Hi.
I was trying to figure something I read in part of an in depth study of the gospel of Luke.
He was talking about the boy with the demon who went into epileptic like fits, and Jesus tells the disciples they could not drive it out because of their lack of faith, and because that form can only come out by prayer and fasting. I always didn't understand why Jesus said both, since supposedly it was only the last explanation that should have been the correct one.
Well, according to this teacher, these two answers are related. He said:
'The disciples suffer, as Jesus said, from unbelief, from lack of faith. The manifestation of this is their lack of prayer. And the result is a lack of power.'
So how exactly do you explain this connection?

In order to facilitate this discussion, can you please cite the scripture with the account you're referencing and also scripture to support your position above?

Thank you.

Luke 9:37-43
The teacher of the study will bring other gospels accounts of the same story to get a more complete story.
Matthew 9:19-21 says 'But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.'
Mark says only 'by prayer' 9:29

Your reference to Luke 9 doesn't speak about prayer or fasting. It explains how Jesus expelled the demon.

Your reference to Matthew 9 also says nothing about prayer or fasting but explains how Jesus healed the woman.

Your reference to Mark 9 does in fact state both prayer and fasting.

I'm not understanding how you're trying to link these together.

How about Mat 17:21 “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” and we let Winnie ask a question?

LOL. Sorry about that. I was looking at my 'lesson' which I printed out and had the scripture reference right, but I don't know how I ended up typing that scripture. :cool2

Well, anyway, now that my question is clarified along with the scriptures, I am still asking about it. :yes

There is a "law of attraction" principle in operation in these matters.

The law of attraction is found in Mark 4:15. The disciples could not do what Jesus did, nor can they by merely praying and fasting. Though I've seen more than a few people almost kill themselves trying. It never works out by "mechanics only," of prayer and fasting:

Luke 11:20
But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

I was wondering about the connection between a lack of faith manifesting itself by lack of prayer and so the outcome lack of power to drive the demon out of the boy. Now, as I type it, I can see what that means.

There's an old bromide: "Much prayer: much power. Little prayer: little power."
Fasting assists prayer in that, eating a big meal is more likely to cause you to fall asleep than to energize your prayer.
