At least those old cars could be worked on by the owner. These new, highly computerized cars are nigh on to impossible to work on unless one has a lot of training.
not really, a four credit course is all I ever had. electronics is electronics. once you learn it just how they work apply it. ie the camera to the computer. ok, it doesn't work. find the flow chart in the repair manual. follow and it will walk you through how it is to be repaired. they have to make them to be understandable and fixed.
I would have to retrain on the newer stuff for a refresher. but well pid data in obd2 is old. I have worked for learning a gm car that I call K.I.T.T. and it had a Rochester 4 bbl on it and it had a pcm that allowed live data. that was an 82 model.

That's my point, AirDancer. I open the hood on a car today and think "OMG, what the heck is all that stuff?" I can still change the oil and work on brakes, and that's about it. And, I guess I don't have to worry about gapping points anymore.
 
lol. of course I cant talk. im not afraid of a hybrid. but since I don't have the tools to work on the batteries I don't. its a big sucker,and also those can start up during the oil change if you leave the keys in the ignition.

I wonder about those electric cars, how much efficiency do the batteries lose in cold weather. They've got to be a whole lot more efficient in Arizona than they are in North Dakota.

I didn't have a lick of automotive knowledge when I got my 69 Nova, but I was able to fix every problem I encountered. And when I had to, I could start it using a tire iron. :lol

That's funny!

First apartment while a freshman at university: Front door could be unlocked with our neighbor's Volkswagen Beetle's ignition key.

It was a good thing we got on great with those neighbors .... wouldn't want to think of the harm that could have come from them having access to my apartment!

they last longer in the cold weather. I get at the most three years out a battery in florida.
 
Electric cars would be rather useless in much of Illinois during the winter, during the short, grey days.
hybrids aren't true electric and neither is the evo. both have a gas engine that will either generate the power or charge the battery as its working.

This is true but a cold battery can't produce the level of current of a warm one for the same reason they last longer in cold conditions.
