I don't think you'll be able to get rid of it.

I've been using Windows 10 for months on four separate computers and find nothing wrong with it.

Simple, Reba. Like I always say, dump the Microsoft. No, I won't tell you to get Linux if that's too intimidating. I'll recommend another Linux-based OS and that's Google Chrome. If you want to do simple things like you said, a chrome book or a chrome box (plus a cheap monitor, keyboard and mouse) is all you need. Both run about $100+ to $200+ dollars. No viruses, no slow-ups, no de-fragging, no compatibility issues. You only need one thing: a gmail account and you get free online storage and email. Unless one is practicing to be a saint or monk with endless patience, I don't know why anyone would want to put up with Microsoft to do the stuff you do with all the abusive issues that OS puts people through. Microsoft is so...... yesteryear! In fact, if everyone here would use Linux, Mac OS's, google chrome or Android, and dump the Microsoft immediately, I guarantee you this forum would be practically closed tomorrow because that's all I ever see on this: Microsoft problems. This is why once in awhile I try to introduce other topics such as the Fibonacci clock thread I started in order to get a breather and with no complaints.

Raspberry Pi 3 is the bomb for that sort of thing.
You can even run it on your tv.

$30 and all is over.
What? Five dollar mouse and ten dollar keyboard too?

Oh gosh let me break my piggy.

I have windows 8.1.
It came with the computer.
They gave me windows 10 for free, I put in on and then things started to go wrong.
I took it off and put windows 8.1 back and everything has been fine since.

tim-from-pa, I think i have an old computer that still works ... .. if i can get over being 'chicken-little' i just might try loading lin-ux....

Google Chrome has an OS? i use them as a browser? i am confused but you know that ..

Reba,
My HP and my Lenovo T400 Lap Top both crashed under Windows Ten, the HP Desk Top crashed under three trials. Please, if you don't know how to burn a Dvd into a startup Disc, get one of the people close to you to download a copy of the latest release of Linux Mint and tell them to get the copy with the Cinnamon Desk Top to make the transition from Windoze to Linux almost painless. Cinnamon handles much like windoze but without the crashes, blue screens of death and without the worms, trojans nor the viruses. And if you do not like it, have someone burn a back up disc before you install the Mint and you can go back if you wish.

But with Mint and the Cinnamon Desk Top the learning curve is almost flat.

Oh, and if your computer is new within the last five years, have them download the 64bit version and write it to a cheap 4 to 8 gig Flash Drive. Then you plug the Flash Drive into a USB port and boot the machine from it and you can test to see if you can deal with it without harming your windows installation. I just purchased five eight gig flash drives on ebay for 12 dollars. They are very handy and they are cheap.

Reba!

I would just stick with Windows 10. I have not had any problems with it. It does take a little getting used, but then what OS doesn't have a learning curve? If your computer originally came with Windows 8, 8.1, or 7 it should be able to handle 10 just fine.

I have no doubt that what you say here is ninety percent true but my case just screams, "Not always true." My Lenovo T400 came with seven and my HP Slim Line was loaded with eight point one and multiple trials failed on both machines.

Add in the lost work that was almost completed and you have a formula that equals rage.

Linux mint with the 64bit cinnamon is free.

Advertising pays for all of it as an operating system on your computer...and no not ads on your computer.

I'm going to put it on a raspberry pi tonight.

See what happens.

Please understand what John has said here, there are no ads and no ad pop ups that are in your Mint Operating System. You will want one of the free Pop Up Blockers for the browser you choose to use.

I hope this test works well, I don't have a Raspberry to test it on and will be wanting to know the result.

Isn't online storage (like the Cloud?) more susceptible to hackers?
I have Windows 8 and it's okay. Looks more like an iPad and the change from Vista or 7 is too dramatic, but you get used to it.
However, I also keep getting notices to upgrade to W 10. It does make me wonder why.
Could we go back to 3.1?? It was nice. I had full control of everything. It was slow though and couldn't handle sound well, so forget about going back!!
What about the hacker possibility?

Wondering
