Will the generation that saw Israel re-formed as a nation...

what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age
And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?
And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
His discourse concerns the end of the age, which occurs at His Coming.
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
... All these are the beginning of sorrows.
The progression of the time-line continues as He gives more signs leading up to The Sign.
Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
...But he who endures to the end will be saved.
Jesus is still giving signs that are progressing along His time-line towards the end of the age, which culminates with His return.
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. 15 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
This brings us up to 3 1/2 years before His return and specifically points us to Daniel for more confirmation.
32 "Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near--at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.
Jesus described clearly for us the "things" [plural] that would mark the time-line up to the end of the age and His return.
The things are the signs He mentioned.

Yes He does...
Mat 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Mat 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
A time when it is possible to erase all life off of this planet. Ntoice it says NO FLESH, not just those living in Judea or Palestine or the Middle East, it says there would be NO FLESH saved. (James Moffat has it "no flesh saved alive"). This became possible in the early to mid 1950's, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union had enough weaponry to kill all life off the planet several times over. Nuclear winter and other results of an all out exchange aren't talked about much these days, but having grown up under the shadow of the mushroom cloud, I know that it affected me.
Another point here is that the tribulation would be the worst ever. The tribulation of 70AD was not as devastating as the Simon BarKochba revolt and not nearly as devastating as the pograms of Hitler and Stalin in WWII.
So what generation is this? One that either is extant now or will be in the future.

By what are you measuring the level of devastation?
Body Count?
If 100 people are killed instantly in an explosion and 10 people are slowly tortured to death over a course of two weeks, which group do you suppose suffered greater tribulation in their death?
Body count hardly determines the level of tribulation.
How many mothers found the "tribulation" of the Simon BarKochba revolt or the programs of Hitler and Stalin in WWII so "GREAT" that they slaughtered, cooked and ate their own babies?
So are you telling me the death camps of Hitler and Stalin were really not that bad? That the "Final Solution" was not really all that terrible compared to the 1.1 million that died in 70 AD. The estimates are 6 million of the 9 million Jews in Europe were killed by various horrible means. This does not touch upon the approximately 20 Jews million that Stalin murdered. How do you measure it? Somewhere around 26 million Jews lost their lives by Hitler and Stalin and that is not worse than 1.1 million in Jerusalem? People who had their skin stripped off of them to make lampshades? Gassed, starved, worked to death, had experimental surgeries without the aid of anesthetics or medications? High altitude experiments, freezing, high temperatures, every conceivable brutality was perpetrated on them.
