In Luke 10 we have an expert in the law giving Jesus a litmus test as he questions Jesus on his doctrine. Jesus, the expert asks, what is the greatest commandment?

Jesus passes the test, he agrees with the doctrine of the Pharisee. But wanting to justify himself, the teacher of the law probes further and asks, who is my neighbor.

We want to know who our neighbor is, don't we? We want to know who we have to love, and who we can walk on by and leave them to waste. And so Jesus tells the story of the good Samaritan.

But here is the twist, Jesus isn't too concerned with defining who is in and who is out...

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Jesus tells us to be a good neighbor to anyone in need.

I especially love the point He made as the two Jews went past their own race while a Samaritan is the one who helped him. In these days of the kingdom, where Christianity is of both Jew and Gentile, the equivalent parable would draw the distinction between Christian and non-Christian. So we could say that it would be Jesus telling a pastor about a Christian who was beaten and robbed and other Christians passed by him until a "despised atheist" stopped and took care of him. In my experience of Christians, yes that is a most likely reality, because Christianity isn't defined by the badge of identity or the collection of beliefs a person has, but the spirit that is of love. Simply, a fact of truth is that some Christians don't have spirit of love and some non-Christians do.

Just so we don't have to wonder or question; everyone is our neighbor.

Zechariah 3:10
In that day, saith the Lord of hosts,
shall ye call every man his neighbour
under the vine and under the fig tree.

.. Italy, hmmm, that's a really nice idea! .. what's it like for an English traveller over there? Do the people know much English? .. are they happy to speak it? I'm a bit restricted to travelling in countries where I can speak naturally :)

English is spoken all over Europe. Kids study at least two languages in school -- unlike in the states. And, yes, they LOVE to practice their English; so come on over...so much to see here.

What you have deduced is ok, in the most general sense of the word, because all inhabitants of earth are living in a neighbourhood: all creatures are a neighbour. However, I wouldn't have accepted your quote as support if it were necessary, because it is a bad translation, seemingly intentional. Every other translation of that verse says a very different thing than what you have said by it.

Nevertheless, there are people in this world who are so foreign to me, in fact they are strangers. I do not find an opportunity to love them as myself because they do not resemble anything like the people of my home (Philippians 3:20). There is other scripture telling us to love others in a different capacity though, even describing how we should love an enemy (give him bread if he is hungry, and water if he is thirsty - ie: not meat and milk, as you would if you were loving them as yourself).

Well, if Lord willing, it sounds great! I went to Germany for a week, and it wasn't too bad, most people know some English but they also don't like that visitors are forcing them to use it in their own country where it isn't the official language. I found Turkey much harder though. We used Google Translate for basically everything, and that's a great tool, but it's also a problem because saying one simple thing can cause a big ten minute explanation to wind up wishing I hadn't said it! (You know, just small chatter that we take for granted every day).

So it sounds great! .. I'll think about it some more. What are your recommendations as a local? I am travelling not so much as a tourist, but to see what life is like in other places :)

Is that a real thing?! .. rofl, it's just a completely serious mismatch of era's! (And if it weren't for the photo at 22 seconds I'd have thought they just had bad fashion sense). There is something about what they are doing there that seems, hmmm, ... what shall I say, "not quite right"? ... hmmm.

Oh, haha, I've just been looking it up. I see it's from the 70s-80s, so that's that lol. Somehow I thought it was a present day thing doing a spoof of the 60's mannerisms. The manners are much different these days. I think it was the tie clip, it looked like a lapel mic the first time, and the haircut, the house construction, the film colours, it all looked like a modern production of a past era (looking on my little mobile phone screen). So that's what threw me off, I thought someone was trying to revive the golden days. Also I noticed the photo changes every time, so I guess somebody just wanted to share their favourite ghost picture that day and it's just a fluke that you picked that one so I'd be tempted to say something about it.

Bit of a shame it's a past thing, I like that he is showing the kids discipline by getting changed to indoor clothes right away. There's not much of that good role model on TV anymore. Especially for the grown ups, where it really has power. I don't even watch TV nowadays, it's all so dark, sinister, evil or sick. But if they made TV like they once did, I'd enjoy it :)


This video is by the man who painted the avatar icon I chose. He used to do a show where he would teach the art of wet canvas painting. It was actually quite popular, so when they say "it's like watching paint dry" you know they've never watched Bob Ross painting! ;)

Yeah, Ikr? I used to watch that show all the time when I was little. Now Pappy has his own YouTube channel and his real name is Michael Cariglio, and yes he's saved. :) I only recently found that out. I was really happy when I did find out though, but I've always known that he was an incredible artist. :biggrin2 (I can't draw very much at all lol! :lol)

I used to draw horses when I was a teenager. Sure wish we had video like this back then!

Yes but not very well lol! :lol Or at least not like Pappy/Mike. Which by the way, doesn't he look and sound an awful lot like Papa Zoom!? :hysterical I swear he could be like his doppelganger or something! LOL!!! I love the thing that he said at the end of every Pappyland episode though. There's no limitation to our imaginations. :)
