Its called faith.

Sanctified does not mean faith.

Each word means something.

Faith is a noun, and is the substance of things hoped for.

Sanctified is a verb, and is an action word that means -

  1. to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow
  2. to separate from profane things and dedicate to God
    1. consecrate things to God
    2. dedicate people to God
  3. to purify
    1. to cleanse externally
    2. to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin
    3. to purify internally by renewing of the soul

If you have the Spirit Christ in you then you are Holy and blameless before God and are one with Jesus. (sanctified)

If you have the Spirit of Christ in you, then you have the ability to walk according (in obedience) to the Spirit.

Again it’s a deliberate act of our obedience (by the Spirit), to practice righteousness, to walk according to the Spirit, rather than walking according to the sinful desires of our flesh.

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

again

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8

These are the two choices of the born again Christian -

  • he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption,
  • but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

We must deliberately choose to sow, or invest ourselves to the Spirit.

You speak of obedience to remain in Jesus.
Its in Jesus that I am sanctified. I am in Jesus by faith. A new creation is an act of God.

But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Ok.

Could you help me to understand what you mean by “your faith” in Jesus?

JLB
Because Jesus stated so. If at all possible in understandings written I put the most weight on Jesus stated.
"A place among those who are sanctified by faith in me"

My faith in Jesus? I have believed in Him and prayed to Him as far back as my memory goes. I believe He exists and He is Lord.

I didn't state sanctified means faith. I stated I am sanctified by my faith in Jesus as Jesus stated. I am one with Jesus by the Spirit God caused to live in me. How can I not be considered Holy by God in that oneness? And that Spirit was received by faith in Jesus. I am not nourished by my obedience. I am nourished by the true vine. I am not sanctified by my obedience. I am sanctified by my faith in Jesus.

You speak of obedience to remain in Jesus.

Yes, Absolutely.

It starts by obeying the Gospel, and continues by obeying His commandments, which is how we remain “in Christ”.

Jesus instructs us to remain in Him.

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:6

Here is how the scriptures teach us to remain in Him.

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24

  • he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.

In addition we are to remain in the doctrine of Christ as well, in which we teach what He and His Apostles taught.

When we go beyond teaching what Christ taught, in which we promote man made doctrines, we are in danger of no longer having Christ.

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 2 John 9

His Gospel, His Doctrine, and His Commandments are all about loving God, and loving our neighbor.

Otherwise we are simply promoting “anti Christ” teachings.

Because Jesus stated so. If at all possible in understandings written I put the most weight on Jesus stated.
"A place among those who are sanctified by faith in me"

My faith in Jesus? I have believed in Him and prayed to Him as far back as my memory goes. I believe He exists and He is Lord.

Believing in Jesus, or believing He exists is what even the demons do.

They for sure believe Jesus exists.

The Gospel, however, is about turning away from Satan as your Lord, by confessing Jesus as your Lord in which you commit to obey Him as Lord.

That is how we repent.

That is what repent means.

It’s right there in the scripture you quoted.

I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. Acts 26:17-20

  • in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins

Repenting is about changing the lord you serve, and being transferred into the kingdom of God, because you confess Jesus as Lord.

  • but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God

Repent in the context of the Gospel means “turn to God” in submission to Him as Lord.

If we are called to turn to God, then by default we are called to
turn away from Satan as our lord,

This is how we first obey the Gospel, by confessing Jesus as Lord.

For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10

  • with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Amen!

Remember though, it doesn’t stop there, as we are called to remain “in Him”.

This is how we are instructed to remain in Him.

Also, here is how we are cleansed -

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Notice the word “if”.

Again, a deliberate act of our obedience to confess our sin, and be cleansed of all unrighteousness.

JLB

I am not sanctified by my obedience. I am sanctified by my faith in Jesus.

Same thing brother.

That’s how faith operates to justify or sanctify or save, or heal...

By obedience.

Which is why it’s called the obedience of faith.

The only way a person is justified or made righteous or born again, or sanctified is by the obedience of faith.

But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: Romans 16:26

  • the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith

What is all this about? We are both on a christian forum and I would have thought the understanding is we are Christians. That we don't confess Christ from impure or false motives.
I have the Spirit of Christ in me and when I ask something of the Lord, its because I believe in Him, and I don't ask expecting to receive because of my righteousness but because of His mercy.

A long time ago I asked for the gift of the Spirit from Jesus and wouldn't stop asking Him until I received a sign that it was in me. I received that sign shortly after alot of prayer.

I can pass this test.
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?

I am sanctified and one with Jesus. It was received by faith.

Jesus has made Himself known to me over the decades and answers my prayers. I known Him and of more importance He knows me. If I did something that displeases Him He lets me know that as well. Its good training. For my good.
I give you an example. Once a troublesome family member asked something of me and I said no. I felt guilty about it afterwards and justified myself in prayer to Jesus with, "its not fault". Sometime later I asked something of the Lord. Shortly afterward I felt the presence of the Spirit, (outward), and the words that were heard in my mind, not audible, were "its not my fault". It dimmed my halo. (smile) But that is only one of my interactions in my relationship with Jesus over the years.

Now I will repeat we are not free to sin. However I am sanctified by my faith in Jesus. My mind is not a slave to sin but has been set free by the Spirit of Christ in me. I do belong to Him.

How can I not be considered Holy by God in that oneness?

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. 2 Timothy 2:20-21

Depends what you mean by actions.
We did this before.
Jesus to Paul
....to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

After much discussion, Peter got up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days, God made a choice among you that the Gentiles would hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, showed His approval by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as He did to us. He made no distinction between us and them, for He cleansed their hearts by faith.
Randy, I'm enjoying the exchange between you and JLB.

I'm going to say that some biblical principles must be clarified somewhat because at the writing of the N.T. some ideas came through that were not very clear until they were made so with the help of the Holy Spirit and those that put together our doctrines, which make us Christian.

One of these doctrine would be the one of the Trinity or Godhead. Another would be the Deity of Jesus. Another would be HOW He came to be our salvation or our atonement. Still another is the use of the term Kingdom of God and/or Kingdom of heaven. Paul used these terms interchangeably and it took some study to understand what he meant by each one.

Sanctification is the same. There are some of the Christian faith that believe God does everything for us, makes every decision for us, and we do nothing for ourselves...this would be the reformed faith.

Every other denomination believes that we have a say in our sanctification and play a part in it. We could call this a cooperation with God....He plays a part and we play a part.

God gave us Jesus and Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit when He left us. John 16:7 tells us that Jesus is going to send us a helper. That helper is the Holy Spirit. Why do we need a helper? In John 15:5 Jesus tells us that we can do nothing without Him. Like what for instance?

JLB has given perfect scripture to show that we have a part in our sanctification,,,or, in our being set apart for service to God.
God sends us the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit helps us to do what God wants us to do, and this doing is the part we play in our sanctification.

Righteousness means being right with God.
Sanctification means being set apart for service to God,,,which, in turn, makes us righteous if we obey Him.

This obedience is the part we play in our sanctification. You DO state that we are to obey....THIS is our part. Jesus does not sanctify us all by Himself...it requires our action...our obedience.

We are sanctified IN HIM, because we obey Him, as He said to do.

When I finally understood the above, it helped me a lot in my walk with God. You may not need this help,,,but for others reading along, this idea may be helpful to them.

Justification is by GOD ALONE. Nothing we do can gain us God's approval but we are saved by His grace through the instrument of our faith.

Right after justification, we are sanctified IN HIM...a cooperative action between us and God --- He tells us what we should do, and we do it.

Ephesians 4:22-24
We are exhorted to put on the new self. This requires action from us...that action is the process of sanctification.

In Mathew 5:48 Jesus tells us to be perfect, as our Father is perfect. He does not say that this goal will be achieved for us.

No matter how you want to word it such as," We are sanctified IN HIM, because we obey Him, as He said to do."
We are in Him by faith. We remain in Him by obedience. And its in Him that we are sanctified.
Therefore as Jesus stated, "We are sanctified by faith in Him"
Would you obey Him or even be in Him apart from faith? As in you believe in Him. Can you agree that it is in Him that we are sanctified?

I have a relationship with Jesus. If there was a theology no one could explain I would ask Him for understanding. Whether people like those answers or not. Man is in the habit of making many theologies some opposing each other. I have my written word and my relationship with Jesus to see for myself what is truth. And I am In Him and go to Him because I believe in Him. Jesus is Lord.

We are justified by faith in Him.
We are sanctified by our obedience through faith, as spoken of in Romans 1:5.

I have no quarrel with you...I just wish we all spoke the same language - using the same terms.

See you around!

Its to bring about the obedience of faith. Faith in Jesus.
Your missing the Lords main point. -In Him
to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

Belief in Him. He alone. No other person can save us.

I would think a pagan world would need the knowledge of the truth.
Two responses.
You either believe in Jesus and repent or don't believe and continue to sin. Those that received Him by faith, just as the Israelite's, received the same Spirit they were given and were also given the right to be called the children of God.

So unless you believe in other name that we can be saved and I know you don't
You were sanctified by your faith IN HIM. That is not a error.
If a were to add a word it would be sincere. A sincere faith in Him. The outward fruit of such a faith would state that in actions. Rather then those that continue to sin.

Romans
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name,

That's faith in Jesus.

I am sanctified by my faith IN JESUS.

Its salvation by the forgiveness of sins which is found in Jesus alone. John's baptism was a baptism of repentance as He prepared the people for Jesus.

Does the Lord need to state excuse my brevity?
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies.

I qualified we are not free to sin several posts ago.

Back to the original question.
I think to violate the (shall nots) in the commandments Jesus spoke of leads to death. "By their fruit you will recognize them"
