Sex Before Marriage...

Me and my boyfriend have been searching for answers on this topic lately. We have both been raised that it is wrong before marriage but are wondering where that thought oringinated. We are looking for bible verses that state that it is wrong. We have found a few that might pretain to it but they either deal with sexual immorality or prostitution. But we can not find how sex before marriage plays into either of those topics. If you have any verses to help us it would be much appreciated. We are not doubting the Bible just searching for answers.

I'll allow someone else to give you the verses. But the marriage is SO much better if you wait. There's more meaning on an emotional level that will last a lifetime. And the commitment will become so much stronger and joyful.
There is much wisdom in God's Word. He wants the best for us.

Don't think that I am not human, I've been married 34 years, but my mind wonders all the times when it comes to sex ,I have always said no.

The idea of what a marriage is suppose to be is in Genesis 3 23-25.
You should read what JESUS says in Matthew 5- 27 and 28. Romans 13-13+14.
1 Thessaloians 4- 2-5. I had relations with my wife before marriage, it is sin. It takes a hard struggle to obstain, but that is what God wants us to do. However Satan lies to us about this all the time.

soulsearchers, there is not a passage in the bible that says word for word "You Shall Not have sex before marraige. It is a sin." There are also no passages in Scripture which say word for word "YHWH, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three persons of a trinitarian God," "Polygamy is a sin, don't do it," or "Gambling is a sin therefore thou shalt not go to Casinos." God didn't spell out every sin word for word, but He did give inspire passage that guide us in certain directions.

Here are a few passages which lead to the conclusion that pre-marital sex is wrong.

Exodus 20:14 is the verse from the ten commandments which says "Thou shall not commit Adultery."

That passage by itself just suggests that sex after marraige with anyone other than your spouse is wrong. However, Jesus expounded on this commandment and taght in Matthew 5:27-28 teaches that any man who looks on a woman lustfully commits adultery in his heart. Okay, so here we have lustful thoughts equaling adultery, so what can we define as lust?

Webster Dictionary has this for the first definition of lust: "personal inclination."

That's kind of general isn't it? Simple as personal inclination? I don't know what Christ's listeners would have thought when he taught this, and i doubt they had Webster's definition in mind, but just think of how this definition sheds some light on this subject.

If any man looks on a woman with personal inclination he commits adultery in his heart. That's a pretty broad range of things. Now, to avoid a legalist approach, let's just look at this in regards to sex. There are two reasons people have sex: procreation or someone's satisfaction, and in all reality even if the motive is procreation sex will result in personal satisfaction, even if it is temporary.

Now wait a second, does this mean even a married man and wife who have sex to enjoy intimacy together commit adultery? Not a chance. You see, the only times God does not relate sex to sin or evil is when the sex occurs with-in a marraige of a man a woman.

If you're looking for a passage which word for word says pre-marital sex is sin, you will not find it. However, when you look at passage that discuss sex overall, the only times sex is not associated with sin is when it occurs in a marriage between a man and woman.

Thanks Tim! Great post and good to see you here. If I may add to it... add coveting to the list of sins. If one doesn't consider sex before marriage a sin, you better well marry that person, because if you don't, then you just had sex with someone's future husband or wife. :o If that's not adultery, then it's covering. But, a sin with any other name, is still a sin. 8-)

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

If a person has sex before they are married the bed is defiled. Marriage and the intimate relationship that comes with marriage is blessed when the couple agrees to become one flesh and united in Matrimony.

Many people have sex before they are wed and sometimes pregnancy occurs. Many times for whatever reason people "break up" and the marriage never happens.

A man should save himself for his wife and a woman should save herself for her husband. A couple is not saving themselves if they have sex before marriage.

Fornication is a sin and unless a person is married they are commiting fornication if they engage in a sexual relationship.

The bible calls children born out of wedlock "illegitimate" although the real word starts with a b and ends with an d in the King James Bible.

We have become very "politically correct" even in the bible.

Women were considered "whores" in the Old Testament if they had sex outside of marriage and they didn't necessarily have to be in business to be called one.

The brothers of Tamar slew the Hivites because Shechem had sex with their sister before marriage. The reason is because she was treated as a whore.

Genesis 34:31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

The bible is very clear that sex outside of marriage is forbidden by God.

In the OT there are examples that as soon as a man and a woman had a sexual relationship that meant that they had become man and wife.

Genesis 24:67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

Having sex before marriage is "putting the cart before the horse".
