There's a lot of truth to this article. Several years ago I was paying over $200/month for my combo of internet, telephone, and TV. I was getting pretty tired of the bill, and pretty frustrated with watching long strings of commercials on the cable TV that I was paying so much money for. It wasn't uncommon to count 15 commercials in a row and so many times I had even forgotten what I was watching by the time all the commercials were done! That's not to mention that out of maybe 150 to 200 TV channels, only a handful of them had anything worth watching. And then I had to watch on their schedule and all cluttered up with those commercials.
So I cancelled the whole thing one day. Just like in the article, the phone company that put in the regular telephone lines offers DSL internet for only $30/month including all taxes and charges. (No voice telephone or anything other than basic internet access for that price, and they don't advertise it so you have to ask them about it.) I signed up for that, signed up for netflix for another $10/month, and bought a Magic Jack telephone with free long distance over the entire United States and Canada for a one time investment of $60 and only a couple dollars per month for the service. So all in all I reduced my bill from over $200/month to barely more than $40/month, have no reduction at all in my phone service, have no reduction in my internet connection (while I know DSL is slower than cable, I can't tell the difference when I'm using it), and my TV is vastly improved in that I don't have any commercials and can watch whatever show or movie I want to anytime I want to and as many times as I want to right on my regular TVs (limited to what they have available, just like any other TV service of course) without even the need for the computer to be running. So overall I have much better service for about 1/5 the cost. I house sit on a regular basis for a computer professional who has the top cable service, best modems available, and all the premium channels on his TV. Sometimes I am there (using all his services) for a week at a time, and I can honestly say he has nothing I find more enjoyable or usable than what I have for a fraction of the cost. In fact, after about an hour of watching his commercial filled TV channels, I just get frustrated and go back to my Netflix.
