Scientists have begun to trace the link between portion sizes and increased obesity in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 1971 and 2000 American women increased the number of calories they consumed by 22 percent (from 1,542 to 1,877 per day), while men increased their intake by 7 percent (from 2,450 to 2,618 calories). Government recommendations, by contrast, are a mere 1,600 calories a day for women and 2,200 a day for men.

I heard an interview the other day, it was with a man who said he was moving into his 1940's house. He started putting his dinner plates away, and they wouldn't fit! He thought, "What idiot would make a cupboard to small to fit a standard size dinner plate". Then he realized that the dinner plates in the 1940's were smaller!

I know I have heard people say that you should use a smaller plate, and I happen to have some old dinner plates, so I thought I would try to see if there was a real difference. I was surprised!!! So I took pictures.

Here is my dinner on the smaller plate. I thought this looked like plenty of food to eat for dinner... UNTIL, I put it on my standard size dinner plate!

I don't know about you, but if I was using this bigger plate, I would of kept filling it up. It looked too empty!

Well I don't know about you, but I am going to use my smaller plates from now on, it is a huge difference.

Brilliant Kelli!

Where I live in South Eat Asia.....they use TINY little bowls to eat their rice. They fill with rice and then pick meat and veg from communal dishes in the middle to add to their bowl.

You never feel pressured to eat too much this way.

Much better than sticking a massive plate of food infront of someone where they feel compelled and get into the habit of eating it all.

The portion size problem is not something new. *puts on red riding hood voice* My what a big plate you have!

Certainly, putting ones food on a smaller plate can help, but even more important is recognizing proper portion sizes, and making healthier food choices. Most people do not realize that one meal from McDonalds often has more fat than they need in an entire day, and almost enough calories. Not to mention the portion sizes... buying one of those third pounders-- too much!

May I pick on your plate, Kelli? I am by no means picking on you or your choices, just using your plate as an example since we have a visual here in the thread. Even though you went to a smaller plate there, you also could have taken off one of the chicken pieces and cut the rice in half. A green vegetable would be a better choice, since corn is a starch, and chicken without the breaded coating would also be a better choice. That sauce on the chicken looks good! Is it a sweet and sour type of sauce? That is a good choice of sauce that is on there, because it is not a heavy cream based and butter filled sauce. I'm not sure what is in the rice, so I can't comment much on it.

Not surprising. I think as we have become wealthier, we have been able to eat more and buy larger plates. Which one influenced the other, I"m not sure. All I know is that both plate sizes and wealth have increased since the 40's, and so has obesity.

What really annoys me is when you go to a fancy restaurant, you get an ok to decent-sized serve but with a massive plate. It seems the ratio of plate size to serve size goes up as the restaurant class does. So annoying.

I have been to those places with big plates and tiny portions. (They probably want you to just buy more food, which of course, costs a whole bunch more!)

Most of the places we eat, when we do go out, give such large portions that we pair up and share meals. :thumbsup

It's funny you should mention that... Because I have been studying God's word for about ten years on how I should eat, and there are so many Scriptures about dieting, such as:

The Great Apostasy

1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

So would you consider my chicken sticks Clean, or unclean??? Hehe, I know you were just trying to help me and I thank you so much for that, but God revealed to me that I was more addicted to dieting, than I was to food, and when I quit dieting, the food stopped being a forbidden fruit, and something the devil could beat me up with, and I am not in bondage to it anymore! Cool huh!

I think we should just relax, enjoy what we like (God did create our taste-buds) and eat in moderation.

Actually, I wasn't suggesting any of that. :) You seemed to miss the point completely. Since the thread was about portion control and obesity, I was pointing out that food selection also plays a part. Nothing is "forbidden" in this sense, but certain foods are healthier than others and also certain food combinations are better than others. The plate above, for example has : rice (grain), breaded/ flour coated chicken (grain), and corn (grain).

Back to nothing being forbidden, and portion control. Things which have higher fat and calorie content are not "forbidden", but should be eaten less frequently and in smaller quantities. There is a big difference between eating a bowlful of fudge and eating a bowlful of grapes. This doesn't mean that fudge is forbidden or that someone can never eat it.

Reducing one's plate is fine, but it will not reduce the obesity problem unless people also learn portion control and choosing healthier alternatives.
 
I wanted to add that I still have sauce envy, and want more info on your sauce. :thumbsup

Also, I am glad that you are not a slave to dieting, and that God has shown you how to have freedom in him. My intention was not to pick on you, but just to use your plate as an example since it is a visual in the thread. I apologize if I came off as sounding critical, as that was not my intent at all.

Tomorrow at Thanksgiving you can come by and criticize my table. :biggrin :thumbsup I can promise that it is the one time of the year that I allow myself decadence in my cooking, so it is the perfect time to come poke at my me. :lol
 
Pouring rain, aaahhh, don't even worry, I hope I wouldn't be so sensitive that you being nice and trying to educate me on something would offend me!! I didn't ever think anything other than being thankful to you for caring... :)

I can tell you at one time I was so well educated on food and nutrition, and I just kept getting fatter and fatter. I would look at all my books and think, I could be a professor. I was an expert on counting calories, food exchanges, some of the diets said to eat more fat, other said less fat. More carbohydrates, less carbohydrates, eating moderately, eating a lot, eating only certain foods at certain times of the day. Drinking water with my food, not drinking water with my food, aaarrrgg[FONT=&quot]!!! It was so exhausting. [/FONT]

Then I started praying and asking God which one of those were the best and He led me to this scripture.

Hebrews 13:8-9[FONT=&quot] Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.

[/FONT]I could not have been more occupied, it was then that I decided to see what the Bible had to say about it. YAY!!! it is FULL of information about the way to have a proper relationship with food, for a person, like me who's deepest and most abiding sin was not overeating but the obsession with being thin, and dieting.
