Did God really forsake Christ in Matthew 27:46, or was something else going on here?

Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

I have wrestled with the question, why was Jesus' crucifixion so much more to suffer than anyone else that had been crucified? I don't claim to know exactly what Jesus went through but I have reasoned this to be the moment when the sins of the world (past, present, and future) were poured out upon Jesus' shoulders and he really felt the total disconnect from the Father. God separates himself from sin. He has to and when "he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him" (2 Cor. 5:21) Jesus was at that moment separated from the Father so the Father could unleash His wrath upon the sins.

That's how I come to grips with it for what it's worth. I think we struggle to really put into perspective what Jesus actually endured for our sake. Oh, we recognize that he lived a perfect sinless life, suffered greatly, and then died on the cross for us but do we really and truly embrace what it is that He did? He stepped up and took undeserved punishment for us. He's the hero in the movie that stands up and says, "Take me and let them go!"

Thank God for Jesus!!!!

How must it feel to be without sin and then all at once bear the sins of the world on your shoulders what would "you" say?

*edit: forgot something "again"

II Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

I hope I can add something here that you will find both comforting and amazingly cool about what Jesus is saying on the cross.

Jesus was referring to scripture when he cried out, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" The reference is to Psalms 22:1. interestingly, if you read all of this Psalm you will see that Christ is saying much more than just the first verse. Check it out. This Psalm is, in my opinion, a foretelling of Christ. A prophecy. It was written about 1,000 years before Christ, and yet it prophetically matches Christ and His crucifixion, and here we see Him making reference to it. Keep in mind that crucifixion was not "invented", if you will, at the time Psalm 22 was written. So, to me Jesus is not literally saying that God is forsaking Him....He's pointing to Psalms 22. That out to make the hair on your neck stand straight up.

22 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear;
And in the night season, and am not silent.
3 But You are holy,
Enthroned in the praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in You;
They trusted, and You delivered them.
5 They cried to You, and were delivered;
They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.
6 But I am a worm, and no man;
A reproach of men, and despised by the people.
7 All those who see Me ridicule Me;
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 “He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”
9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb;
You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts.
10 I was cast upon You from birth.
From My mother’s womb
You have been My God.
11 Be not far from Me,
For trouble is near;
For there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have surrounded Me;
Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me.
13 They gape at Me with their mouths,
Like a raging and roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water,
And all My bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It has melted within Me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death.
16 For dogs have surrounded Me;
The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.
They pierced My hands and My feet;
17 I can count all My bones.
They look and stare at Me.
18 They divide My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.
19 But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me;
O My Strength, hasten to help Me!
20 Deliver Me from the sword,
My precious life from the power of the dog.
21 Save Me from the lion’s mouth
And from the horns of the wild oxen!
You have answered Me.
22 I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him!
All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,
And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
Nor has He hidden His face from Him;
But when He cried to Him, He heard.
25 My praise shall be of You in the great assembly;
I will pay My vows before those who fear Him.
26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
Let your heart live forever!
27 All the ends of the world
Shall remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the families of the nations
Shall worship before You.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s,
And He rules over the nations.
29 All the prosperous of the earth
Shall eat and worship;
All those who go down to the dust
Shall bow before Him,
Even he who cannot keep himself alive.
30 A posterity shall serve Him.
It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,
31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born,
That He has done this.

Jesus was separated from God for a time as he was taking all sin upon himself as scripture says God’s holiness demands that he turn away from sin. Other words God loves the sinner, but hates the sin and it's the sin that God separates himself from.

Habakkuk 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

Right!

Christ was teaching from the cross. Many teach that Christ had taken on the sins of the world and He was a little dirty, how ignorant of the word.

Christ was quoting David from Psalm 22 of the events that would take place from going to the cross, to His resurrection. Read Psalm 22 for the words of Christ from the Cross that are given to us.

This is what Jesus went through as he laid His life down so we can have eternal life with Him. I cry every time I read this as I can almost feel the pain Jesus went through.
John15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

ISAIAH 50:6 I HID NOT MY FACE FROM SHAME.

JOHN 18:22 FIRST TO HIT JESUS WITH AN OPEN PALM ON HIS FACE WAS A PAGAN ARMY OFFICER.

JOHN 18:23 JESUS ASKED THE OFFICER "WHY DID YOU HIT ME"?

ISAIAH 50:6 I ALSO HID NOT MY FACE FROM SPITTING.

MARK 15:19 A REED HIT HIM ON THE HEAD.

LUKE 22:63 THEY HIT HIS BODY WITH THEIR FISTS.

ISAIAH 53:5 HE WAS BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES.

ISAIAH 50:6 I GAVE MY CHEEKS TO THEM THAT PLUCKED OFF MY BEARD.

JOHN 19:2 A CROWN OF THORNS WAS FORCED INTO THE FLESH OF HIS HEAD

MATTHEW 27:28 STRIPPED NAKED.

ISAIAH 50:6 I GAVE MY BACK TO THE SMITERS.

PSALMS 22:17 I COUNT MY BONES: THEY LOOK AND STARE UPON ME

ISAIAH. 53:2 WHEN WE SEE HIM, THERE IS NO BEAUTY THAT WE SHOULD DESIRE HIM.

ISAIAH 52:14 MANY WERE ASTONISHED AT HIM. HIS FACE AND BODY WAS MARRED MORE THAN ANY MAN.

JOHN 19:23 SOLDIERS CRUCIFIED CHRIST JESUS.

JOHN 19:36, PSALMS 34:20, NOT A BONE OF HIS BODY COULD BE BROKEN.

JOHN 10:18 NO MAN TAKES MY LIFE FROM ME I LAY IT DOWN MYSELF.

JOHN 19:34 A SOLDIER WITH A SPEAR PIERCED HIS SIDE.

THE LAST EIGHT SAYING OF JESUS ON THE CROSS

1.) LUKE 23:34 Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

2.) LUKE 23:43 Today you shall be with me in paradise.

3.) JOHN 19:26 Woman, behold your son.

4.) JOHN 19:27 Behold your mother.

5.) MATTHEW 27:46 Eli, Eli lama sabachthani? That is to say, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

6.) JOHN 19:28 I thirst.

7.) JOHN 19:28 It is finished.

8.) LUKE 23:46 Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

parents be aware. the above thread has a very graphic and long Hebrew/Biblical description of the practice of crucifixion, with much more detail than gentiles ever see (usually). I had to read it in parts, a little at a time, to bear it. it pierces the soul.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard Jesus died from a broken heart.
Excuse my ignorance.

when the soldier pierced His Heart, >>

So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

Matthew 27:50-53
Amplified Bible (AMP)

50 And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.

51 And at once the curtain of the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth shook and the rocks were split.

52 The tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep in death were raised [to life];

53 And coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

i.e. no one could take His Life. no one could kill, murder, or execute Him. He gave up His Life at the appointed time, willingly, having suffered more than anyone before or since, more than anyone can imagine or dream in their worse nightmare.

and He is innocent.
