It can be effective as a conversation-starter, both among professing Christians that do not yet know each other and also in an evangelistic way.

When I was a teenager, I had a lot of these "conversation starters". I had fish signs and crosses and various other things printed on T-shirts and plastered or drawn on my notebooks at school, but they never started any conversations. The only exception was my T-shirt that had "PBPGNFWMY" printed on it. People would ask me why I had half the alphabet on my T-shirt and I'd explain what it meant. Christians thought it was cool, but everyone else thought it was just weird and the conversation never went any further.

Some people do find that conversation-starters (shock! :) ) start conversations...

I suppose it's theoretically possible. That's probably why their called "conversation starters". They start conversations just like ice breakers break ice and wind breakers break wind. :)

PS:

... at church this past week.
People in general tend to think it's not a big deal either way.

There are some ppl who for some reason are so anti-fish sign that they think it is a big deal....

Of course, these anti-fish sign reasons vary enormously.

Blessings.

Don't use it as a conversation starter but I do have an embossed version of the fish on the back of my car. I've always wanted to know though, does it matter which way the fish is pointing?

Not sure; it's usually right to left, though...

Blessings.

Yes. Although, like mentioned above, some jewlery may not have the same impact as a fish. Wearing a cross on a necklace may not necessarily mean you are a Christian. I think it has become somewhat of a fashion statment for some poeple and those people may not even say they are a Christian if they were asked. But anyone wearing the fish may be more likely to be a Christian. I could be wrong though.

To be clear though: In no way am I saying that anyone wearing a cross on a necklace is not a Christian or is only doing it for fashion.

Corey: So have you seen the Christian fish sign lately?

I seem to keep seeing it on cars, anyway.

I thought fish on the back of the car means "beware, dangerous rude driver". Not as bad as the "baby on board", in other words, "listen up world, I might have a baby in the car, so I'm going to drive crazy and reckless, so everyone watch out, and I'll leave the sign on until my kids in elementary school".

While the fish head pope hat might symbolize the god Dagon, I think the fish is ok for Christians to symbolize Jesus's large catering events.

Well, I guess a simple sign <>< is far more straightforward anyway than all those combinations of letters that you mentioned.

Blessings.

I am hearing of this for the first time ( Sorry for being Naive).

They are very popular in the West, anyway. Whether in jewelry, or in a tattoo, or in a bumper sticker, etc. The word ICHTHUS, meaning fish in Greek, also spells in Greek that the Lord Jesus is the Son of God.

Blessings.

Sparrowhawke: It's maybe interesting to reflect, in the light of Reena Jain's comment, that the Christian fish sign <>< may these days carry more of a Western rather than Eastern context. (What do you think?)

Blessings.

Hi Reena and welcome!
Ehh, it's a cultural thing over here. The atheist have their own too.. It's Darwin eating the fish... Be thankful lol!

They also have one with the word Darwin in the fish and the fish has legs. That's not a religion though.
