I wanted to seek the opinions of people on a subject which is of great importance to me.

Do we accept the evidence that human activities are having a significant impact on climate change? Indeed, is it our duty to take a more responsible attitude towards our environment?

Should we be limiting our use of cars, switching to renewable energy sources and reforesting? Or has this threat been blown out of all proportion?

hi. i think it -is- a very serious problem....

but i think the focus should be more on getting massive corporations to clean up their act, rather than focusing on Joe and Jane Middle America.

I have heard some people endorse President Trump's assertion that it is a scaremongering hoax. But others who accept the scientific evidence and say that we are one of the most recklessly irresponsible generations ever to walk the face of the Earth.

climate change has been ongoing...we're just reaching a point at which the gov't needs to exert some -serious- control over corporations. i personally think a top down approach--first the mega corporations, eventually everyday people-- would be most effective. but that's probably just me...

I don't think it's just you. But I think it would be very, very difficult to convince some the climate change deniers to give up their vast interests in fossil fuels...

My opinion....

First, your poll isn't complete. I believe human activity is a factor but not directly responsible.

Every creature that walks, flies, crawls, swims, or slithers is a factor. Everything that belongs to the plant kingdom is a factor. All living things are carbon-based and they all consume and digest food made up of carbon-based organisms releasing greenhouse gases by their waste products and then they all eventually die and decompose, releasing greenhouse gases like carbon-dioxide and methane to name a couple.

Everything that burns such as wild fires, volcanos, internal combustion engines, heating system furnaces, smelting and other manufacturing processes, welding, and so forth are all a factor. The by-product of combustion includes greenhouse gases.

Everything we do that utilizes power from fossil fuels such as coal, fuel oil, diesel fuel, kerosene, airplane fuel, gasoline, jet fuel, rocket fuel, LP gas, natural gas and others are a factor. This includes the production of electricity since about 63% of our total electrical supply comes from fossil fuel sources.

But it doesn't stop there. Electricity generated from so-called green sources like wind, hydro, and solar are also a factor. Why? because we still use fossil fuels to run the equipment that mine the ores and melt and shape them to produce the raw materials used to create the structures and equipment, distribution lines, and so forth as well as service the systems. Windmills, solar panels, and hydro-electric generators are made of metals and plastics that we have to fabricate from mined ores and oils.

Here's another myth....
Even if one accepts the idea that we are the most predominant cause and the result is the earth's temperature rising, to think we could stop or reverse the process is ludicrous at best. The rise has started and to stop the process would require holding the greenhouse gases at some defined maximum world-wide and to actually reverse the process would require lowering the atmospheric greenhouse gases world-wide.

Neither of these solutions is even remotely possible to have the favored results in the next 12 years as AOC proposes, especially if only done here in the US.

Does this mean we shouldn't do our best to live with our environment in mind? Absolutely not! For God gave us the command to be fruitful and multiply, subdue and have dominion over the earth. We should do so with the love and care that He has for us. Each of us needs to do our part. Reduce waste, find ways to obtain what we need with efficiency, use less power when possible, turn off the lights, radios, stereos, and televisions when they are not in use. Combine trips so we don't spend so much time on the road. Carpool back and forth to work or take the bus, walk, or ride a bike. Recycle what we can. Use a little common sense in all we do.

Why does it have to start with corporations and end with everyday people? And why does it require government intervention, especially with everyday people?

In my last post I listed a few things we can do individually. Do we need someone to tell us to do this or can we just do it because it is the right thing to do? Don't wait for the mandate. Do it now!

We are spoiled. Lower your heat setting in the winter a few degrees and throw on warmer clothing. Raise the thermostat setting in the heat of summer a few degrees and put up with a little discomfort. Fifty years ago, AC was a luxury not many homes had and yet they survived. If you have space, grow a garden so you can reduce the number of trips to the grocery store and at the same time feed yourself with fresh vegetables instead of processed ones. It would be better for your overall health. Replace those incandescent light bulbs with LED lights to reduce electrical demand. Slow down on the highway, decelerate earlier to stops, and accelerate more gradually to improve fuel economy. It only adds a few seconds of time to the trip but it saves greenhouse gas emissions and probably reduces wear and tear on your vehicle at the same time. Ride a bike to work if you don't live too far away. It is not inconceivable to expect an average speed of about 15mph so a 5-mile trip would only take about 20 minutes. Probably faster than you do right now if you have traffic to deal with. Besides, we are a nation that needs the exercise.

Just a few ideas that come to mind.

the two aren't mutually exclusive. each individual can and should do what he can to reduce his 'carbon foot print,' as i believe it is called. having said that...

think about the quick, massive impact stringent gov't regulations wuld have, more or less from day 1.

What about the rest of the world. The US is only a small part.

I also don't think we should focus just on carbon footprint. Everything needs to be considered.

Do you know what the next crisis will be? I'm betting it will be water. Here in MN the aquifer is known to have gradually lowered over time. Yes, a lot of finger-pointing is directed to the farmers with their tiling and irrigation.

Tiling diverts water that would normally soak into the soil to replenish the aquifer out to the ditches, streams, rivers, and eventually to the oceans. Then they draw from the aquifer to irrigate the land. These to combined gives them greater control over the soil moisture and that promotes improved fertility and higher yields so they can get more with less and not go belly-up.

But we must also point fingers at ourselves. How much water does it take to supply a city with millions? In the last 50 years the average American home has doubled in size while the average American family is dropped to almost half. That means the average American occupies about 4x the space. Well, every building, parking area, roadway, sports complex, etc. that we build takes land away that would normally have allowed water to soak in and replenish the aquifer and diverts it to our storm systems and then on to streams, rivers, and eventually the oceans.

Yup. Water will be our next crisis.

I had a feeling this would generate some useful and lively discussion. There's a thought-provoking book by David Wallace-Wells called "The Uninhabitable Earth". Fascinating, but be warned, it's not for the fainthearted. A truly terrifying, though enlightening read.

Or has this threat been blown out of all proportion?
Not only has the threat been blown out of proportion, it has become a deceptive tool in the hands of the globalist elites to manipulate everyone else and to bring all into submission to their whims (while grabbing some more tax revenue for their own personal coffers).

The same people who tell you to limit the use of your car and buy a tiny vehicle are the ones who fly around the world in their private jets for their so-called *conferences* on global warming, while they roll on the floor laughing at the gullible and useful idiots who believe them.

Something which North Americans need to understand is that the countries with the largest land masses in the world -- Russia and its satellites, China, and India -- do not give a hoot about climate change, or global warming, or polluting the atmosphere. And they too laugh at the gullible Westerners who have no clue about what is really going on.

Just like the Mueller Witch Hunt, Climate Change is a hoax which should have been exposed right at the start.

I personally have not jumped on the climate change bandwagon. I just feel we have a responsibility to treat the world with respect and care as much as practical. We live here therefore we will have an impact of one type or another. To think we don't is to place our head in the sand.

Think of it this way. If I go into my garage, close all the doors, and start my car running, eventually, the toxic exhaust will deplete the oxygen in the room and I will suffocate for lack of breathable air.

Our world is like an enclosed room, albeit, a much larger room than a carport or garage. The more populated we become the more we will impact the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink and sooner or later it will impact our lives more and more. Probably not in my lifetime or yours but eventually it will likely happen.

At the same time, the earth is amazingly capable of handling many things and there are cycles. According to scientific research, the earth has experienced extremes before including major periods of low temperature (ice age) and much, much higher levels of CO2 gas.

The earth was designed by our creator and He instructed us to be fruitful and multiply. Is it not possible that He has designed the earth to be able to handle our existence here until He returns?

But I think it would be very, very difficult to convince some the climate change deniers to give up their vast interests in fossil fuels...
People are being fed a bunch of lies, and they are swallowing them hook, line, and sinker. The whole climate-change/global warming myth is "junk science". Climates have changed ever since creation, and not because of human activity.

1. CARBON DIOXIDE IS ESSENTIAL FOR PLANTS

"Plants require carbon dioxide for growth. It is a necessary ingredient for photosynthesis in which the plant creates glucose and structural carbon that forms the plant body. According to Nature Education, approximately 96 percent of the typical dry plant mass is due to compounds created through photosynthesis using carbon dioxide.
While the human-caused increase in carbon dioxide receives the blame for global warming, it also impacts plant growth. Experiments by Nature Education show most of the benefits to be positive in plant growth. Increasing carbon dioxide concentration increases the rate of growth for most, but not all plants. In addition, the amount of fruit the plant produces increases. The plants absorb carbon dioxide through the stoma of the leaves. However, opening the stoma increases transpiration, or water loss, for the plant. Most plants regulate the time the stoma are opened to conserve water. In atmospheres with greater concentrations of carbon dioxide, the plant is able to absorb more of the gas while still limiting water loss, increasing growth rate. Growth of plants depends on more than just carbon dioxide. The plants need minerals and water to sustain the growth process. An increase in carbon dioxide concentrations in the air does not necessarily mean these other requirements are available. Thus, while increasing carbon dioxide encourages greater growth, it does not guarantee it..."

2. CARBON DIOXIDE IS A VERY MINOR COMPONENT OF AIR
It is only 0.04% by volume. Nitrogen is the major component, then oxygen. CO2 is also soluble in water and is found in all water sources.

3. GASOLINE PRODUCES MAINLY CO2 AND H2O
Gasoline consists of hydrocarbons, and when they are burned they produced heat, CO2 and H20. Since CO2 is beneficial to plants, it is used up as it is generated.

4. IT IS ASSUMED THAT SUBTERRANEAN OIL IS FROM FOSSILS
That could be another myth, just like the myth of Evolution

"Last week new NASA photographs proved methane lakes exist on Saturn’s moon, Titan, showing that such hydrocarbons (or so-called ‘fossil fuels’) are seemingly plentiful in our solar system. This startling discovery turns on its head the long-held western belief that petroleum is a limited resource, because it is primarily derived (we had been told) from the fossilized remains of dead dinosaurs and rotted carbon-based vegetation..."

5. THE GLOBALIST ELITES HAVE NO PROBLEM JETTING AROUND
The same people who tell you to use your bicycle are the ones who jet around the world in their private jets and travel around in their luxury limousines. More Left-Liberal hypocrisy.

Well, yes and no. The climate change threat that man has put forth is a hoax, however, the effect of man's activities (sin) does affect the earth and the earth is groaning and reacting to it.

Make sense?

I would not be surprised if plant growth world-wide has been affected by the added CO2 levels. We certainly benefit by added oxygen at times. Pro football players use it during games for added endurance. I would expect that plants may grow larger and more dense and that in itself will consume more. Unfortunately, we are also cutting down many of our rain forests for farming. While young plants consume far more CO2 than mature ones, the shear size difference may play a role too.

...the effect of man's activities (sin) does affect the earth and the earth is groaning and reacting to it.
This is correct and biblical. Adam's disobedience brought a curse upon creation, and its effects are all around us. So the earth is waiting for its deliverance, which will be when the New Heavens and the New Earth are established (Romans 8:18-25).
