I have had one lone mouse move in! He is very smart! I bought regular mousetraps, old styly and put several atround his haunts, and he wouldn't touch any of them! Peanut butter or cheese.

I like DIY things so I went online and googled, and I built an electric mousetrap and it was nice and I expected it to work. I put oatmeal inside of it and a little bit of peanut butter on the outside and left it for a couple weeks. (I read that mice like oatmeal and other dry grains but had never tried it before? Do it work?)
3 weeks set up and hot and he would not touch it. Too smart I think. I see him sometimes and he appears full grown.

So off to youtube and found these 5 gallon bucket traps that the guys were making and he said he caught 10 mice in it, so I thought it looked good and built one. the first one had a platform which would dump the mouse into the bucket of water, he wouldn't go for that, so I reworked it to have a piece of 3/4" pvc pipe which spanned the inner diameter of the bucket and spread peanut butter on the middle of it. So when the mouse walks out onto the pvc pipe, it spins and dumps him into the bucket. I tried that for about 10 days, and even had a nice little wood rampthat he could walk up it to the bucket. A little PB on the bottom & middle of the ramp to get him started, and he ate that but didn't go up and fall in. This little mouse is smart!

I have to get him. I moved into a house whoich already had a lot of mice one time in Colorado, and thought, so what? So there is a few mice and didn't worry about it. A few months later that house was infested! I could hear them in the drop ceiling above the family room and it was bad. (My dog Riggs actually caught 5 of them!) but it wasn't enough, so I had to break down and buy D_Con poison and after a long stern discussion with Riggs to not eat it or any mice, I swear he understood and when he would catch one after that, he would bring it to me and be gently and not bite them. It worked, but I do not want to use poison this time.

How do I outsmart a smart mouse? I am out of ideas.

I use the plastic bucket method outside in the summer for chipmunks and have found dead mice in it too. I fill the bucket less than half full of water and put a wood plank up to it. take a plastic coffee lid and put some bird seed on it and a thin trail up the plank. They will try to jump on the plastic lid and drown.

In my camper I use lavender beads as the mice hate lavender. Just make sure it's only lavender and not mixed with any other scent.

If all else fells get a cat. I've been mouse free for a year and a half with my mouser. It is strange though that it's not going for the peanut butter.

I'm glad that our cat is a real mouser as we've had a mouse in our house more than once. We've always caught it with our traps before she could get it but we already know that she is a mouser because of the way that she plays with her toy mice. :) I love her little hunting noises and the meows that she makes while she's playing with them. :lol

If you can get a cat. Otherwise, I am not sure how much of a help I will be.

We had a smart mouse about a month ago. We got the classic snap traps, but it would lick the peanut butter off and take the cheese without snapping the trap. We were a bit frustrated, but kept trying the snaps and changed how we applied it.

We wedged some cheese into that little hole on the bait end. The mouse still got it. We decided not to put bait back on the traps because we figured the mouse was seeing them as a food source and they still have odors from cheese and peanut butter. I saw it scurry around the room and run over one mouse trap very skillfully without it snapping. Then it went onto the next one under a chair and SNAP. It looked too hard for the food. Simply placing the bait on there wasn't good enough. I heard some people get a tiny bit of a cotton ball and mix it in the peanut butter. The idea is they fuss with the cotton getting caught in their teeth. Someone said crush a Reese's pieces candy and stick it under that hook like piece on the bait end or stuff some into that hole. You could also cut a sliver of a peanut and stick it through the hole. Might work better to soak the peanut first.

If we didn't catch the mouse, I was going to try getting a shoebox, cutting out a small square on the top, gluing paper to cover the hole lightly and place bait on top so the mouse falls in the shoebox. It seems clever. Just make sure to leave a ramp for the mouse to climb up there.

We were determined not to use poison because of the kids. It was a smart mouse, though. Took about a week to get him.

The trick with peanut butter is to put just a tiny amount and smooth it out very thin. That way when they lick it they will set the trap off as they are basically liking the little tray.

We lived near Addicks Dam resevior in Houston and it was like living in the country right in the city. The bad thing was snakes, possum, deer ,coyote, roaches, ducks, raccoons liked it too. I couldn't use poison or conventional mousetraps in the house due to the cats. Yep. our cats were useless. They would catch the mouse but would let it go so they could play. We found a glue trap. It is the most cruel trap I ever saw, but they work.
Outside, we didn't have to worry about mice because the chickens made short work of any mouse who dared enter the yard and ate them whole.

Btw, just so everyone knows who doesn't already know,.. if you have and use a cat to catch your mice, you want to make sure that they don't actually catch the mouse. Otherwise there's a risk of them getting worms.

Unfortunately worms are a concern usually if they ear the mouse. Some people that have outdoor/barn cats will deworm them from time to time using food-grade Diatamaceous Earth in their food since it is not harmful and kills parasites. It doesn't seem like they have issues with worms, but I have not tried this for myself. So I guess if you find out your cat ate a mouse, you can do this.

I don't think our cats ever caught a mouse, but they were invaluable because they would catch scorpions and centipedes that came inside.

Yeah we don't have to worry too much about worms with our cat. She came to us as a stray so we originally did, but she's an indoor cat because of two reasons. The most important reason is that even though there are quite a few outdoor cats around here, I'm always afraid that I'm going to see one get hit by a car because the streets are way too busy and the cars don't always stop unfortunately. :sad

The second reason is that we had a cat run away a few years ago and we really didn't want to take a chance of losing another one. :crying I still really miss her and I've hoped and I've prayed about the possibility of her coming back, but at this point if she's still alive I just hope and pray that she's happy, loved, and safe somewhere, :) and if she isn't still alive, I hope and pray that she didn't suffer. It's still really difficult not to have closure though. :sad

A version of a bug zapper on steroids...mice go in and get cooked...and don't come out.

That's horrible!! :sad Funny, :lol but still horrible. :sad Man!! You got me so confused that I'm even confusing myself XDD!! I don't know whether to like you or hate you right now! :hysterical So I think that I will just choose to love you unconditionally instead. :) No matter how sick minded you are. :rofl2

He wants ideas...he didn't say good ideas.

Knotical did have a point though. We've caught a couple mice that we didn't know we caught and it stunk up to Heaven so much so that all of the angels probably had to stick a clothespin on their nose. If a mouse was zapped like that, the devil would probably get a new bright idea of torturing the lost souls in Hell. LOL!!! I hope that wasn't too far, but I'm pretty sure God gave you a funny bone when He created you so I think that I'm safe. :wink

True Story: When my wife and I were first married a mouse apparently died underneath our bed. Sure the room had an odd smell for a little while, but it went away and we didn't think much of it. Later one of was cleaning out from under the bed and found what we thought was a big dust bunny. Nope. Still had the fur on it.

That's nasty and completely incredible at exactly the same time. :eek2Anyways Edward, you might want to rethink getting a cat, they can be one mean felines when it comes to chasing mice. :wink

Understandable. When I lived back home my parents lived in a neighborhood with neighbors around them. Our outdoor/indoor cat lived 14 years - never was hit by a car or had any major injuries. She passed away from kidney failure.

We had another cat for about a year and my dad thought he should be able to venture outside, but he was usually to go out and refused. We also figured that cat may have had bad eyesight, but we aren't 100% sure. When that cat went outside, he didn't come in that night, we worried, and the morning of my birthday before I had a college class, our cat hobbled in limping. Back leg completely broken and jaw crooked and was put down while I was at class. It was a rough birthday. Vet was sure he had been hit by a car.

With out cats, we kept them indoors since we were usually in apartments or in areas where we were afraid they might get eaten by coyotes or hurt by neighbors dogs. We did let one of them out a few times and she loved climbing trees...she was so much happier outdoors. I wish I could have given her more outdoor time. I hope whoever adopted her if she was adopted is able to give her outdoor time.

It always depends on living situation and anything can happen.

I made one of these already and it turned out very nice and he would have to get inside to get to the food or get cooked. He would not get in to it. Too smart.

And I wont get a kitty cat, I just wont. I have nothing against cats, I'm just a dog kind of guy and always have been.

But last night was the last straw! That lone mouse is getting bold. He came into my bedroom and climbed up onto my nightstand which is right beside my bed...while I slept...and ate my cookies! That is going too far and I am out for revenge.

I forgive him, but I can't let it go. He has to want to move away or he has to give up the ghost. That is all there is too it.

He's wise to conventional snap traps, he was wise to my home made electric zap trap, he wouold not let himself get trapped in my 5 gal bucket water trap...and I even tried mixing some Baking Soda and Flour together and setting little dishes of that around for him with some water near (I read that Mice can not burp or fart so the baking soda expands to a gas inside them and they die...I never heard that before but was willing to try...He didn't like it. I saw one disturbance in it, where he put his snoot in it to see what it was but he left it alone and untouched after that)...

So nothing has worked so far. What I need, is a type of home made trap that he has never seen before and will not suspect.

I have one idea. To climb up onto my nightstand, he had to climb up the cord for the lamp. I think I will (unplug) the lamp and make some grab points on it to help him climb...but they will be hot and 120v so when he grabs both sides, he will (hopefully) die from electrocution. I'll do this while I wait on ideas from my Brothers & Sisters here on the board. And I'll leave some real good smelling goodies on the nightstand that he can smell and want some...

Havent any of you all here made a home made mouse trap before of your own design? I need something a little out of the ordinary and not common that this mouse has seen before in the neighborhood, ya know?

That sneaky little devil! :hips In all honesty that sounds a bit cruel to me though, maybe not inhumane but still cruel. :sad
