Bible 101 lesson 8B

Pharaoh had a bad dream that disturbed him greatly and this is exactly why God had given Joseph the gift of interpretation of dreams. It is also God who gave Pharaoh the dream.

I wonder why God waited two years while Joseph was
stuck in Pharaoh’s prison and time kept dragging on…. (A little Johnny Cash?)

Gen 41:8 Now it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.

None of the Egyptian magicians (wise men, seers) could interpret the dream. Then the butler remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh that there might be someone who can interpret the dream for him.

Gen 41:9-12 Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: “I remember my faults this day. When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker, we each had a dream in one night, he and I. Each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream. Now there was a young Hebrew man with us there, a servant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and he interpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to his own dream.

So Pharaoh sent for Joseph and joseph interpreted his dreams but he made it clear that it was God who gave the interpretation. Maybe Joseph spent the additional the two years in prison in order to learn humility after having been his father’s favorite and lording it over his brothers.

Humility is a characteristic of Christ who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. (Phl 2:6-8)

And Who said: “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Mat 18:3-4)

Further, scripture tells us to; “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (Jas 4:10) And that’s what happened to Joseph after he had been properly humbled.

Pharaoh’s dream was God telling him of seven years of plenty coming that would be followed by seven years of famine.

Having gotten his attention, Joseph got bold and proceeded to tell the Pharaoh what he needed to do and how to do it. Pharaoh, being duly impressed, promptly appointed Joseph to handle the project. He not only appointed Joseph to head up the project but put him in charge of the entire kingdom being second in authority only to Pharaoh.
This relationship suggests that of Christ being submitted only to the Father.

Gen 41:46 Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

And the priests (sons of Aaron) began their service in the tabernacle at age thirty. (Num 4:34-5)
And David was thirty years old when he began to reign over all of Israel. (2 kings 5:4)
And Jesus was thirty years old when he began His ministry. (Luke 3:23)

God has a time for everything, according to Solomon. I believe God wanted Joseph to carry His will for the prisoners because Joseph was a man of God, that preached interpretation of dreams. God gave Joseph the ability and then put Joseph is hard situations so that Josephs gift of dream interpretation would work in Gods favor and bring people closer to God.
