opinions please :) what do u guys think of a committed christian occasionally having ONE beer, which produces @ most a general feeling of relaxation, & as a beer connaisseur (sp?), enjoying the flavors & "notes" of it? does this fall under let no man judge u in food or drink so long as u do not do it in the presence of a "weaker" (not intended as a insult) brother? does it fall under go w/ however the Holy Spirit convicts u? what do u think?

thx!!!

Faith! we missed your presence on this board :biggrin What a pleasant surprise!

As for me, I don't see this as some dastardly sin, but I would defer to the Holy Spirit.

hey lords!!! great to be back & so glad to hear from u!! i've been wanting to continue our dialogue on pastoral counseling as well as get to know u :) i think (and jason insists lol) that we are very much alike. also if im not mistaken, u may live somewhat near to me as i am just outside the wash dc suburbs in a semi-rural location. so if we really become good friends, we may even decide to meet someday!!

ty for ur response. that is the direction i'm leaning on this topic as well. however, in the 1st year i got saved, i felt thoroughly convicted by HS that even a sip of alcohol was wrong. at that time tho, i was very legalistic due to my performance driven thinking & acceptance/approval issues stemming from my relationship w/ my earthly father. now, examining the scriptures, it would appear this may NOT be sin as paul says do not be DRUNK w/ wine wherein is dissipation, rather than not drink it AT ALL, in addition to the scripture in Romans i alluded to in the OP.

i def need to pray over this. i feel i am not as in touch w/ HS's voice as i was a few months ago b4 i took a job (& have since left) where my sched only allowed for me to go to church like once a month.

My problem with beer is that one tastes like another ( it has a moreish taste ) and soon enough im blotto , so i avoid that first one

DARK Beer -

what do u guys think of a committed christian occasionally having ONE beer,

Romans 14 rules - if YOU can have a Beer in the faith that it's NOT a spiritual issue (any more that eating Limburger Cheese - yum), then it's not sinful FOR YOU.

If you can't (and have to ask the question) then it's probably NOT something YOU can do in faith, and YOU SHOULDN'T do it.

Simple as that.

Personally I LOVE real DARK German Beer (like Andechs Dopplebock best served at 42 degrees - cellar temperature) or Weiss beer (served COLD with lemon).

I have no issue or tendency toward habitual abuse of alcoholic products, and so it DOES become a "testimony issue" only - so my alcoholic consumption is "covert" for the most part. If I'm out with Christian Fundys, I'll order ice tea.

I personally am not a fan of drinking my carbs, plus I don't enjoy the feeling of alcohol. So I plan on avoiding it.

Being a pentecostal Christian you might expect me to advocate against alcohol, but I honestly don't think it is bad in moderation.

If I drank beer and Jesus came over I'd be sure to offer Him one.

I forget who, but one of the ladies on here uses that a measuring stick and it seems to be a pretty good way of gauging what's alright to do.

That would be l'Chante! I have also adopted her wisdom and apply that to my life!

How can anyone drink BEER? :sad

Haha, a beer joke!

It's great to hear from you again! God willing we can do all that you mentioned.

Also, if you feel out of touch with the Holy Spirit I would recommend holding off on making this decision until you feel "restored" in Him :yes (Simply my :twocents

thx bob & matt :) i LOVE many diff types of ales & extra stouts, & will *occasionally* drink a really good lager, but ne'r shall a pilsner pass betwixt my lips lol.

generally i drink one beer about 3x a week. often i don't even get thru the whole beer. i'm a sipper, as are fans of wine (i also love a nicely balanced merlot & had a similar frequency of drinking it as i do w/ beer now, but its just too dang expensive!!). the only time i've been vulnerable to overdoing it is if i'm super happy or excited about something & just happen to crack one, or when i have one w/ my godson (he's 22), who is in a pre-christian state & is so introverted & so reclusive & so desperately hurting inside that the only time he opens up for deep, meaningful dialogue on this is when he's got a "buzz." its been extremely productive in the sense that he has shared his innermost fears, hatred, darkness & pain w/ me & w/ my non formally trained but strong & well developed gift for Word based counseling, i've been able to make great inroads towards his healing & towards eliminating his extreme aversion to christianity due to only having the heard fire & brimstone "gospel." he's HIGHLY intellectual & has a kind of cognitive depth perception that i've never come across b4. he's a BRILLILANT fiction writer & an encyclopedia of knowledge. extremely mature for anyone of any age. when he debated me on interpretations of the original languages of the bible, i showed him my strong's concordance & expl'd that every word in the greek & hebrew was assigned a # by learned scholars & that there is an index where u can look @ the many connotations of any given word, then examine a verse inserting the various connotations in order to get a much deeper & wider understanding of the text. he was extremely impressed w/ this & it was a major breakthrough in terms of him truly beginning to respect christianity & the Bible. i've not done that w/ him for a while b/c i myself have drank too much while doing so. but i must say that in THAT context, working w/ him where HE IS, alcohol was IMO of great benefit (his consumption, not mine). but again, i avoid it now as i have tended to overindulge as well & i def don't want to do that.

Faith, your story reminds me of the beer story in Brother Andrew's book "God's Smuggler" are you familiar with it?

no, i'm not familiar w/ it, but i'd like to be. who is brother andrew? i have to go to bed soon as i'm currently acclimating myself to an early shift from a late shift (& feelin it lol) but i will def look up the book & would love to hear more about it :)

Didn't Christ once turn water into wine during a wedding at his mothers request? I dont think we are talking about grape juice...

What about Noah..he was the one righteous man that the Lord singled out to be saved from the flood....Noah was a farmer who then planted a vineyard and he drank of his wine....

Beer? no different ( intoxicating/fermented )

I like beer and have no guilt or see it as a sin to drink it. I just give thanks to the Lord for it when I do decide to pop a top.

However, I do feel that over indulgence of alcohol weakens the spirit and allows opportunities for Satan to have his fun....Alcohol is called "spirits" for a reason:yes

I personally don't drink a sip of alcohol anymore because I feel the Holy Spirit has told me not to.

I used to drink too much before I turned to Jesus and drinking around here is a big problem for a lot of people....so I feel like I am called to be an example to others by not drinking.

I have no problem with other Christians having a drink now and then.....if the Holy Spirit tells them it is ok, then I am ok with it.

Eating isn't a sin. Gluttony is.
Money isn't evil. The Love of it is.

I don't believe the Bible ever says drinking alcohol is sinful, but it does say:

Prov 20:1 "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise."

1 Cor 6 "9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards
nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."

Isaiah 5:11 "Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine."

On the other hand:

Psalm 104:5 "wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart."

I believe drunkenness is a sin. I don't believe drinking alcohol in moderation is a sin, unless someone is personally led to stop, and he does not. If he refuses to let go if it, it has come to have control over him.

How can anyone drink BEER? :sad

What are you supposed to hold in your other hand when your flipping burgers on the grill? Get a hold of yourself, man!!
