFICES, CHRIST IS THE END OF THE LAW], and let us eat and be merry [NO MORE LEGALISM AND THE HEAVY YOKE OF RELIGION, REJOICE BECAUSE…]; for this my son [JESUS] was dead [CRUCIFIED TO DEATH] and is alive again [RESURRECTION/CONQUERED THE GRAVE]; he [JESUS] was lost [THEY COULDN’T FIND HIM IN THE STONY TOMB] and is found [FOUND ALIVE OUTSIDE THE STONY TOMB]. And they began to be merry.
I wish (in love) to suggest this:
Gentiles went astray early in history. With the gentile exclusion they were away from the father till Peter had the Acts 10 revelation dream and preached to Gentiles. The Gentiles were accepted of the father just like the Jews.

The Jews (the circumcism party) talked of the sin of the Gentiles. As the other son criticized the wasteful son.

In fact the father had two sons he was concerned about. One was offered grace because of his return. The other was warned to accept his brother. Jesus broke down the wall seperating Jew and Gentile. He has both as one new man Ephesians 2 area. Gentiles were taught of Jewish spiritual works (explained as gifts).

The law can still be used lawfully today. We get our righteousness from the work of Christ Jesus.

Our foundation of faith rests in all God has done in the past and is doing now in his kingdom.

I am usually in agony using symbolism. Symbolism is important, but not active in some. Not everyone speaks in tongues. So it is with all spiritual gifts. We have to seek unity as much as possible.

Our conservations can bring unity.

It is so hard to address issues.

He was rejected by his brethren, beaten, spat on and meant for dead, sold for the price of a slave, but in the end he became their savior....

Type/antitype relationships are only counterproductive when they are forced, or somehow contradict the gospel message. A correct context can help to define the boundaries of the relationship. Similarities can be explored, but eventually they always break down when taken to extremes because the type is not actually the antitype. Joseph, as a type for Jesus, gave Israel a prophetic preview of what their promised Messiah would do for them, us, and the rest of the world.

Isaiah 19:25
Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.

Egypt, especially, will ultimately benefit from Joseph. Not everything will be wonderful, but spiritually it will work for good.
