we did not have fairy tail books .. Not kidding.... we had Bible stories..
so you didn't read on your own these:
alice through the looking glass and the like from the same author?
mother goose?
snow white?

the trilogy and the hobbit. were written in the 30's

It wasn't religion there was no money for anything ... I spent most of my time out side climbing trees building forts playing with little frogs

I loved it the time Uncle Arthur showed up in Darrin's sugar bowl.

Oh, that character! Paul Lynd really made that guy come alive. I never saw "Bewitched" as anything but a sitcom with a silly premise that set up some wonderful comedy.

But then, I was 10 and living in a secular home.

well then I can send you a lot of tadpoles and frogs. free to you. I have about at least 20 of them when it rains. they also love my wife's plants. bromeliads galore.

I thought the Harry Potter movies were rather silly with them holding those magic wands. I am concerned with movies like Harry Potter and others with magic because I have young kids and I have heard many other Christians say to be careful about these types of shows. My question is...what is the negative effect that watching movies like Harry Potter can have on a Christian?

IMO... cute things like the TV show Bewitched... opened to the door .. sorta like being a little bit pregnant. Playing around with this soothsayers and witches is not so bad JUST what do YOU see wrong with Bewitched it is just cute... is not so bad... the door is opened...

Deu 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, But God told me Harry Potter was ok it is innocent just like Bewitched from the 60s... and gap gets wider..
Deu 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Deu 18:12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Do we encourage our children to watch, emulate, read, etc other things God's Words says are abominations ? Sin all dressed up looking pretty, fun, cute isn't sinful ?

yes but it goes back to the flapper days. think betty boop and what she is in the old 20ish style of clothing. im not saying we go back to that. to go back to being modest on any level as a society would be nice and a blessing from god.

exactly trace it back to the garden
I wasn't alive then, but I do wonder how honestly in modesty and purity people were in general. I know of a ton of exceptions from history of shanty towns near army bases and also vets of that era telling me stories.

Why in the world people don't see this subtle sliding, is beyond me. So many people seem to think that Satan is going to don a red suit, and grow horns, and then expect that we will fall in line behind him. What in the world do they think the passage about his masquerading as an angel of light means?

it depends. to some its not sinful. to me it isn't. I don't watch much tv now, nor listen to secular music. not even elvis or older. my choice.

To me, most of music and TV are not, in and of themselves, "sinful". I don't think Disney (as much as I preach against it) or Harry Potter, are either one, specifically "sinful". The sin enters in when the comfortableness in watching begins to entice us away from doing and seeing things in life as scripture outlines they should be.

It's like the passage about eating meat offered to idols........ absolutely nothing wrong with that IF it is just a hunk of food to you. BUT, if you begin to see it as something more, AND you go ahead and ignore that inner (Holy Spirit) urge by rationalizing and excusing..... THEN you are trampling on God's obvious will for you.

EXAMPLE: "Yeah, I will admit a certain show does do as some of you have said.... BUT.... I can still watch it, and I won't be affected by any of that subversive or subliminal stuff." Let's face it, we are just trying to kid ourselves.

I agree Jason i can listen to Elvis and it does not 'get' me.. that does not mean each step mankind has taken is not been a widening the gateway..

Agree Willie..

some of what i said is about society in general...

I used to love Mash. (Army TV show) Just LOVED it.

However, my wife pointed out several pretty low-class truths about the shows. I laughed. I scoffed. I still kept watching it. BUT, I now began to see the things she was talking about. I eventually admitted the truth about the disturbing attractiveness of those things in the show, told myself that it was time to let it go.
