I don't necessarily agree. I believe it is actually beneficial to a point to be exposed to some germs. If our bodies are shielded from germs, they won't develop the ability to fend them off and we could instead become even more sick when it happens. It's the premise behind vaccinations. When we are vaccinated, we are given an injection of the virus or bacteria that causes the malady, although scientifically altered so it is in a weakened state. This allows our bodies to develop the needed antibodies to fight the infection when it is encountered in full strength. It's sort of like getting a copy of the playbook from the opposing team before a competition.

hand washing is a big, big deal. just getting surgeons to wash their hands and sterilize their equipment -alone- has saved untold lives over more than 1 century. check it out:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignaz_Semmelweis

now, of course, there are travel size hand sanitizers and such to use. with the oral care...2x daily is a minimum, and its been shown effective in reducing dental problems. i aim for 3-4, but...that's more personal preference (plus my lifestyle allows it) than anything else. if its like many other treatments, i imagine there's a point of 'diminishing returns,' as in...amazing benefits at 2x daily, less pronounced additional benefits at 3, so on and so forth.

I feel like washing my hands a lot is a pretty big deal for me. I get into a lot of different house to work and...some are not very sanitary. (I also have booties so not to track in on peoples nice floors but I also use them in nasty houses so I don't track home, lol.

I believe it is actually beneficial to a point to be exposed to some germs.

Research suggests that it is beneficial for youngsters to be exposed to some germs, so that they produce a variety of antibodies. Its the opposite for the elderly, who are better off minimizing unnecessary exposure to germs. There is a reason flu vaccines for the elderly have 4 times the dose that is given to non elderly. The elderly are better off getting their antibody production from inert germs in vaccines.

Good idea to wash hands before eating. Also, whenever you are exposed to germs, like shaking hands with someone who has a cold.

Yeah I know that and sorry for the delayed response but I was at Yoga class. Anyways, it appears that more responses to this topic have been added and I know that it is very important and healthy to wash your hands. (And I know that I don't do it as much as I should,.. but before eating and after using the bathroom should be enough in my mind unless you're sick or you're a doctor or deal with food or something.

I don't think that it really matters whether or not you do it every time you cough, blow your nose (unless you have boogers coming out onto your hand or something) or pet one of your animals.

unless you are in Afghanistan, parasites etc galore. I have had one. seen a tape worm six feet long removed from a four year old.

Every post here seems to be correct to me. We just have to use common sense without getting obsessed. Cleanliness is very important but obsession is not healthy either.
ive seen people use paper towels they used after washing there hands used to open bathroom door . but they have issue pushing the doors open to the cafeteria and then eating. i wash my hand open the door go about my business

Haji squat, they do use the tp If they have them ,but squat ,rather then using a seat is better on the intestine

Having been a teacher, I can vouch for the importance of frequent handwashing. BTW, some pathogens have started evolving resistance to hand sanitizer.

They can't do it to soap ,since soap basically removes them from your hands.

Research indicates that 1 in 4 bulk refillable public soap dispensers are contaminated. Might want to bring your own soap from home.

It doesn't matter that much, since the soap washes pretty much everything off the skin, when you rinse off the soap. Real soap (fats and oils treated with alkaline chemicals) will disrupt bacterial cell membranes, but don't do much to many viruses. Other than wash them down the drain, that is.

It doesn't matter that much...

Carrie A. Zapka et al said:
These results demonstrate that washing with contaminated soap from bulk-soap-refillable dispensers can increase the number of opportunistic pathogens on the hands and may play a role in the transmission of bacteria in public settings.

Research suggests that some caution may be merited.

Gram-negative bacteria on the hands of students and staff increased by 1.42 log10 CFU per hand (26-fold) after washing with soap from contaminated bulk-soap-refillable dispensers.

That is, washers had 26 times as much gram-negative bacteria on their hands than they did before they washed them. Contaminated soap is to be avoided, where practical. That is, unless I misunderstood the study.

Properly training the janitorial staff would protect the students.

Although this is a rather old thread I discovered something really rather interesting today.

I wash my hands all the time... But I still get sick. I'm so tired of being sick.. This is the second time this year and it's now moved into my lungs.

I'm so tired of being sick all the time...
