Windows 10...to upgrade or to not Upgrade...discuss

I'm much more into smart phone technology than pc tech, but it's nice to have the latest OS on my laptop and be done with 8.

We purchased a Dell laptop for our daughter for college and it arrived on Thursday last week. It came with Windows 8.1 but also offered the upgrade to 10. I only used the 8.1 for about 20 minutes and already had so many negative feelings about it I gladly upgraded to Windows 10. I have been happy with my choice so far. Windows 10 seems like a blend of 7 and 8 and in my opinion it is much more user-friendly. It's too bad I was unable to get that old mini laptop upgraded.

That's a good way of describing my initial impression of 10.

I'm not one to get all up in arms about the perceived privacy sacrifices whether it's MS or Google. The benefits I receive from my agreements with them outweigh the negatives, IMO. It's all an aggregate anyway. I suppose I understand why some people get worked up about it. I just don't.

I also loved it but it took all night and into the morning and just fell into hyperspace on both machines. It needs stability before I go there again.

One thing about Windows is that it can't handle power interruptions. Microsoft recommends an uninterruptible power supply.

My Windows 7 build went haywire twice, after local power failures. The first time I was able to fix it by running the system file checker. The second time I had to reinstall the whole Windows 7 to fix it.

Don't know if that's what happened, but its something to keep in mind.

There were two power interruptions that morning, sounds like the answer. Don't we all wish Linux was that fragile? WE DO NOT!
 
I do wish they would fix that.

Windows 10 does have additional repair tools compared to 7. DISM for example. Still, its probably a good idea to back up the computer on an external USB hard drive, or some such.
 
I went into task scheduler, and it was set to automatically update Windows and Defender only one time, today at 5. The reason Defender said it was out of date. Maybe because Windows 10 is newly installed. If they don't reset it to auto update regularly, I will probably schedule an auto update myself. I know better than to depend on my memory to manually update it.

I did find a nifty new feature called server initiated healing. It is scheduled to check Windows 10 every day for errors, and attempt to repair them using Microsoft's on-line data base.

Windows 10 has some interesting features.

I could not sleep last night and went for 10 again, this time through the site. I did get it to make me a 64bit version Install Disk but when I went for the site to install 10, it wiped out 8.1 but no 10. I may try the disk install today. This thing came out of development before it was ready, as MS 9is famous for doing, and now the public, without notice is beta testing the mess.

The first thing I did Sunday was to use my HP Disks and reinstall a fresh install of 8.1. then I spent from 3am until 8am forcing the updates. It should be good for the upgrade. the only thing I did not upgrade is the one thing I upgraded after the first install and that will be my AMD 8330 HD Video Driver. I might upgrade the driver from the AMD site and try it again.

When I click on the icon in the system tray, it still says I'll be notified when it's made available for my computer. I imagine if I contacted Microsoft, they'd say it's a Gateway problem, and Gateway would put it on Microsoft.

Is anyone else still waiting?

But there's no hurry. "Mainstream Support" of Win7 ended Jan 2015. But "Extended Support" is not scheduled to end until 2020.

End of "mainstream support" is MS scare talk but all it means is be sure to get their latest Service Pack install before that date. No big deal.

When I want (probably before I go back to school and with enough time to diagnose the glitches) I'll first download to a 4 Gig USB Flash Drive (they're cheap these days) and not direct to my HD.
Much easier install or so I've heard.

I was still up at four his morning and decided to make another run at windoze 10. I spent a couple of hours forcing updates from MS and HP but this time the download was only forty-five minutes and from install through driver updates I was just under two hours setting it up on my HP SlimLine. It looks like I'll need to do a fresh install on my Lenovo T400 because I am still unable to boot windoze on that machine.
 
Well it only took me an hour to upgrade and so far the only thing that didn't work was my Norton A/V that did not have a patch for Windows 10. It is supplied by my ISP but is Norton. Apparently they didn't think my ISP needed to be prioritized. Anyway the only think I don't like is the lock screen that I can't disable in the Home version I upgraded to. Looking for a work around to it.
