coffee beans, of course. im -not- a foodie or an amateur gourmet, but...loves me some arabic. I just discovered the McCafe stuff for home use. Crazy, but true fact: its 100% arabic, comes in a big ole canister, and its a tad bit -cheaper- than the 100% arabic stuff I was getting at ALDI, feeling all frugal. back to WalMart for -this- dewd...

anyway, I of course got to thinking: why bother with robusta? so I did some research...and by "research," I mean I consulted The Google. Turn out...robusta makes a mean espresso. Also, robusta bean have a -much- higher concentration of important antioxidants. Having said that...

i dont like robusta. LOL. And...arabica beans provide loads of antioxidants, too (i also take antioxidants, which I think is a great idea for everyone...just putting that out there...).

So...for those of you who are into these sorts of things...preferences? favorite coffee blends? I'll be honest...Starbucks makes some fine blends, like that one with a dragon on the label. Yeah...good times. But spendy, for me.

ok. thanks, y'all. :)

I usually have a hard time distinguishing one type of coffee from another. Arabica vs robusta, decaf vs caffeinated, and brand names. Having said that, I do find that I lean toward the darker roasts though and I do prefer fresh ground but because of the higher cost for the beans, which I don't understand, I reserve the fresh ground for the weekends and use pre-ground during the week.

im not at all a foodie or a coffee snob, but 100% arabica (pre-ground, for me) is tasty (to me)...tastier than a lot of other things out there, anyway.

this mccafe stuff is my new obsession. the price at my local walmart for a big canister is right in line with the old time stand bys (folgers, etc.), and its 100% arabica. for a while there, I was shopping at ALDI, thinking i was getting bargains (turns out...not really...sad times...), and they have their own 100% Arabica blends. the "German Roasted" was alright, but some of the other ones...questionable, let's put it that way.

Sometimes my parents get 8 o clock coffee, and they make a 100% arabica blend. its OK, but...for the $$$, I think I'd just go for the McCafe, now. I don't get it...maybe is their roasting process?

The pricier stuff...well, starbucks makes some really good blends. I'll just go ahead and say that, LOL. when i was doing my own cold brew, I'd buy the beans and grind them to the right texture and...yeah. now, of course, one can get cold brew concentrate at walmart and a lot of other stores (but -not- ALDI...sigh...), so...whatevs. The Dunkin Donuts blend is tasty, mellow, and distinctive, but...it requires a whole, whole lot of coffee, DIY, to get the taste...which drives up the $$$$ to starbuck's level (fun how that works).

I read a little fluff "news" piece....coffee is one of the top sources of antioxidants for a big segment of America. Isn't that crazy?

I quit buying Starbucks.
Their CEO is decidedly and unashamedly anti-Christian.
So... even if I like their coffee. I refuse to support him.

Coffee is one of my hobbies (as is reading all of your posts).
I worked in the coffee business for a roaster.
Now, retired, I'm the roaster.
I buy green beans online and roast myself.
I have a quality commercial roaster, though small.
I buy from a roaster in Tampa, their quality and prices are the best.
Robusta coffee is more acidic, so it should never taste as good as arabica coffee.
I notice Folgers and others are now offer Columbian arabica coffee.
It is good, these companies need to keep up with the times.
Dunkin Donuts is best if it is a dark roast.
My favorite coffees:
Columbian
Yemen
Kenya AA
Ethiopian
Mocha Java
Sumatra
Guatamala
Costa Rican

I think Hawaiian and Jamaican Blue are over priced

Coffee blends have specifications they go by.
If the specs are off, the coffee won't taste the same

Not all arabica is the same
There is the stuff they sweep off the floor at the end of the day
Think about that when you compare blends in a store

I understand there are a couple different processes used to develop decaffeinated coffee. Can you explain those differences and offer your opinion about which is better? Also, is there some way for the end consumer, such as myself, to find out which process was used? Thanks.

I'm waiting for the answer too.
Also, I seem to be able to tell if a coffee is decaf....
I wonder if it's just my imagination?

The only way I can tell is a couple hours after having a couple cups of regular coffee I'll be dealing with heartburn. The funny thing is, when I searched the web for side effects of too much decaffeinated coffee, the first one listed is usually heartburn because decaf still contains the acids. I never get bothered with heartburn if I drink decaffeinated coffee though. I don't get it.

Is it heartburn?
I don't drink regular coffee because of a heart problem I had back in '94. Didn't have ANY coffee for about two years and then I gradually started to drink decaf.

Regular coffee makes my heart speed up.
Maybe you're mistaking that with heartburn?

not sure, but i think they can either use chemical solvents or a water process.
I think this is right.
I think the french came up with the water method.
It should say on the can what method is used.

I try to stay away from chemicals but what good does it do?
I found out about two or three weeks ago that the pasta I buy has chemicals in it. It's from Canada and the force the growth of the wheat for the flour that's used to make it.

It's in everything....

It's definitely heartburn. When I am with friends and I know I will likely be drinking regular coffee, I make sure to keep a few antacids handy. Except for the heartburn, caffeine has never bothered me or affected me physically. Never had any issues with sleeping or getting anxious or jittery from it. Did no good to keep me awake or help me feel alert.

Hmmm. Interesting. I was exactly like you before the heart thing.
It was not caused by coffee, BTW.
And it never happened again...thank you God.

Having read through the site, my first reaction is to expect the water process to be best. I have never seen any information on the labels to explain how the coffee is decaffeinated. Maybe I need to look closer.

I think the caffeine makes my heart beat fast.
If I'm too sleepy, my heart beats fast. Or too tired.
I don't like the feeling.

I'm so used to the decaf I don't even notice the difference anymore.
I love cappuccino....I order it any time of the day....even when it's not appropriate/yes, there's an appropriate time to order cappuccio in Italy.

Only in the morning....never after a meal.
And this is what it's supposed to look like:

I think it would be great to be able to taste real Italian cappuccino. Do you think you could send me one?
