Bible 101 lesson 6C

Gen 33 Jacob and Esau meet and everything is copasetic. They hug each other’s necks and there’s much boo-hooing and kissing and everybody is very happy. There is peace in the family and Jacob buys a piece of land and settles down.

Kinda

Genesis 34 Trouble in Canaan

Gen 34:1-2 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.

This is a lesson about the people with whom you let your kids hang out. Bad stuff can happen to good kids.

Gen 34:3-4 However, Shechem was in love (or something like it) with Dinah and he asked his father to arrange a marriage with her.

Gen 34:5-6 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came. Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.

Jacob didn’t throw a fit when he heard what happened; he held his peace to see what kind of plan he could make.

Gen 34:7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.

The boys, on the other hand, are really angry. But they don’t do anything right away. They were cagey like their father and they let Hamor talk as he tried to make peace with them. They just listened as if they weren’t upset and were open to hear what he had to say.

Gen 34:8 -11 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves. So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”

Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”

And that request to name a dowry gave Jacob’s boys the opening they were looking for.

Gen 34:13-17 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us. But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised, then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”

This was deceitful because they were not even considering giving their sister to an idol worshiping outsider and they also had no intention of taking Canaanite women as their wives who would lead them into idolatry and that would result in them losing the blessing of God.

They also knew how difficult it was going to be for all the men after they were circumcised and were waiting for the wounds to heal. (I can imagine them all sitting there trying to keep a straight face and not burst out laughing.)

So Shechem and his father agreed and went back to their village to sell the proposition to the rest of the people.

Gen 34:18-24 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.

And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying: “These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters. Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.

“Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.” And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

So the way that Hamor sells the idea to the people of his city is to tell them that the wealthy Hebrew’s livestock and property and cattle will be theirs for the taking. And the men of the city think that’s a great bargain.

Then Jacob’s boys took their revenge.

Just so you know Jim, I'm having a hard time following all this including the D lesson, could you basically sum it all up for me? Oh yeah and you accidentally posted lesson C twice.

Sounds like this is setting up for war
imo the key points of this lesson are:

1. Israel used gifts and words to appease the anger of his brother Esau and make peace with him

2. but then the situation with a different group of people living in the land is about to start a war because the brothers were inconsolably upset with how their sister Dinah was treated by Shechem - so the brothers hatched a plan - they asked the heathen city people to circumcise all their adult males - how badly this ends will probably be in the next lesson

the ongoing theme of lesson 6 posts seems to include
1.
the reasons people feel they need to use deception with others -
2. the bad consequences of using deception -
3. the great lengths people need to go to to appease people they have deceived or wronged
