Before people start quoting me stuff like Bride, Guardian, Whitecross etc let me just add i've got well over 100 "Christian Metal" CDs and about twice as many secular. I tend to listen to mostly secular stuff (i.e Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray to name a few) simply because I find the quality of the music to be far superior. I've been a Christian 18 years and have come to realize the music you listen to does have an effect on your level of spirituality. Being a person who's had a lot of "stuff" to work through I have often wondered to what degree music reinforces a Christians worldly patterns of behaviour. Mind you, when I am feeling really oppressed i'll listen to a bit of praise music but find i need to go back to some (secular) quality metal after a (short) while. I've found that the recent handful of Christian metal purchases i've made lately have been either low in quality or low in spiritual content (and usually not cheap). Is there a Christian equivalent to Blind Guardian out there?

Not sure what Blind Guardian sounds like...is there anywhere online I can hear soundclips?

Here's a list of some bands you may like...I say "may" because some are goth/industrial sounding and some are just 'metal'...not sure what your particular style is.

I've heard Paramaceum and Seventh Angel the others are new to me. I actually used to like seventh Angel many years ago when they were around. If the others are "Death" metal (if you can have such a Christian equivalent) I would not like them. I'm more into European Power Metal, the closet Christian equivalents would be Guardian (a little like Skid Row) or Barren Cross (similiar to iron Maiden at times) though as far as I know both these bands are now defunkt.
Short of downloading music (which I strongly advise against as you tend to pick all sorts of nasty viruses that wreck your computer) you can try listening to short (like 30 sec) samples on Amazon. They tend to have almost every C.D ever produced.
Anyhow, thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately my tastes are within are very confined niche.
 
In the late 80's and early 90's there were lots of really good Christian Metal bands around. Many of them were much better than their secular counterparts.

These days, I can't seem to find anything new and heavy that is any good.

I agree totally. That's the reason why in the last few years i've been listening mainly to secular stuff which i would never have listened to 5 years ago. I just worry a bit sometimes that some of the stuff I listen to is perhaps not having a good affect on my spiritual life. Though today I was listening to Rob Halford (Crucible), took it off and listened to some praise music instead. I found a lot of the oppression that was hanging over me took off.
 
Actually, I can't stand bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, POD etc. They all have the same commercialized grunge sound (perhaps i'm showing my age here as well - 40!). 2 (secular) bands I really have a high regard for are Kamelot and Gamma Ray. I've gone over the lyrics of Gamma Ray and have concluded that they must have Christian members in there but are far from what you'd call a ministry band but then most so-called Christian Metal bands around today offer little in the way of Spiritual edification. For musical excellence you can't go past Kamelot who hail from Florida - sadly they're non-Christian. What i'm after are some Christain bands that are in that same Euro-power Metal genre. The only ones I know of are Barren Cross, Holy Soldier and Guardian who are all a bit dated now and no longer recording.
 
Yeah, they remind me of Yngwie Malmsteen. They're OK but a bit boring though I've only heard the album "Awakening". I've been doing some research (thanks to Cubedbee for refering me to metalforjesus) and come up with some Christian Power metal. The best seems to be a band called "Seventh Avenue" who are meant to be like Gamma Ray (and also from Germany). Another is Dragma. Problem is getting to listen to their stuff is difficult unless I buy it. Just posting a CD to OZ costs around US$5, more from Europe.
 
I have a review for BloodGood on Amazon. It was cheaper at the time that I wrote my review so I would look around before buying that.

One of the members of Korn has quit the band to persue Christ so it will be intresting to see if he forms a Christian band or some lame contempoary deal. Nothing against contempory other then it is BORING and there is already enough of it.

Sound is off on my computer so it will be a while before I can check out what anyone here recommends.

A couple of Colorado bands one of which is Christian and plays churches as well as bars is http://www.benparkdrive.com and http://www.youcallthat-art.com haven't played any churches that I know but they don't seem to heathen. One of the reasons the drummer quit was the lifestyle of being in a band was to demanding. YCTA? did thank the Vinyard Church on their first CD.
 
I was just listening to a band today called "East West".

I would consider many of their songs to be metal. I really liked them. Give them a listen and let me know what you think.
 
I was in a christian metal band called standing on stone awhile bak.. heh we rocked i dropped out about 2 months ago because im moving up to live near my gf but i plan on starting another one up there. If theres any musicians up there that dream of being in a metal christian band, dont let the croud fool you. Society really looks down apon christian metal mostly because the people who listen to metal arent christian. No matter what, dont let anyone insult anyone for listening or being in a christian metal band. :)
 
Check out Skindred their style is actually reggae/rock so there is some softer songs but one song called "bruises" you would probably like.
 
I'm not 100% sure what *sound* would fall under heavy metal... sometimes I confuse the "rock" sound with that Megadeath sound :tongue

But have you ever listened to Petra? They're pretty heavy and metallic (if that makes sense :tongue ). They're pretty "80's long-haired band" though, you've been forewarned! :-D But they do some really kick-back rockin' guitar work!

If you want to sample some of their stuff (assuming you haven't before) I can send you a sample.

I love their "Creed" specially. :)

I listen to a lot of secular music, as well, though. I don't see the shame in it -- if it doesn't distort what the truth is of the given matter.

I was not very picky with my music a couple years ago, but just in the last 2 years I've noticed over and over that certain songs fed negative habits of thought and attitude. It'd get to where I'd stop singing along in the middle of a song and realize "wait a minute, he did what? that's not romance he's expressing, that's selfishness and veiled lust. How could I be singing along with this song for YEARS and feeling with this song, empathizing something I've never truly experienced, when it's totally fake and not what I believe to be true romance at all??" But it was so easy to give into the mellow music and the cliche phrases and sigh and think "Awww, how sweet!".

You inhale music "vibrations" which carry tag-along emotions into the smallest cells of your being; retained in memory, processes of the brain and in fat cells.. just the same as you do chemical compounds when using drugs. It truly can turn into an addictive vice.

I've learned to ask myself while listening to the lyrics and the tone of a song, "Is this realistic? Is this MY reality?". (Even with Christian music)

If their music is not reaching the best part of you, I'd let it go.

You don't need music. Since it's purely a want and one that is often deeply pleasurable, you have to be careful with it. Even when it is a pure/healthy pleasure, it too can be 'corrupted', and/or 'deceived' and unhealthily habitual - thus empty.

Haven't heard it my self but one E-friend says Stryper's new one is their best.

I perfer Blood Good but may check out the new Stryper.
