Tradition, where is it's place in the church?

Many church founders have their teachings at the forefront of their church.

Hopefully, they are sound biblical doctrines.

But many churches add their traditions to scripture.

Does that change scripture?

Good question.

Sound traditional observations may never have meant to change how we view scripture.

Others, well....

How important it is to know the Word of God.

Otherwise, we will believe anything that anyone teaches us.

And that's not good, is it?

But tradition has it's values.

Uh, what are they?

There is a distinction between exegesis (getting the meaning out of the text) and eisegesis (putting meaning into it).

There's a light bulb joke about lutheran protestants.

Q: "How many Lutherans does it take to change a lightbulb?"
A: "CHANGE??!!??" :shocked!

Tradition is important for many, because they expect to find continuity in their churches, especially when the world around them changes and seems to be less and less predictable.
But my church (well not the actual church I attend, we are doing pretty well, but the German Evangelical Church aka the lutheran protestants, that my church belongs to) keep losing members because they have neither innovation and originality, nor do they guard their values. Our church has lost its fire and the tradition is like conserving the ashes.
So I'm not very happy about tradition. Tradition is nice, but it shouldn't be above faith.

I don't think there is a problem with tradition, it only becomes a problem when people claim their tradition scriptural and endorsed by God for salvation.

Claudya: there is also the perspective of what Scripture teaches. This in fact surpasses both tendencies to change and tendencies to tradition.

Know the same joke, but the group changing the light bulb are addicts. Then again, look who you're talking to. :biggrin

Sola Scriptura. However, traditions are nice, and make people secure in their worship. Just as long as they don't assume the traditions are commanded by the Bible. That's the mistake many make.
