“Joseph was clearly the son of Jacob (Matthew 1:16, so this verse [Luke 3:23—says “son of Heli”] should be understood to mean “son-in-law of Heli.” Thus, the genealogy of Christ in Luke is actually the genealogy of Mary, while Matthew gives that of Joseph. Actually, the word “son” is not in the original, so it would be legitimate to supply either “son” or “son-in-law”

I find this topic fascinating, where the royal biblical genealogies branch out to and where history picks up. But people don't find this too interesting. Nevertheless, kingdoms can rise and fall based on the royal heir. Or I should say, the proper lineage of people verifies any Kingdom, so genealogists make sure they have the best information known (and are highly employed by royalty everywhere).

As for the branches of Jesus genealogy of the many lineages of Judah out there, Matthew gives his royal, legal lineage via Joseph directly to King David. This is the line de jure. This father-to-son lineage has breaks in it where important "branches" occurred to then dwell amongst the Gentiles. However, the rightful King had a curse placed on him, so how can Jesus be a legal heir of King David?

Well, Mary's lineage shows that Jesus was a blood son of King David. So he was a literal son of King David, but an adopted son by Joseph thereby being legal heir to the throne of King David later in the future.

As for the wording in Luke, it can be understood this way (my paraphrase in red brackets):

Continued.... Somehow the software on this forum messed things up so here is the quote: 23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, [Jesus was] being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, [but in fact Jesus] which was the son of Heli, 24 Which was the son of Matthat....
