Nowadays, I’d basically say that water is water. In spite of General Booth, water baptism (WB) is still a good thing for Christians, internally and as a witness. While it is usually best by total immersion, sprinkling is fine for Christians, but meaningless (and some argue harmful) for nonbelievers. Whether the water is muddy, pure, or salty (the Dead Sea?), is IMO irrelevant to the rite. Similarly for the eucharist, whether or not bread (some prefer symbolic wafers) is with or without yeast, bootest not, nor whether one goes for alcoholic wine or Ribena, or water plus imagination.
For WB, some divide over what is ‘the’ correct formula: there is no biblical formula. It is apropos God the triune, father, son, and spirit (even if Oneness Christians don’t see this), and is in the authority (name) of Jesus/Jesus Christ/Lord Jesus Christ. And as Hans Küng pointed out in his book, The Church, any Christian may WB another. Küng argued that WB was priestly, but that protestants are right about all Christians being priests, though often wrong not to practice what they preach.
