My name is Heather. My husband and I got married 2 weeks after I graduated high school. We recently celebrated our 1st anniversary, and our life together gets better every day. We worship every Sunday on the Worship Team at church. We also have a dog named Porcia (poor-sha). We bought our first house last December, and I am attending Dental Assisting school (thanks to Mike pushing me to go when I didn't want to). I think that we bring each other closer to the Lord and we each make each other a better person. I was just wondering who else out there is young and married and what you're doing to make it.

I too was a young bride. I got married 2 months after I graduated high school. :biggrin

Did you get all the slack from your friends and teachers that I got? My entire senior year, all I heard was "Your marriage won't last. You're going to ruin your life".

They were almost right. Our first year of marriage was AWFUL. Long story short, we ended up splitting up for two months. We got back together, I got saved and we had our first child 2 years after getting married. There were still ups and downs, but we finally figured things out (mainly that we BOTH needed to change and grow up).

We just celebrated our 12th anniversary on August 26th!

Congratulations! Our first year was TERRIBLE too! There were times when I just wanted to keep on driving and not come home. Yes, I did get A LOT of slack. People were always telling me how young I was and that when I figured out who I was that I would hate myself for the decision I had made. A lot of people thought that we were pregnant (which wasn't the case) and others thought that we were both trying to get out of current living conditions. I grew up in a church where it was severely frowned upon if you lived with a male who wasn't family before you got married while his family insisted that we lived together first to get to know each other. We decided to wait until we got married to move in with each other and that was the source of many of our arguments. We have ups and downs, and I know that we always will. I think people are starting to realize that we married each other because we love each other. I am so glad that things worked out for you!

Oh yeah, we got the pregnancy remarks too. Everyone figures that when you're a young bride, you're getting married because you're pregnant. :smt017

You will both probably have to change some. Marriage is NOT easy. My sister is 9 years older than me and she got married at age 17 (complicated situation...not pregnancy...but for the best because her husband saved her from a lot of danger by them getting married), so I was like an only child. I was spoiled. My mom never taught me how to cook and never expected me to do any kind of chores. When I got married, I couldn't cook, do laundry, etc. It was pathetic.

I had a lot of problems of my own that my husband didn't know about and it was putting a huge strain on our relationship.

I'm so thankful we got back together though. Once we got back together, I got the help I needed, he did a lot of changing of his own and it was like a new marriage.

It's always nice to hear that the spouse is supportive. Growing up, my mom was the head of the house, so when we first got married I treated my husband like my child. It took almost the whole year to learn how to treat him like an equal and not an under.

That is exactly what it was like when I was growing up (and it still is). My dad acts as though he can't do anything himself. I don't know if he was always that way or if my mom spoiled him, but she is the head of the house. I don't even think he knows how to write a check. She talks to him like a child, but it's really his own fault.

My mom has just always been in charge. I think she hated not having control. The way she grew up, she would get in trouble for everything and I think that she didn't want that to happen again.

Heather - thanks for sharing - the best thing you can do is get in a good bible study - I would recommend The Inspired Wife written by Heather Lowrie - it is a must read especially for the newly married. It is an easy read and I know you will love it - you can look up the author's blog and order it or do in online with the author on Feb. 18th. http://www.theinspiredwife.blogspot.com and there is also a website http://www.theinspiredwife.com Good Luck! :tongue
