Are gap-years a waste of time?
Would young people be better off travelling the world than being involved in “spurious†overseas gap-year aid projects?
Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) says that "voluntourism" often costs students thousands of pounds and does nothing to help developing countries.
The charity also criticises the gap-year industry for catering for the needs of participants rather than those they claimed to be helping.
Up to 200,000 people from the UK take time out every year according to the Year Out Group, an association of gap-year providers.
Have you taken part or are you currently involved in a gap-year volunteer project?
Do you think it benefited the community it intended to help?
Are students’ expectations too high when planning gap-year projects?
