God speaks to us through His word and there is a testifying from the Holy Spirit to our spirit (I'm not sure how to explain it). But, it's never something outside of God's word. When God "speaks to me" it's usually in the form of verses coming to my mind. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin so in my case, bringing to my mind an unconfessed sin.

If I were to continue to read this book, I would take lightly the words of the author and measure them against the verses she shares at the end of each devotional. Keeping in mind these are not Jesus' "actual" words is important. That said, when I read the book, I understood that the author was taking liberties with the text but I never thought of the words as the actual words of Jesus.

I would caution any reader to read this book with care and definitely check out the links I provided. Knowledge is power.
True.

This is from the link someone shared here. Keep in mind, this is a spirit that the author says told her to write this. The bible passages added are suppose to give it credence. However, we can learn all this channeled stuff by reading the bible itself and it says this and we know it is of God. Sarah Young uses automatic writing, which is condemned in the very testament she's sharing scriptures from. And she's first trusting her seeking to hear from God, which if she were Christian she would know she can because it is a personal relationship with the indwelling holy spirit. And what answers her she gives credit as being God. But Jesus said don't trust this. Remember? He told his disciples that after he departed from them, after he walked 40 days after raising from the dead, that there would be those that come to them and beseech them saying, come follow me Christ is here. Look, Jesus is over there.
And Jesus forewarned his disciples not to believe such people.
But he changed his mind and now channels himself to Sarah Young? Has anyone ever even thought what that woman is attempting to tell you about herself when she claims Jesus gave her these messages for you? Young thinks she's delivering a different bible.
That he doesn't have all he needs to say in the Bible. He doesn't speak to you as one of his own. No, he found this woman and told her to tell you this.
And she believes it is Jesus talking? When Jesus said he'd not do this?

What is all this talk of fearing spirits?

Is this not God's word?:
1 John 4 English Standard Version (ESV)Test the Spirits
4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Oh and by the way guys, I just wanted to make this clarification. This book is more of a journal to me than anything where I write down all my thoughts and feelings about a subject. I could really care less about anything else. I mean yes, I sort of care about some of her opinions, but that doesn't really affect me too much to stop using it because of that. I mean as maplegoat previously stated, to each their own.

The passage says test the spirits. Not fear the spirit. It is even a mistranslated text that some read as we're to fear God. As in be afraid of. When we're instead suppose to revere, respect, God.

Here's a really simple question. Has anyone thought to ask, is Sarah Young Christian?

Sure she's a Christian. She's a missionary, her and her husband travel widely, planting churches in Japan and Australia, they now work in Australia with Japanese-speaking people there.

The issue is the daily readings/journal entries -- are first-person as if coming straight from Jesus -- this is the same format as the earlier book GOD CALLING, by two other women.

I don't know what to think of anything claiming to be verbatim from Jesus -- other than straight out of the Bible -- they are beautiful thoughts, both Jesus Calling and God Calling by the other two women.

I have both books, I can see more along the lines of "this is the author's IMAGINATION of these beautiful words of Jesus coming to us."

Some of the articles are pretty witch-hunty against JESUS CALLING and GOD CALLING.

Like they want to throw Sarah Young in a river -- if she's a witch, she won't drown -- if she drowns, she wasn't a witch but she's dead.

By their FRUITS you shall know them.

Am I disturbed by some things in books but still get a lot out of them?

Sure. I am disturbed by Calvinism, Roman Catholicism and other things but will not "avoid" reading from Catholic or Calvinist authors.

Yanno. During the times I was closest to God and my faith was the strongest, God used to speak directly to my heart quite often. I've even held conversations.
There are also numerous times God has used a song, a picture, someone else speaking, basically other people's words, to speak and communicate with me.

Maybe that's why I don't find this book far fetched at all and it had never bothered me.

That said, we are told to test the spirits. Any "voice" that we hear isn't of God if it's contrary to Scripture and Scriptural teaching.
So dealing with anything heard from God directly, while definitely possible--the entire reason I'm a believer is because I sought God asking for confirmation of His existence and after some time in prayer and searching the Bible He spoke to me--is something to be cautious about.

I can see the book being shaky because of this. But I don't recall reading anything in it (I do own a copy and used to read it quite often) that ever seemed concerning.

I'd say definitely do not treat it as a replacement for personal Bible study. The Bible is still the primary means that God uses to teach and edify, it's the gold standard.
(God also used to speak to me when I was reading the Bible. He would point things out to me and I learned quite a bit that way. It was like having a personal teacher.)

"Automatic writing or psychography is an alleged psychic ability allowing a person to produce written words without consciously writing. The words are claimed to arise from a subconscious, spiritual or supernatural source." (online source)
I feel like the key words here are, "without consciously writing". Which (to my understanding) sounds more like possession, and less like "ok God what do you have to say to me today" and writing it down

I think there is a lot to be learned from the pages on the linked site that addresses Sarah Young's book. The images posted here too inform quite a bit. Whom is she hoping we'll believe in when she says it is "Jesus" calling?
When God speaks to his children why would a woman seemingly hope to write a new testament of his messages to the world?
And if it was holy why would she redact in future writings the open information in the first edition about how the messages were received? As Channeled writing.

I have to marvel at the offence with a term like "without consciously writing" when the subject is "religious." Yet the same concept of any other author commenting that "The words just flowed, and the book practically wrote itself." is not a problem at all. I mean God told Moses to "just go, and I will give you the words." And the Bible talks of Apostles not being concerned about their words as they go before kings, since those words will be given to them as they speak.

People keep calling that an intentional deception, I see it as she saw the backlash and thought "maybe that wasn't the best wording to use". Because I've done that often. I posted a thing on a website stating I was neutral on a topic, this was a small button I made for other people to use. People got mad at me saying I can't be neutral on a moral topic, after thinking it over I thought"that's a fair point, maybe wording it another way is more accurate". So I changed the wording on the button. Was I being deceptive?
People can use certain words and phrases without being fully aware of their original or actual meaning

For the rest of that, why then have worship songs? There are numerous ones that don't quote scripture, yet people commonly find comfort and worship in those.
I've also had people pray over me and say things like "God has forgiven you" or "God isn't done with you yet" despite having no inkling of my personal inner struggles, yet what they said was precisely what I needed to hear right at that moment. Is that extra-Biblical and dangerous?

I also don't see where she ever claimed it was meant to replace the Bible.

1 John 4:1-2 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

I'm unable to copy that image link to post alone so I'm quoting after an edit to point to the issue of concern. That page on the right that is in the book in question. Is that for those who own the book August 30?
If so, would you be so kind as to fully share the text that is slightly visible there as reading, "mistress Sarah...." ?

I tried to look, but that book is buried either somewhere in my room or in the living room and I can't find it anymore. (My house looks like I'm a hoarder, so finding anything in it is difficult if I don't use it a lot.)

(Is this what you need?)
August 30

THERE IS NO PLACE so desolate that you
cannot find Me there. When Hagar fled from her
mistress, Sarah, into the wilderness, she thought she
was utterly alone and forsaken. But Hagar encoun-
tered Me in that desolate place. There she addressed
Me as the Living One who sees me. Through that
encounter with My Presence, she gained courage to
return to her mistress.

No set of circumstances could ever isolate you
from My loving Presence. Not only do I see you always;
I see you as a redeemed saint, gloriously radiant in My
righteousness. That is why I take great delight in you
and rejoice over you with singing!

GENESIS 16:7-14 AMP; PSALM 139:7-10;
ZEPHANIAH 3:17

Yes, I would presume that is the text. Thank you for your trouble. :)

I don't think the author means it to replace the Bible. I think it rather odd that it would be seen as a extra-Biblical textual message from Emmanuel to readers .
As it reads in the bits I've gleaned from this thread it seems as though the author is extrapolating text from scriptures, which is why the passage references below to make it appear as if Emmanuel is guiding the reader to those reminders, while interpolating her own words to bring a contemporary contextual meaning to those scriptures that would be applicable in today's verbiage while in essence repeating what is scripture but not scripture.

I hearken back to A Course In Miracles, the producers of that older work making the same claims as Ms. Young. Jesus was speaking.
Not them.
