Officials at Denair Middle School near Sacramento, California, ordered 13-year-old Cody Alicea to remove an American flag from his bike after receiving complaints from other students.

The youngster has flown the flag from his bike for two months in honor of veterans like his grandfather, but officials said the display could cause "racial tensions".

Superintendent Edward Parraz agreed that Cody does have a First Amendment right to display the flag, but noted the display comes with a responsibility, which apparently means hiding his patriotism for his own country.

According to an article at The Blaze, Parraz said

“Our Hispanic, you know, kids will, you know, bring their Mexican flags and they’ll display it, and then of course the kids would do the American flag situation, and it does cause kind of a racial tension which we don’t really want,†Parraz said. “We want them to appreciate the cultures.â€

Apparently, that appreciation means hiding his own feelings of pride and patriotism.

But Cody sees it differently.

“In this country we’re supposed to be free,†he said. “And I should be able to wave my flag wherever I want to. And they‘re telling me I can’t.â€

Attempts to contact the school were unsuccessful, and the school website was down at the time of this writing.

Now, thanks to political correctness, the student hides his flag during the day and keeps it hidden in his backpack.

In the meantime, Hispanic students display the Mexican flag on Cinco de Mayo, and the school flies the American flag in front of its building, but young Cody must hide his flag because some see it as racist.

Not sure anyone should blame the hispanics, they didn't create this rule or enforced it. Blame the officials ... wonder who complained though ... still in the name of peace ...

The only reason the sheeple think it's racist is because they are told by the power mongers that it is racist. In reality this IS America and NOT Mexico. Wow.. the dumbness out there is absolutely mind numbing!!!!!!

Good thought ... racial incitement anyone? lol ...

It's not the first time!

Here's a story from May 2010 involving high school students in CA. This seems to be racially motivated though (to an extent, one of the students is half-hispanic)

Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees

Freedom of expression or cultural disrespect on Cinco de Mayo?
By GEORGE KIRIYAMA
Updated 2:50 PM PST, Thu, May 6, 2010

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.
Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.
"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."
The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.

"They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended," Dominic Maciel, Galli's friend, said.
The boys really had no choice, and went home to avoid suspension. They say they're angry they were not allowed to express their American pride. Their parents are just as upset, calling what happened to their children, "total nonsense."
"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Julie Fagerstrom, Maciel's mom, said. "All they were doing was displaying their patriotic nature. They're expressing their individuality."
But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.
"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."
As for an apology, the boys and their families say, 'fat chance.'
"I'm not going to apologize. I did nothing wrong," Galli said. "I went along with my normal day. I might have worn an American flag, but I'm an American and I'm proud to be an American."
The five boys and their families met with a Morgan Hill Unified School District official Wednesday night. The district and the school do not see eye-to-eye on the incident and released the following statement:
The district does not concur with the Live Oak High School administration's interpretation of either board or district policy related to these actions.
The boys will not be suspended and were allowed to return to school Thursday. We spotted one of them when he got to campus -- and, yes, he was sporting an American flag T-shirt.

No way any superintendent of schools would create such a grammar mistake monstrosity of poor writing.

CL, some of the most illiterate writings I've heard of lately here in NJ have come from those who work in the education system. ... and to THINK they are teaching (and indoctrinating) our children! :shocked!

It's a crying shame, as is this incident with the US flag. We are gift wrapping this nation with a fancy bow and handing it right to the Adversary.:grumpy

:o Wow, I graduated from Denair High School way back when and have many friends who still live in town and whose kids go there.

I gotta get on Facebook and get the low-down on this one!

Meanwhile, I can guarantee that the writer of the article is not from anywhere near Denair, or else Denair never would have been reported as being "near Sacramento". Clear case of this particular writer being from way out of town. I'm always a bit suspicious of reportage of events by persons so far from where things took place. Somehow I doubt if the writer traveled all the way to pokey little Denair to get this story. Denair doesn't even have a motel, or even a decent fast food place.

But the ice cream at the Frostee Freeze was always good!

School Responds: Boy Forced to Remove Flag for His Own

Ed Parraz, the Superintendent of the Denair School District told us a school supervisor asked Cody to take down the flag. The supervisor will not be fired or face repercussions. Parraz says the supervisor had information that Cody’s safety was at risk because of the flag. Some students had complained about it and had apparently made threats.

Parraz says they have decided to focus on those students who are causing the problem, not the flag.

One thing that I've found out is that the school ordered all flags removed on Cinco de Mayo because of racial tensions. Apparently things were beginning to heat up on the High School campus back then...

The Turlock Journal reported that the boy was shouted at by some High School students but didn't understand what was being said because it was in Spanish.

So, it does bear out that the school acted more out of a concern for the boy's safety rather than just Political Correctness, especially since they now say he can display the flag.

The one thing is that the family states that the school did not contact them regarding any safety threats, nor did the school contact them to tell that their son could continue to fly the flag on his bike.

What is going on, this is America, and this is our flag. I grew up to respect this flag, well except when I was a hippie. But still this is America, we have the right to carry our flag where ever we go. My thing is why should this American born child have to go through this in his own country ? I have a problem with that. This is his country.

this will stir things up

liberals in college that teach multiculturalism.

you and i were taught that america is a melting pot and that the immigrants blended in. they didnt have to stop speaking thier toungues but had to learn and respect the american way and english was mandatory.

no we have 2 generational persons that wont learn english and hate america and love thier country and here on visas or wont ever be legal.

no not all immigrants are this way but the perception of that seems to be the case.

It had to have been a teacher who "complained" - how many 13 year olds do you know who scoff at seeing an American flag or who are even interested in this kind of debate and banter?

I agree. I also think since these kids are Americans even though they have a Mexican heritage, they need to be educated on their own country. To have citizens who are waving another countries flag just does not sound right. It`s like going to your school football game, sitting in the bleachers with your fellow schoolmates but pulling out a banner and waving it for the other team. But in this case it is even worse because the fellowschool mates are pulling out their own school`s banner to cheer their own team which is perfectly logical and expected but then the referee blows the whistle and tells them they can only wave a banner for the opposing team. How crazy is that!!!

Here is a good article from the Modesto Bee about this...

Denair Flag Flap: Student can fly colors again - Featured Stories - Modbee.com

The Modesto Bee is a pretty good local paper.

On a personal note: Sadly, my little hometown which had really good relationships between races back in my day (I graduated in '79) has become tense between the Mexicans and Whites. Word from my friends there is that this is not really due to race as much as it is gangs, and I know that it was because of gangs that my sisters moved away from town. However, the gangs are drawn on racial lines.

So, it is racist and it isn't racist. Non-gang people, no matter what race, still get along fairly well, but yep, the gangs have been bad around the central valley for quite some time.

Looks like my sisters and brothers-in-law made the right choice to move their families away back in the early '90's when they moved up here to Idaho. My folks decided to retire here, so I tagged along just to be with family.

Anyway, back to the story, the school official who asked that he remove the flag did it because of some things that were being said about it by some of the Mexican kids...not known whether or not they were gang members...and now the whole administration of the school is facing national outcries.

Superintendent Parraz said "It’s one of those things that the campus supervisor was thinking in the best interest of Cody and it backfired on her. I think it was the right decision with the wrong result. She feels miserable.â€

Ummm, right decision, wrong result? How about wrong decision, right result. The decision to tell young Cody to remove the flag, rather than deal with the comments by the High School kids was wrong. The outrage is what is actually right here.

Now THIS is my hometown!!!

I'm proud of my fellow Denarians and how they responded to this issue! Denair is a good town, and doesn't deserve the national spotlight on something as negative as a kid being told to put away our flag because of racism!
